One hundred and twenty five million people, and you succeeded in finding one who represents the epitome of self-absorbed narcissism. Congratulations, JT!

I always wondered what happened to Raggedy Ann after she grew up...

I shall be finding out soon enough since I decided purchase of a digital TV would be a waste of money.

The uninformed grumbles in here over the MSDF naval ensign remind me of the occasional hysteria from people who mistake the Buddhist manji (卍)for the Nazi swastika. The Asahi Shimbun uses a similar rising sun symbol for its corporate logo, by the way.

Tokyo chefs mute and mutilate their dishes, turning formerly foreign food into culinary katakana—barely recognizable, its meaning unclear, but something Japanese people will, finally, attempt to put their mouths around.

Mr Jarvis, have you ever eaten chop suey in a restaurant in the United States? Finished off with a fortune cookie? Even the humblest gyoza establishment here does a better job. Likewise for spaghetti in Japan, although I'll pass on the natto garnished with yakinori variety. 'Methinks the man doth complain too much'.

The last Hooters I went to was in Pudong, Shanghai, and seated at the table beside me was a family of Muslims, including several women in hijabs. Go and figure....

Thanks for these informative lessons in the refinements of political repression. Someone ought to compile them into a textbook.

It seems to me the article is suggesting there's going to be nearly a clean sweep, with that one exception. It takes more than skill at the game to make it in the major leagues -- the US season is longer and so are the travel distances from city to city between games.

Hermit kingdom North Korea seems to have discovered an inexhaustible supply of terror by which to intimidate its population.

So the question is : will he get purged, or is change actually possible.

Neither. This is typical of their good-cop, bad-cop routine that's been going on for some time. It keeps the hoi polloi off balance.

I respectfully suggest the name of the country be changed to the 'Disunited States of Political Gridlock' until the voters come to their senses, overthrow their oppressors and restore the Whig Party.

Hell of a way to lose a war -- running out of petrol. I guess the same thing happened to Rommel's Afrika Corps.

We should at least be grateful he proved incompetent as a bomb-maker. He'll be released after 8 years for good behaviour and then he can go home to Pakistan and herd sheep.

No system can override a country's cultural underpinnings. Enlightened self-interest in many cultures simply means stealing as much as you can grab.

Here's a safe prediction for you all: After the next bus full of commuters blows up in London or Berlin, the defenders of jihadists in here will blame that on the CIA and Mossad as well.

Another memorable book and film from the 1960s was John Ball's "In the Heat of the Night", in which homicide cop Virgil Tibbs (played by Sidney Poitier) ran rings around Mississippi good old boys. Tibbs and the redneck sheriff played by Rod Steiger parted amicably. The locale used for the filming of the fictional "Sparta, Mississippi" was actually in southern Illinois.

LOL, I can remember tasteless TV contests here many years ago in which contestants vied for the title of "Misu Daikon Ashi" (giant radish legs). Japanese ladies have certainly come a long way, although they still don't know how to look sexy walking in high heels and their rumps are too flat to look good in a cheongsam or sarong.

Where is the best place, in general, to sit on a plane?

It doesn't matter. Murphy's Law states you will be located next to a hysterical baby, or in a seat between the loo and a very obese woman with bladder problems. Or else in front of someone who vigorously pounds the touch screen on your seat back to play Super Mario all the way from Narita to Sao Paulo.
