No, let's not. I'm perfectly content to watch old black and white clips from the telly on YouTube, which were made at a time when actors could evoke emotional responses and directors didn't depend on faked explosions and obligatory car chase scenes in every production.

Hell, you can buy a perfectly good used digital camera for 4,725 yen. Probably get 6 or 7 megapixels for that price.

Maybe because the steel used for part of the Tokyo Tower was from tanks (U.S. Army tanks, damaged in the Korean War.) Swords into ploughshares?

Let Ms. Masuda be remembered as the Bernhard Goetz of Nagasaki. Or maybe we could call her Madame Iron Butterfly.

As is often the case of words with foreign derivation, haafu was coined because previous terms like ainoko and konketsuji carried too much negative baggage. That said, it puts a label on people and I prefer to avoid it for that reason.

Religion is supposed to be a belief system, not the Mardi Gras. People who think they are being devout because they dress up in peculiar garments don't really understand what it's all about.

The choice of language per se is only part of the issue. Self expression, achieving consensus and tenacity in the defence of one's position are closely tied to cultural attitudes. The results of meetings held in English and Japanese might be quite different and over the long run would be likely to set a company on a different course.

I hope sumo can continue, but I'd rather see it die a quick death than to watch it slowly erode, with one scandal after the next.

It makes a great deal of sense for Haneda to handle flights to Seoul, Taipei and Guam/Saipan since for many people in the western part of Tokyo the time to get to Narita airport takes longer than to fly to these nearby destinations.

How could the fate of a nation be decided by approximately 0.25 per cent of the electorate (this assuming a voter turnout of 50 per cent, which would be above the national average) who would be voting for a slate of all-Japanese candidates?

Indeed. But to be honest I don't see a great deal of erudite English from native speakers, who presumably received an equal amount of schooling in their own language.

@UdaMan -- shucks, I only use "cool" to mean "mildly cold".
I must concede your point this time: the Google translator will translate 酷 as "cool", but when translating from English into Chinese the process is not reversed. Typing "cool" gives you 涼 (liang) in Chinese.

It doesn't "mean" cool, it's pronounced ku (in the 4th tone) in Mandarin and used thusly for the phonetic similarity to the English "cool". The actual meaning is essentially the same as in Japanese.

We should not look at this merely as the case of a politician dismissing a commander in the field. Just as the Vietnam War had its turning point with the 'Walter Cronkite moment', it appears that the war in Afghanistan has now arrived at its 'Rolling Stone moment'. By this time a year from now, President Kharzai will be settled into his villa in exile (perhaps in the south of France or Switzerland), and the Taliban will once again be executing disobedient women with their AK47s in Kabul Stadium. Well, it was jolly good fun while it lasted.
