Firstly, I must claim credit for having felt, and frequently expressed, derision towards such celebrities several decades before Japan Today and the Internet ever existed. I think most of them are under-talented, overworked and definitely overexposed. The word "retirement" doesn't seem to be in their vocabulary. Once they get their foot in the door of showbiz, they remain ubiquitous until rigor mortis sets in. So here's a question for you, JT: Why do Japanese viewers insist on watching the antics of the same performers seven nights a week?

America: "Tell you what, China: we'll start giving a cold shoulder to the Dalai Lama after you stop propping up the regime of that people-abducting, drug-smuggling, arms-dealing, currency-counterfeiting, nuclear-armed maniac in Pyongyang."

True, but the laws during the Edo period banned not only Christianity but any upstart Buddhist and Shinto sects.
I wish the writer had done the job of researched this better. How many is many? How long were they forced into the hut? Were there any other punishments applied? How did word get out of their persecution? Did it happen in other parts of Japan or only here?
At any rate, Article 28 of the Meiji Constitution of 1889 reads, "Japanese subjects shall, within limits not prejudicial to peace and order, and not antagonistic to their duties as subjects, enjoy freedom of religious belief."

Guns don't die, people do. BTW, Starbucks Coffee outlets in many US states now permit licensed handgun holders to openly carry guns into the shops. So when you say their frappucinos are to die for, you might be right.

By giving up the advantage of surprise, NATO forces are inviting much higher casualties. The world has really changed: if this had been Vietnam the entire province would have been leveled by B-52 raids.

Asa was warned and told what was expected of him repeatedly. No one held a gun to his head and forced him to act in a wild and brutish fashion (which he certainly did). If he had opted to moderate his behaviour, he would have gained even more wealth, honour and respect from sumo fans and his peers. He has only himself to blame for his undoing.

I don't see anything new about Ginza keeping up with the times. In 1971, the first McDonalds opened a counter right on the street at the Ginza Mitsukoshi. I think the hoi polloi are more likely to be impressed by the place than truly wealthy and snobbish people, who do their shopping in Tokyo Midtown (or Saks Fifth Avenue).

It is truly laudable to see Ms. Palin keeping up the honourable American tradition of lowbrow populism.

Another typical uninformed remark. As in the US, juvenile misdemeanor records are buried in Japan and not accessible to the prosecutor's office.

This is a totally uninformed remark. The JSA imposes a compulsory retirement age of 65 on all its directors.

Japanese "kui-nige" -- literally eat and flee -- is indeed translated here. It is understandable but not as idiomatic as "leave without paying." (In English the "eat" part would be understood.)

ER, InTheKnow, neither Pele and Tiger Woods reside in any cemetery that I'm aware of. Mr. Honda's first name, for your information, was Soichiro.
That said, I agree with you that sumo will get over Asashoryu's loss soon enough, including the many fans who angrily posted in here that they will never, ever, ever watch sumo again.

I suppose this has to be decided on a case-by-case basis. Take the team of thieves from Hong Kong who flew here just to rob jewelry shops in Ginza. It is hard to underplay the fact that they are foreigners, and their heist got heavy coverage in the news. But foreigners who reside here legally deserve a degree of anonymity, at least until guilt or innocence is established.
