He was backgrounding journos off the record and he basically said something aloing the lines of "we're going to screw Okinawa on the bases issue." Careless wording, perhaps, but arguably the journos should not have attributed an off the record briefing. His comments tend to indicate that he knows only too well that Okinawa is going to get a rough deal.

I wonder if sellers will be able to mix the contaminated rice with low contamination rice in order to reach the safey standard. Getting it down from 630 becquerels to 500 becquerels would not seem too difficult.

It's not only schools. It's not only parents. It's basically that a central feature of Japanese culture is to strengthen the group dynamic. That's why club activities are a key feature of the Japanese educational system. A unique people, speaking a unique language. Strength in what is common to the group. Ostracizing what is not common to the group as a way of forcing it to conform. The government encourages this. Parents encourage this. Schools encourage this. And groups of kids at school encourage this. The answer is not so easy. The idea of strength in diversity and advantages from plurality could be given greater currency in the education system. Alternatively, the idea of inclusion of aberrants in group activities as a means of strengthening the group might be a successful Japanese type of approach.

This is one of the biggest lies put forward by farm groups. By allowing competitive imports, Japanese farming will also improve its competivity, and will even be able to export more of its products. Japan's comparative advantage will be in producing quality products, which will gradually occupy more and more of the food market in the industrializing Asian contries. The only issue is how to manage the transition, which will hurt vested interests in the short and medium term. A golden age of Japanese agricultural products lies ahead - just as happened with industrial products in the 20th century.

TokyoGas You've made an excellent suggestion. I feel the same way about "tarento" which is a purely Japanese word in the same way as "hiyaringu" (which means to take soundings) and "kure-mu" (which means to have objections to something). For "tarento" let's make it "media personality" from now on!!

This issue is basically about which country owns the disputed Senkaku Islands (Diaopyutai Islands). Worth a lot of money in terms of oil drilling rights and fishery rights. That's why the stakes are so high.

To have people living and working in a developed society but paid at developing country rates has fundamental flaws, and can be demoralizing for the workers. It's the accident of where you happened to be born. The phenomenon is not just seen in Japan - have a look at the staff working the cruise ships sailing out of Miami. Basically it is people from poor countries providing value to people from rich countries at a big discount, becasue of the where they happened to be born.
