Cleo, you got me curious, so I looked it up in the Japanese and guess what, the word's been around in Japan for at least 45 years. Here is how Apache is defined in the 1965 edition of Tokyodo's Gairaigo-jiten:(米) Apaches + 族 アパッチー族(名)(勇猛なアメリカ士人の種族の名から比喩的に)古金属窃盗団。(現)Apache - tribe (noun) (used figuratively from the name of the fierce American warrior tribe) groups of robbers of used metal. The dictionary capitalizes it.

Almost all the SM and bondage in Japan involves play acting and no one gets hurt by it. I sense many if not all of these 'S' males get a thrill out of the notion of subduing a woman and would probably flee in panic if a woman took the initiative in a sexual relationship.

I've noticed a considerable increase in police and community watch patrols in the neighborhood. There are definitely more of those tatekanban signs wired to utility poles warning against purse snatchings, etc. Of course robberies and pilferage do tend to go up during recessions, so there's nothing surprising about it.

I do a lot of editing on galleys and the fax is still the most practical way to go.

Good question. My guess is it's probably a play on words from apaato, which are more common out in Tochigi than manshon.

A young American executive who I took around to several major clients had a serious problem with his English diction. This wizened old f**t took him aside and pointed it out to him, explaining why it was a problem and why it would be to his advantage to correct it. He stumbled a few times but by the end of the day he had rid himself an inappropriate colloquialism. I would like to think I did him a favour, but who knows?

Does this surprise you? It's obvious that from quite a few years ago web site operators began to rate the 'quality' of articles by counting the number of responses generated from irate readers.

Japanese brains seem to have a wonderful filter that enables them to disregard things I find annoying to the extreme, like ambulance sirens at 2:30 a.m., off-key karaoke and the smell of smouldering cigarette filters in public dustbins. If they could develop it for export, think of all the happy people there would be in the world.

The merit-based wage and promotion system went into effect at many companies, but there's still a lot of old-style factionalism among people who attended the same university, etc. and a worker without these sort of connections might be arbitrarily given a lower rating even though he's not necessarily a slacker.

If you boot them out, you are just exporting refugees who will create a problem for the next country that takes them in. If a person goes through the French naturalisation process and is accorded French citizenship, his subsequent criminal behaviour becomes France's problem, and it would be France's job to rehabilitate him or her.

Flags taken down can be hoisted again. I recall reading a piece by a Japanese survivor of Iwo Jima that after the Marines raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi the peak was unguarded and Japanese returned two more times and raise their own flag. There's something iconic about all of this, but it's a bit silly if you really think about it in 21st century terms, where massed troops waving their colours just make easier targets for drones or B52s.

I wonder what Al-Qaida members say when they recite their pledge of allegiance... ".. one nation, under Allah, with suicide bombs followed by 72 virgins for all.."?

Out of curiosity (or boredom) I tried it. The flavour was rather bland. But I didn't contract scurvy so it's hard to refute their claims.

Sarge, when was the last time you picked a head of lettuce, hosed down a kitchen floor or slaughtered a steer? How many other American citizens with whom you have a personal acquaintance perform such chores?

Aside from being a huge waste of money, tattoos are lowbrow narcissism pure and simple, and everybody over 40 I've ever met who had one told me they wish they 'hadn't been so stupid' when they were younger.

Street crime is not that serious problem in Japan. From the "24 Hours Police at Work" programmes they're always showing, it would seem security cameras in stores seem to be catching lots of shoplifters. Most of them are old ladies.
