"Rapeplay", the high culture of Japan.

""You cannot tell me what is appropriate or inappropriate for me to watch"... and they would be absolutely correct".

Tahoochi, it's with thoughts like that that can make this world a crazy and sometimes dangerous place for us to live in. Furthermore, not everyone shares the same values as you do.

Japan has had about 60 years to really sow things up with America, but it absolutely blew its chance. Time moves on and so do friendships. What does Japan offer America that China doesn't?

Have to love how the Japanese constantly brag about the safety of their food, but things like this incident constantly pop up.

Words at times like this, are just too hard to find ... the serious garbage Japan throws out, does it really have anything meaningful to contribute to the world?

Massive money + humans = massive cheating on a massive scale.

Are there any professional sports that don't have this problem? Hey, pole sitting doesn't count as I doubt it is professional.

I have to agree with magpie here, drug use in sports ruins the integrity of the game.

Pepin, that speed is believeably true. The reports I've watched and read, said that the reason that why so many people have been killed, and even though these people appeared to have escape plans in place, was the speed of the fire. People have been saying they have never seen anything like this at all, the winds have really powered those fires to incredible strengths.

My uncle's house is in Marysville. There were twenty houses left after the blaze, fortunately for him his house is one of them. But the people with houses left are tormented by being so lucky and seeing their friend's houses destroyed. Even to survive can bring feelings of sadness.

This is a hard question and very difficult to answer as many different groups have had a hand in creating the problem.

School teachers teach have traditionally taught it as a subject, much like science and math which has ended up creating students that speak like text books.

English schools for the most part are just plain bad, they treat English as a cash cow. No real effort is made to actually help students learn the language. They're happy as long as the students enjoy their lessons and buy more.

I've seen a Berlitz commercial trying to shame people into learning. "Poor Mr. Suzuki can't speak English so he's holding the meeting up", which I find a disgusting way to adverstise a product.

The "native" English teacher is also a part of the problem. Many come here for the "overseas" experience, not knowing very much about it themselves. Classroom teaching techniques in many cases leave a lot to be desired. I've actually seen a teacher say that, "could've" is really, "could of" and the student looked completely bewildered at the end of the lesson. That particular teacher even though she was a very serious young lady, didn't really know many of the basics. Stories such as these can be heard from many, many places.

Finally, the students themselves. Many of them have no real reason to study. Many of them have become essentially brainwashed to think that Engish is a prerequisite for a successful life. So these people enter a school, not knowing how to study, not really wanting to study and becoming lazy learners when they realise that there is no easy way to study a language. They constantly fail to realise that they must study at home consistently and often.

    And ... /bah humbug I'm tired and I don't want to write an essay ... /rant off.

I think it would be fair to assume that when people like Ijima appear they will will always be badgered by certain reporters about certain questions for certain reasons (e.g. gossip, muck raking, more sensational news to get more readers etc).

At an event to promote her book, which most people would assume is to be a exciting thing, she would obviously be unhappy when some reporter comes along and asks questions that are completely irrelevant. I think most people would agree.

"This young woman died of HIV complications".

Show us the proof please or it would be a good idea to retract your statement.

Was the play in English or Japanese? A pity there is no more information here.

With many of these Japanese celebrities who go the US to perform, I'm interested to know who actually goes to watch them. And if it is regular people going to watch, is it because they go to see something (or someone in this case) unusual or they think those foreign entertainers really have something to offer the audience.

I think it was Globe, they did a big concert in Hawaii quite a few years ago and it caused quite a sensation here. But when the footage was shown on tv the audience seemed to be all Japanese.

Mannish, I used to find hilarious as it was two girls. Also Princess Princess, as none of the girls in that group looked like a princess in anyway, shape or form.

I thought I was bad, but someone people here have really overactive minds. She worked with HIV charities, so she must have AIDS or HIV? That is a pretty bizarre line of thought, especially since I doubt anyone on these boards would know about her bedroom habits in detail.

"She was a coward. But what was she supposed to do? If she came out and was truthful many powerful unscrupulous people may have lost money and became angry (at her).

    It's all about making $$$".

She was a coward about what, may I ask? And was supposed to tell what truth?

This classification by blood type reminds me of early last century (not that I was around at that time mind you) when some idiot tried to classify people by skull shape, just a load of rubbish that was eventually used for discrimination. As with most things in Japan it gets taken to an extreme and real, innocent people suffer for it due to this stupid garbage.

Ossan I just quickly read that article (as it nearly me beauty sleep time) and it seems to me that article is talking about recent Japanese actions in America as they have been thought to be rather invisible in their communities there, it is not about Japanese in Japan. I'll read that article again tomorrow more carefully though.

I might be mistaken here and please correct me if I'm wrong, but over the years it appears that the Japanese don't have the same sense of charity as you often see in the West. We often see the big names of course like Bill Gates and others with their huge foundations that made to help people. And even at a more grass roots level we see a lot of people from the US, UK, Australia, France, NZ helping out others in the world.

But, just in my experience anyway, I very rarely see people from Asia doing the same things. I'm not saying that they don't exist, but (once again) it just seems to me that, in this case Japanese people, aren't of the charitable kind and don't reach out to help others in trouble so much.

So, I'm pretty glad to see this chick try to help out. It mightn't be the best effort, but at least she is making an effort. Hopefully more things like this will catch on. Still I must agree, going completely naked probably would have made a lot more money ... hehe.

"Being given such precious jewelry, I feel like I have to behave as a more mature person".

Unfortunately, some stuff just doesn't carry across well on a cultural level, and that statement from Aya was a prime example.

I think most of the readers of JT are appreciate of the news that is made available to us in English, but most of us would be even more appreciate if JT had the time (which I know it doesn't) to omit certain comments from certain articles.

Another useless English book filled with snazzy, catchy words and useless one-liners. I heard somewhere that even North Korea and Mongolia score higher on most English tests than Japan does ... now I know why.
