Insufficient nursing staff in hospitals and care facilities can also mean that nurses work horrendous shifts. Changing adult diapers aside, I can only imagine how difficult it must be to have to deal with violent or otherwise troublesome patients on top of sleep deprivation. I'm sure even the saintliest of nurses have a tipping point. There's obviously a lot more to this story than meets the eye.

@cleo - No idea why you got all the thumbs down. I'm a firm believer that it is the responsibility of dog owners to train them to behave as best they can. If people haven't got the time or the inclination to do that, they shouldn't have a dog.

@Devil It's not so much the 'tradition' aspect (which would appear in this case to be limited to a very small area) as the fact that none of the posters are surprised that a big, captive bull got one over on its puny owner. Not quite a Darwin Award, but perhaps in the same league as a circus performer who puts his head in the jaws of a lion.

Sure, but the fact they are on death row should be a bit of a hint that the gallows are beckoning. And as @sensei258 points out, murder victims generally aren't expecting to have their lives taken from them.
As for rival gangsters, well, it could be argued that they buy into that kind of life style, but we can't be shooting people willy nilly in restaurants.

@hoserfella I don't doubt it. I imagine riding in the RR is somewhat less 'biscuit tin'-like than the Alto.

That's a mean chuck of metal. WIth all the bloody traffic lights in Japan, though, the driver of this Roller will be stop-starting at the same pace as all the Suzuki Alto drivers, while consuming gallons more high-oc.

As @borax and a couple of others pointed out, despite being decked out in body armour with 'forked spears', the police looked pretty hopeless. Don't they have tazers here? A quick zap to the gnads would've subdued the knife-yielding, girlfriend-threatening, amphetamine-fuelled, young car thief yankee.

Mental anguish?! It seems to me that this man should stop Googling himself.
Can we assume that Yafuu, which is certainly the preferred search engine among every Japanese person I've met, doesn't autocomplete in the same way?

After a mere 7 years doing the Tokyo commute, I'm still in the 'GET OUT OF MY WAY!' frame of mind. It gets me down, so I hope to develop Ichiro Tanaka's approach if I choose to do it for the long haul.

Very amusing article, and very true. Faux beer is best avoided and should be featured in guide books for newbies in Japan.

As some posters have pointed out, the whole reserving a piece of park if you're not even there is pretty cheeky. Get there early in the morning with a box of supplies and camp out until your friends arrive. That's the decent thing to do.

I'm with @Probie. Most of the time the 'otoshi' is something unpalatable, so I always refuse it. No waiter has ever told me I have to have it.
@Wakarimasen A few hundred yen isn't going to spoil my evening, but it's a waste of food and money if the takowasabi, or whatever is plonked in front of me, isn't eaten. The izakayas don't care if you then spend a few thousand yen on the rest of your evening.

Until the leadership stops acting beyond the laws of the land(s) and starts handing paedophile priests over to the real authorities for the punishment they deserve, no-one should take them seriously. And that's only the tip of the iceberg.

Geez. The Russian bedside manner must be pretty shoddy if they're looking to Japan for good patient care. Tough love all around.
