The impression I get is that it is just another chance for them to make money, trying to get as many fingers into as many pies as possible. They've done books, book signings, sponsoring, dressing up to the nines and then appearing on some tacky variety karaoke show, cartoons even. Let's not get into the money they probably made from all the interviews about the time some of their jewellry was stolen either.
After years of playing the "let's play beautiful" gig, they want to turn themselves into well-mannered and respected icons of Japanese society? There are so many of these lame books out. If people don't have it in them already to have good manners, a book like this from people like ain't gonna help.

I saw Exile on KinSuma as well, the story was pretty good. But I think the difference between Smap and Exile is that for fans, Smap is pretty much easier to get into as the members do come across as more friendly (just my opinion of course). Smap guys smile during promo shots, Exile guys scowl (but at least they can dance).

800000 people are expected to attend? That is a quite a fan club. I know most of us here are not SMAP fans, but still getting 800000 people to a series of concerts is still pretty incredible.

I don't think it is all that difficult, it mostly depends on your motivation and need to study. Many people I know say kanji is hard, but I really don't think so. All it is just making the time the study and then finding opportunities to use what you've learned.

With Japanese culture and politics being what it was in the 1940s, I seriously doubt many of them would have had thoughts about not going to war. Having said that, and all thoughts about wars, who was right or wrong aside etc, these guys were just amazing. A pretty good article.

"Why does there have to be a note for it to be a suicide?".
Because it is one of those cultural expectations we have in life. In this case the average Japanese person would expect a note to be left if one commits suicide. Much the same thing as Japanese who will take their shoes off before jumping from a building.

No it isn't piroz. I have a few cabbie mates back home and they've told me all the same stories. But at least couples have asked them if they could "rent" the cab for an hour and so pay for it.

I believe this, when we have the world at peace for at least 20 years with no wars, invasions, terrorist incidents etc. etc. The Bush administration has said so much stuff over the last few years concerning this stuff and have rarely been right.

I think the consumer needs to get involved by taking a more active role in the political process. By taking an interest in whoever the candidates are at elections, by lobbying them and voting for those that will look after consumer interests things will change. But with the amount of apathy around, I can't really see that happening.
Simply saying, "I want domestic, safe stuff", simply isn't good enough. Domestically produced Japanese foodstuffs aren't safe. The recent scandals prove that, and we can go back years and look at minata-byo, all the dioxin coming from Tokorozawa as well as many others, it's all been catalogued and placed in the papers. In fact your local grocer might be one of those people involved and hasn't been busted yet.
Only by taking an interest and making the politicians turn things around will the country become safe again.

Due to bad lighting on a very bad road my sister-in-law hit a parked car (doh!) at 60kmph while she was driving and pregnant. Luckily she was wearing a seatbelt and the car had an airbag. She survived with a bad scare and bruising and unborn son was perfectly okay.

It's hardly a matter of intelligence narnia, it's just a matter of taste. English is seen as something that is "cool" in Asia and so many "Western" artists can get a big following here.
But it's the reverse in many English-speaking countries. For many people an extra language is something nice, but it's not necessarily seen as something that is so cool or necessary.
Therefore for the immediate future at least, people like BoA will be relegated to a niche market.
P.S. Can you just imagine a bunch of truckers going ga-ga over Morning Musume?
