To wajisin, please keep giving up your seat on trains to pregnant women, as someone who is 8.5 months pregnant I can tell you it is very much appreciated, even if it's only you and a few other kind people doing it.

The jingle at the end of the AC ads seems to have been gone for several days now- priorities and all I know, but I think it was driving most people nuts. They also do more of a mix now rather than repeating the same ad several times over and include quake-related messages- worrying about it beyond that is probably going a bit overboard right now though.

Forgot to make the first part of my post a quote- I am replying to SpanishEyez above, not asking the same question.

My question is: what am I going dealing with in terms of living conditions in Tokyo? Should I worry about not being able to find certain things? And should I just bring stuff from home?

The only thing I really haven't been able to get hold of in the last 2 weeks is natto, fermented soybeans, and I doubt you will miss those much unless you've already developed a taste for them. Milk is a bit hit and miss, so you could bring some powdered milk if you were really worried, although you won't have any problems getting a latte at Starbucks. We are advised to give bottled water to babies under 1 year old for the time being but that the water is safe for adults (by overseas experts as well as Japanese sources).

Otherwise it's just that the escalators are off sometimes and the lighting levels are lower than normal, minor concerns really. There is the possibility of power cuts but we haven't had one yet.

There are plenty of established channels to donate money through if you want to collect donations that can go through now. Random people standing outside stations aren't likely to have the connections to get the aid donated efficiently, so to me it seems reasonable to discourage it if they give information on alternative ways to help.

Realist, I live even further out than Zenny- well-heeled inner city Tokyo it is not. You live somewhere so remote you can't take a train anywhere to find milk or bread? Not one store in your area has any of those items at any time of day? That's very unlucky, but I don't think it's the norm here. In any case, wouldn't you say you are better off than people up north? My husband's relatives are in inland Miyagi, and they had no power at all until yesterday.

To reply to the first 3 posters above, as JKanda says, there are no food shortages in Tokyo. Earlier in the week panic buying meant it was hard to get milk, bread, rice, cup noodles and a few other things, but there was plenty of other food.

Light usage has been toned down everywhere- people are not stupid here, unnecessary lights were turned off as soon as the power cuts were announced, including neon advertising in Shinjuku and Shibuya, and lighting in pachinko parlours, drugstores and convenience stores all over the city.

As for hospitals, the one where I will be giving birth soon told me yesterday they have emergency generators. It is not crowded with patients from other prefectures.

As for the power cuts themselves, we have yet to have even one in the area I live in (west Tokyo- they keep announcing and then cancelling them), and in areas that have had them they haven't lasted more than 3 hours.

If you are not in Tokyo and don't really know what's going on, please stop spreading incorrect information about the situation here. Worry about the people up in Tohoku, who really are suffering.

What do they do to you if you have any on you?

Maybe the same as the guys on the US Navy ships off Fukushima had to do to remove radiation a few days back- wash with soap and water.

"While at times we have had only limited access to information" That say it all. The US had no idea what was going on while the German, the French and the Australian immediatly understood the severity of the situation.

You think that the French, Germans and Australians have access to info that the Americans don't? I sincerely doubt that.

I think with perishable goods it's as much a case of the usual deliveries not being made to supermarkets and conbinis as panic buying. With companies reducing business hours, asking staff to stay home and various transport issues, the distribution networks have to have been affected, and that's what the signs at our local supermarket suggested.

for canned foods local super has a sale and staff sez they can't move them.

Canned foods were completely sold out when we went to the supermarket yesterday. Beer however there was plenty of...

We bought a breadmaker a few weeks back- that's turning out to be a good investment since we couldn't buy any at the supermarket yesterday. Good as long as the flour supply holds out I suppose...

Zed at the theatre next to Disneyland is also awesome- I agree with the above, it's not just the acrobatics, the costumes, music and sets make Cirque de Soleil an amazing experience. Definitely get to at least one of them if you can.

Checked- Depp is about 175cm (5'9"), and the director is 205cm (6'8").

With a name as impressive as the director's, you would want to be at least 6'3" in order to carry it off. Luckily it looks like he's probably even taller.

The sentence is not suspended in this case, I believe, it's custodial. In which case recently has a parent been given a suspended sentence for killing a child?

Whoa, that Hanbok costume is REALLY unflattering. I hope that she is not nearly as fat as she looks. Awful, just awful!

Way to insult a country's national dress- make sure you don't say that to any Koreans you meet in the future. I think it is pretty, myself. And Michelle is very slim, but the hanbok is meant to de-emphasise a woman's figure.

Just out of interest, I checked their heights.

Michelle Wie: 185cm Paula Creamer: 175cm Ai Miyazato: 157cm

Height obviously doesn't have much bearing on golf skill in Ai's case, but unfortunately this picture does make her look pretty stubby.

9 Japanese students (from Toyama apparently) and a teacher have been accounted for, 12 still missing. Several of the rescued students have been taken to hospital.

    But that's gotta hurt...

It wouldn't hurt at all. You only have to be moderately flexible to lift that high- she wouldn't be anywhere near her limit.
