I'd say they are arriving back in Japan to hear the verdict after having gone back to the UK, not leaving.

Sure people want to find out for themselves rather than for the sake of the newborn, and most in this country and in the cultures most people commenting here come from have no intention of aborting if it's not one or the other.
We don't have a nursery as the baby sleeps in our room, but we wanted to know for various reasons- so we had an answer for the people who constantly asked "do you know if it's a boy or a girl?", so we could focus on one sex while trying to narrow down the name selection, and also just out of curiosity- what's wrong with that? I wasn't hoping for one or the other, but finding out which one you will have is part of the fun, and now we can do it early, why not?

While this might sound callous, the Narita Express (airport-bound ones anyway) is the worst train to jump in front of as far as ruining other people's days- I wonder how many people missed their flights because of this? I doubt she was thinking along those lines though.

As someone who regularly looks at pregnancy and baby forums, I totally disagree- I would say 80-90% of people want to know, it's unusual these days not to find out. Some people after finding out then decide to keep it as a surprise for the other people they know- not really sure why people do that, I agree on that part.

I'm just astounded that anyone would actually say this. I would have thought it was the most basic common sense that whether you are driving or cycling you need to be watching where you are going and paying attention to what is happening around you, and you just can't do that if you are texting. I don't know how many times I've had to dodge someone who thinks they can ride a bike safely while texting.

I can understand people not necessarily wanting the windows open in normal circumstances- sometimes it causes a howling gale through the carriage which is more unpleasant that being a little warm in my opinion. Also the air coming in from subway tunnels is not something I particularly want to breathe, and it's really noisy in a subway with the windows open. Not so bad in aboveground trains.

People are misunderstanding "cut back". On any train I have been on recently, there is still aircon, it's just not as strong as it would normally be (which I also think is a good thing). Basically as someone said above all the cars have been turned into jakureibousha. I also often see the windows open- most carriages still seem to have a few windows open. No need to panic.

The article originally said Miyu's mother was 79 when she passed away, which would have put her in her mid-fifties when Miyu was born, hence the comments about the mother's age. It has since been corrected but the moderator didn't add a note.

I was a bit sceptical so I checked and Wikipedia says that her mother was 43 when she was born, which makes more sense- the age given in the article must be a mistake.

as electric2004 said, that means she was born when her mother was 55- she must have been quite a surprise for them. I don't think I've heard of anyone having a baby naturally at that age before, the oldest mother I know was 48 when her daughter was born.

I seem to remember something similar happening last time Hillary met Empress Michiko- she apparently has a lot of respect for the Empress and they get on well- I doubt the Empress was surprised or offended at all.

Huh? Do you mean since the 3/11 quake? The Japanese media have been speculating about the next big Tokyo quake for decades, the concept is nothing new here, hence no need for the Japanese media to focus on it now. Everyone in Tokyo knows (or should know) we are overdue for a big earthquake here.

No such luck- early on in the piece he announced that the tsunami was a punishment from god on the Japanese people and then was asked to publicly apologise by the governor of Miyagi prefecture- Ishihara can never resist an opportunity to put his foot in it.

Disillusioned, I have to admit I was thinking something similar, but not wanting to speak ill of the dead I was just trying to put it nicely.

While it's very sad that the guy was basically a victim of the power cuts (like the people who have been killed at crossings while the lights were out), you don't really have to be an expert to know that you don't run diesel or petrol-powered engines in enclosed spaces. A pity we are having to worry about any of this at all though.

As cleo says, breadmaking machines have been popular for a while and lots of people have them- ours was really handy while you couldn't get bread because we already had some flour. Now for some reason it's harder to get flour than bread- go figure.
