"I think talking on the train is a weird social law, in other countries it is perfectly fine to answer your phone on a bus or train".
Exactly the same in Japan. I've never seen anyone worry about answering their phone on a bus or train.
I especically hate it on the Keio line, in the "omoiyari" zones people brazenly use their phones and no one bats an eye.

That's just great, but I wish she could hold a tune. Quite a nice lady, but she just can't sing. Her "cuteness" as a Chinese teenager in Japan really got her audience.

Haven't seen her on tv much over recent years unfortunately. In the late 90s she seemed to be everywhere you looked.

Got to love how in this day and age, Japanese police still tie up suspects (as if handcuffs aren't enough).

I've often wondered what it must be like to be the parent of these people who commit these types of crimes. And I feel so very sorry for some of them like this lady. I just couldn't imagine what it must be like to look at someone/thing and know the damage that my child had caused.

Well, considering that if any sex happens on a date and the consequences that might occur (i.e. baby) I believe that women are more selective about their dates. Of course not everyone makes the best decisions about their partners.

Have you ever asked a Japanese, "Who is most qualified to raise children, men or women?". I have and it was something I also studied at university in Japanese sociology (minor subject for me though). The overwhelming majority will say, "Of course women are most qualified". As women have the babies, the courts award the children to their mothers.
I think most people here will think that line of thinking is something from a much older age and very antiquated, but that is the Japan we are stuck with for the time being.

Anyone see the movie released in the 80s I think it was? Whenever I get on an airplane I don't look out the window anymore, just in case ...
But the original b&w, that was truly an incredible show!! Really good stuff.

I was pretty surprised by Hatoyama's speech. After hearing a lot on Japanese tv about how good his English was, he sounded extremely average when he gave it. He sounded more monotone than having any "substance".

"Behind the scenes deals"? Coming from the Japanese who are said to excel at these tactics (anyone heard some of the rumours about the Nagano Winter Olympics?), it is just laughable and a case of sour grapes. It is a game everyone plays to some extent these days I believe (and one of the reasons why I don't watch the Olympics much). But anyway, he should have congratulated the winner and bowed out gracefully ... but he chose to complain and will be remembered as a bad sport.

"English teachers get paid a ton of cash, a programmer with a 4 near CS degree will only get 3-5 million a year in Japan, a full time English teacher with no degree will get 7-10 million".
Pure fantasy. Or hopefully just being sarcastic ...

It would be great to know the real reason why they were together.
And those rumours about NOVA getting the best real estate thanks to Yakuza connections were around when I first arrived in Japan nearly 18 years ago.

One of the things I truly hate is "business" English which I see advertised so often. I really would like to know what it is. Is it so much different to regular English? I think it is just a term which some company invented to further milk the cash cow. Getting some recent university gradutate to teach it is just as laughable.
I'm not against anyone teaching English at all, after all it is simply about teaching one's own knowledge and experiences to another. But how could anyone who has never worked in the field of English teaching something without having done it themselves? How could anyone who has just recently graduated know anything about this subject?

I don't fully understand the background of this of course, but write that they have never met Sakai or her husband in order to avoid claims about drug use seems pretty weak and childish.
Anyway, hopefully the movie will be pretty good. I'll be lining up to see it.

Ah ... I remember why it may be infamous. I went there last week during Silver week and I noticed that you needed a sheet to sit on the grass there. And those small plastic sheets they had on sale were for 300 yen!! I thought that was a rip-off ... yes, completely infamous!!!
