Smokers always seem to trot out the argument "you're not going to get cancer from a bit of secondhand smoke". I'm not concerned about getting cancer from secondhand smoke. I object to it because it stinks, it hurts my throat, and if I'm around it long enough, I start to get a headache. The more smoking bans the better, in my opinion.

As for the assertion that "most Japanese people smoke": wrong. The most recent statistics I have seen put it at something like 45% of men and 25% of women. That is not "most people" by anyone's definition.

Agreed. I only go because it's the nearest beach, but "nice" isn't a word that comes to my mind to describe it really. The beaches on Ishigaki island are nice, Enoshima beach is not.

I was at Enoshima on Sunday and pretty much every weekend this summer. Yes, it's common to be able to see Mt. Fuji there, but only at sunset when it's backlit. Otherwise you would have no idea it was there in summer. The waves during the day were actually a decent size this weekend just gone and the surfers were getting some good rides (I bodyboard). You constantly have to be avoiding other people catching the same wave or bearing down on you though so it's not the most fun place to surf.

Most damage caused by an earthquake in NZ in almost 80 years apparently. It's a miracle no-one was killed. Hope everybody there is ok and that things will be back to normal for them soon.

I can't believe there are people here who actually have to ask if Ali Larter is pregnant. Some of you people don't get out much, do you? Yes, she is very obviously pregnant, probably 7 months or so.

She was at home by herself at 8 years old? Would that be illegal here? It is where I come from. Horrible that bullying starts so early.

Attractive Artwork, but what about rice? for industrial use?

They do this by using different varieties of rice which naturally grows in the different colours seen here- they didn't paint it, it's perfectly edible.

I like the yaki-imo truck recordings, and I've only ever heard them in the afternoon or evening in winter- the writer can't have heard one in the last few months, nobody buys them at this time of year. I'm guessing he's in a tiny minority of people who don't like the chant from those trucks, most people find it quite atmospheric.

Looks sunny to me in the picture, hence the parasols. Last summer the fish came from Churami aquarium in Okinawa- was quite impressive. Must have a look and see if the fish are from Churami this year too.

Imagine your own mother at that age,

Since my own mother is about that age, I can imagine it. She would be offended if someone stood up for her because she thinks that people her age are not "elderly", quite rightly too. My father is also a similar age, and still skiing black diamond and off piste runs. He also doesn't need anyone to give up their seat for him. A disabled person of any age or a genuine "elderly person", which does not mean 66, should be able to sit down. If that woman has the strength to injure that boy she was also capable of standing on that bus, so she should be charged with assault and punished accordingly.

I agree that you don't "play" the vuvuzela, but I doubt it will be banned because it's far too ingrained a thing with South African soccer fans.

I don't really see what being a single mother has to do with it. My mother was a single mother to three children and yet managed not to stab any of us.

The article starts weirdly- "stepping off the platform at Harajuku station" does not put you straight onto the street (or at any other station in Tokyo for that matter). Try "shuffling up/down the stairs, along the walkway, and fighting my way though the crowds of people who are trying to get into the station while I am trying to get out". Every time I go there I wonder why they don't do something about that station- it's a crushing accident waiting to happen.

While it's not a nice thing to see someone yelling at their partner in public, I can't really understand why Ms. Feineman felt the need to turn this into an article. I have seen Japanese guys hit their girlfriends/wives in public, which I don't think is really acceptable in Japanese society either, but they grew up here, so don't have the slightest excuse.

If you read the comments at all, what was the point of this article, Ms. Feineman?

Japan's crime records are all time high, most of them committed by women against kids(leaving kids inside car for pachinko, random stabbings etc.)

Seriously, RedUS?? You really think that "most" crime in Japan is committed by women against children?

Common sense should tell you that is not true. Remember that what you hear in the news does not reflect everything that is happening- they only print the more shocking, unusual crimes. Think a bit before posting, please.

Yet again JT misuses the word "elderly". 65 is only just the age of retirement in many countries, it's still quite a few years off elderly. I don't get why this site so often has to tack it on to mentions of people over about 55.

I've never understood the attraction of Tsukiji either. I dislike the smell of raw seafood so much that I go out of my way to avoid the seafood section in supermarkets, so you won 't ever find me near Tsukiji. My stepbrother is currently planning a trip to Japan and mentioned that Tsukiji was the #1 thing he wants to see in Tokyo- I really don't get it.

Did they eat them, I wonder? I would think twice about eating shellfish from there, it's right on Tokyo Bay.
