They spew out high-decibel renditions of enka songs

I believe the tunes are called "gunka" (martial music), not "enka" (romantic ballads). Failure to make such a simple differentiation does not bode well for the assertions that follow.

Those "average" foreigners who would like to know more about the "lurid" kanji…

I've always felt laptops were a bit overpriced and full of features I didn't really need. Longer battery life is a prime concern, naturally. Huge storage space is not.

These days I often see moms pedaling down the street with their kid(s) on board while they tap out messages on their keitai. Anyone dumb enough to do that should be made to sweat out the good part of an afternoon in the local police station.

Who decided baseball is an Olympic sport?

Well, it's still more of a sport than girls in leotards twirling hula hoops and rolling balloons. Obviously the modern-day Olympics have become one big marketing event for corporations (with a generous dollop of nationalistic fervor thrown in for good measure). I'm disconnecting…

Come on, Korea, you spineless wimp. Let's see you get tough. Withdraw your ambassador, break off diplomatic relations, and lay mines across the Genkai-nada. Maybe you can even persuade that wacko with the funny hairdo in Pyongyang to sell you one of his nuclear toys.

I guess the best thing you could say about waiwai was that it showed that Japanese had more interesting stuff on their minds than the constantly repeating plot of a Tora-san movie (or an NHK travel documentary). I can't believe the MDN was cranking out all that stuff with a…

This is nothing new. In the 1980s you could go to Yoyogi Park any Sunday and it was like a Halloween party. Japanese have great fantasy lives. They're a nation of Walter Mittys.
