When someone offers money to politician for a favor, it's called a bribe. When a politician offers money (which is what a tax cut is) to a voter in order to get elected, it's not called a bribe, but should be. In both cases, the trading of favors/votes for money is corruption, plain and simple. It's endemic in the US political system. And people have the gall to complain about why their government is performing so badly???

Ten years from now you'll be able to ask an American teenager if he's ever heard of the Tea Party. He'll say 'Huh?' shrug, and go back to watching his MTV programme. I believe the Yank idiom to be applied here is 'flash in the pan'.

Most of the journalists I know are busy killing themselves, with alcohol. It's a wonder they get any work done at all.

TimRussert@how about the IWW -- 105 years old this year? The Green Party? The 'No-nothings'? Even the American Communist Party, which attracted huge rallies in the 1930s. It could even be argued that Strom Thurmond's Dixiecrats are still in existence, ('Fighting integration and equal rights since 1948'). Tea partiers are just an angry splinter group whose rants, the cable TV networks have decided, are amusing enough to warrant footage in an election year.

Try as I might to be objective, the delays, indignities and inconvenience to which I am subjected every time I board an aircraft since 9/11 have badly bruised any feelings of magnanimity I may have once harboured toward practitioners of Islam. Now when one bends down to tie his shoestring, I discreetly confirm he's not applying a cigarette lighter to the end.

Thanks@Hermione, I prefer to control my searches and didn't realize this new feature could be turned off (thought it was my browser and not Google). I disenabled it and am happy to not have this annoying thing pop up any more.

Within one month's time, and probably less, we'll all be back in here listening to 2nd Amendments supporters explaining why the next mass slaughter in the USA is nothing to be concerned about.

It's time to mend fences. Michael Moore is taking up a collection for the mosque, and now that I think about it, it seems like a good idea. I shall write him a cheque. Here's more about Moore: http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mike-friends-blog/if-mosque-isnt-built-no-longer-america

Thanks, tkoind2. Actually I've always felt reassured that no matter how much antipathy a Sunni or Shiite might hold towards me, odds are they're far more likely to whack each other.

I watched it on BBC. Your mirroring my post to flaunt US political issues is really a cheap shot, manfromamerica.

Burning holy books is not a good idea. That said, it doesn't take much to provoke hysterical crowds in Pakistan, and the hundreds of millions of dollars in flood relief bought their good will for about... two weeks. Back to square one.

The three things you don't want to do as president are aggravate the National Rifle Association, the Oil Lobby and the wealthiest 2 percent of the population, who own the country. Besides, US voters expect to be bribed by their politicians (and dangling a tax as a political reward is certainly a form of bribery). The 2012 election is officially a tossup.
