I know it shouldn't bother me, but I'm often annoyed watching how rude Japanese are to each other. While it's easy to blame the younger generation, it's not confined to any particular age group. Probably something to do with the uchi-soto conundrum, where courtesies paid to a person outside of one's sphere of relationships are considered egregious.

Just what the world needs, another religious war, only this time over nukes. Or possibly, using nukes.

I'm beginning to believe that el Diablo has actually taken control of Mexico. These drug gangs are becoming the Khmer Rouge of Latin America.

I've noticed that Osaka people are far more creative in their public toilet graffiti. I haven't seen any good scrawls in Tokyo for ages.

Wait until China finishes building, and operating 100 nuclear power reactors it has on the planning boards. Radioactivity does a lot more damage than spilled oil.

But there are so many holes in this system (the cafes operated on a shoestring and most of them don't have the manpower to conduct diligent checks) that they are unlikely to keep reliable records of users in any case. Instead of demanding ID they could probably retain usable evidence just by recording the faces of everyone who comes in with a security camera.

The US should give Afghanistan back to the Taliban and regularly send drones to visit their leaders at unexpected times. It would be cheaper in the long run and would keep the insurgent population in check.

Of all the follies of the Bush administration, the greatest by far was starting a second war before the first (in Afghanistan) had been resolved. Since the US had ended conscription, it literally drove its volunteer armed forces into the ground. This goes against the principles of every military theorist from Sun Zi to Carl von Clausewitz, and will be remembered as the singular event that marked the turning point in the decline of U.S. as a superpower.

LOL, I remember a few years back when they held the national screaming contest and one of the finalists was a woman who bellowed, 'You crook! Bring back my stolen panties'!
If the perpetrator had opened one of those burusera boutiques in Shibuya he'd be rolling in money by now.

How did this social (not religious) custom get started? By men too psychologically insecure to let other men glance at their wives? I can't see how it has anything to do with religious beliefs at all, and certainly has no place in 21st century society. I'll go along with Kronos about banning other costumes as well. Practitioners of all religions, take note: if you take the trouble to examine the teachings of your creed, you'll almost certainly discover that they do not mandate going to such extremes.
Posted in: In some countries, there are moves to ban or restrict the wearing of religious clothing and symbols such as burqas, veils, head scarves, skullcaps, turbans and crucifixes in public places like schools, recreational facilities and so on. What’s your stance?
