One of the many lessons the US failed to learn from the Vietnam war is that no military commander dares to tell his civilian bosses that the job they've been handed is hopeless and the country's best interests would be served by pulling out. Let's say for the sake of argument that McChrystal could get everything he wanted for a 'victory' in Afghanistan: 500,000 US troops on the ground, B52s, Agent Orange, the works. That would just create an even bigger quagmire, with a larger body count. What the US doesn't understand is that the days of neocolonialism are over, and that countries that are determined to resist with their people's wars can keep fighting for decades, knowing that American political will is eventually going to run out.

Referring to the VP as "bite me" is style???
You really think so? The waste heap of US political history is full of charismatic military leaders who thought they could prevail over civilian politicians. (Eisenhower being the lone exception in modern times.)

Even if I were to naturalise, it wouldn't be because I desired voting rights here -- the selection of corrupt buffoons on the local and national ballots is appalling.

Here's a prediction: He'll thrive at his new PR career until someone taunts him after he's had a few drinks. He'll knock a few skulls and find himself in a police station until he's paid for the damage to life and limb, and then be deported to the green, green steppes of home.

Yanks clearly take a great deal of pleasure and cathartic excitement from dramatic media coverage of the lead-up to a scheduled execution, be it hanging, gas, electric chair, lethal injection or even a (non-judicial) fatal tasering. Far be it from me to deprive them of their fun.

I keep a piggy bank here and feed in coins equivalent to the amount of money that would be otherwise wasted on purchase and use one of those odious things. It's amazing how much it comes to in the course of a few months. When the bank is full I treat myself to a fine meal or something I need for the house. Another satisfied non-owner!

Klein2, George Wallace was not assassinated. The attempt left him paralyzed from the waist down and in a wheelchair, but he lived another 26 years.

No need to punch anyone -- just make it a point to carry one of those toys that produce a loud squawk when you compress the rubber bulb. Hold it up to the offender's other ear and squeeze, repeatedly, until he or she rings off.

Years ago when I worked for a Japanese firm, office employees were asked to stand and observe a minute of 黙祷 (silent prayer) at the stroke of noon every August 15, while the Emperor presided over ceremonies at the Nippon Budokan. I had no problem with that, and nobody tried to coerce me. It did affect work somewhat (nobody picked up the ringing telephones), but I figure one minute once a year ought to be manageable. Factory assembly lines would be an entirely different matter. In a secular society like Japan's, I could see how this might become a problem.

For too long governments tolerated drug cartels because, while ruthless they were perceived as sensible businessmen driven by the profit motive. Most of the murders the cartels committed were limited to business rivals or dealers who skimmed too much. (The fact that the product they sold was killing people was acceptable, because it was their 'lifestyle choice' -- never mind that they had to engage in prostitution or steal to get money to feed their habit.) This short-sighted tolerance failed to anticipate what is happening now and it's clear that Mexico is descending into anarchy. If the U.S. implements laws that deprive Mexicans of one of their few escape valves -- illegal emigration -- the next step may be civil war. If that happens, the U.S. would have few options but to post armoured divisions on the north bank of the Rio Grande.

I agree. Half a dozen would be plenty in a country Japan's size. Shikoku and Kyushu would both become single prefectures. The USA would benefit from a similar move -- 10 states maximum.
