Wow, look at the glass in that car dealership. Every time they put up a new building in Tokyo these days the ratio of glass just seems to get higher and higher. If it all ends up like the picture above I hope I am not walking past one of…

My father is close to 58 and still diving. Provided you're healthy it shouldn't be an issue- Cousteau was still diving at much older. It does seem that her buddy (her husband?) wasn't being quite as conscientious as he should have been though.

The "preliminary magnitude" is always reported right after an earthquake. I'm pretty convinced that there is such a thing.

That expression surprised me too. I actually think it's odd to say that a quake "broke out" as it implies that something started small and then spread. Happened, struck or occurred is the usual English. Fires and riots "break out".

This article looks like a hasty translation, which is no…

The maps I saw on the NHK broadcast clearly showed an X well off the coast. I think given the possibility of tsunamis, an hour long report was justified- when a 6.6 earthquake has occurred they can't exactly ignore it, even if there are no immediate reports of damage.

I seriously doubt all those seismographs around the country are wrong, it's just that there are so many factors affecting how much damage an earthquake will cause that Magnitude alone isn't a good indicator. Some bigger earthquakes cause less damage, and some smaller ones cause more.

Don't they mean that you have to save ¥50,000 to get to the conclusion of the story?

People who don't do anything to make the world a better place criticising someone who is at least trying- that's just messed up. And as for the slave labour thing- that's just ridiculous. She's not making a profit out of it and the workers are volunteers- how on earth is…

I agree with the above- your body and brain's instinct for survival will pretty much prevent you drowning yourself in shallow water- you have to be out of your depth. Once you try to inhale water your body spasms violently and you would have a hard time staying under water…

It would be quite easy to pass out in a hot spring, but quite difficult to drown yourself in one I would think.
