Could be. Personally, I never got into O'Brien--just not that funny IMO.
But I suspect this whole flap was concocted by the religious-right fascist to divert attention from the murders of the gynecologist and museum guard recently, and the implications that the right-wing-nut media created the hateful climate in which these murders felt compelled to carry out their evil deeds.

Tragic event, but it would be more tragic if folks didn't learn from this:
1) Carry one of those super cheap, very loud whistles when hiking in the wilds. 2) Stay within shouting range of your partner. 3) Don't risk a helicopter in bad weather--wait it out if possible.
