if the city had 200,000 citizens at the time as is generally agreed, it is quite possible the murder toll could be around 300,000 as we count in some simple facts:
1) it was the CAPITAL of the country. millions fled in front of japanese army advancing from shanghai to seek refuge in presumed safety of the capital, the seat of the government etc.
2) chinese gov. victim count includes surrounding counties as well, nanjing as a geographic unit rather then administrative one.
personal opinion; when you count in different accounts by relatively objective sources the picture of berserk army unleashed on campaign of terror on civilians for as long as two whole months, at least tacitly approved by the officer corps seems to me undeniable. the end result might be some tens of thousands people more or less but it does not make that much of a difference in the big picture, which is as nasty as it gets.

another deluge of sickening moralising in the comments, denouncing the “cruelty”, “inhumanity" (my personal favourite is the one that calls her beyond sub-human, which would make her what-human?) and “criminality” of the woman diverting attention from the underlying social crisis that drives individuals to such lengths. alienation and atomization of society as well as individualization of responsibility for collective problems that systematically places unfair burden on the weakest should be addressed rather than going for skin deep corrections and scapegoating. notwithstanding, the woman should be held criminally responsible; but we should also recognize that anyone, including -god forbid the very thought- ourselves (ouch) might as well come to similar decisions in similar circumstances.

while agreeing with other posters there is also one aspect of this that has not been dealt with properly, namely financial and or economic reasons.
the capital so dominates over the individual here that for instance you must inherit a persons debt if you don't want to give up any right to inheritance at all which is inhuman in my view. also, in you default on a real estate loan you no only get the estate confiscated you get stuck with the difference that remains between the price reached once the creditor has disposed of the property and the net worth of your debt in the first place. in other words you lose the property but are still under debt, with interest. mind boggling...
not to mention the need for guarantors for any loan so if one defaults your family and/or friends go down as well. the suicide not only clears all this it helps put a positive balance on things because a lot of japanese life insurance policies indeed do pay a premium even in the case of suicide (there are also those that exclude it as well, but majority). so people are often put in a situation where not only do they feel like they have no way out, the suicide offers itself as a win win deal - the only way to delete the negative (debt) and as a plus leave something positive behind (a fat premium).
financial system need to change so that the rights of borrowers are balanced with the rights of creditors, from the present situation where the creditors only are over protected at the expense of borrowers. the gambaro culture and a lot of other traits that lead to suicide are just an end result of deeper, fundamental relations between capital and individual, the former all-powerful and in control - the latter insignificant and impotent (shy if you will).

or is there another reason for relocation we're not being told?

how about this one:
since the biggest reason for moving the base is it's supposed risk and nuisance for the city that surrounds it try relocating the entire city instead!
it seems that in the end it would be politically cheaper and you can count on gratitude on receiving end too, who wouldn't welcome more tax paying citizens with all the government spending that comes with them and all.
better still, move only those sectors of people who are opposed to the base, as some would prefer to stay probably. if nothing it seems feasible

i would most certainly say that this is a political action even though it's been carried out by a single individual. he clearly states that he will no longer run in circles getting the same old result, that being insanity. he will however do something different in search of some change. by attacking a gov building he demonstrates what is it that he would like to see changed and stipulates that not only the violence can bring about that change but he believes nothing but violence can. and he follows through on that belief. you can not get more political then this without grouping with others. was this terrorism? in a sense that it uses violence and threat of further escalation, and indirectly calling on others to follow, in order to fulfill a political goal or start a political action there are elements to qualify him as terrorist...

again in the minority it seems but curling involves a lot of practice to get to the skills displayed at the olympic level. if snooker of golf pass for sports then curling does so for sure. i can see the reasoning behind criticizing subjectively judged sports such as figure skating or half pipe but there's simply no other way is it. bob sleigh would be a nice candidate to drop, too risky, competitive element fails to reach most of the audience, preparations, maintenance, equipment all way to expensive...

limboinjapan, thanks for your insight. i never considered people recruited from abroad. also, i'm very sorry to hear about your situation. age discrimination as perceived by a lot of "westerners" does seem to be the norm in japan in any industry i know of. the only difference would be some forms of unskilled light labor where they prefer reliable and desperate retirees over cocky 20something freeters. i hope you will be able to find smt and earn enough for you and your kids although it's gonna be quite a feat for sure. as i am between jobs at the moment myself i can certainly relate. good luck!

J gov official numbers for the industry as provided by mr. rogers last time are quite indicative:
in 2000 (earliest data) you have 4,000 regular employees (seishain) versus 1,400 others (part, short term) and then at the end of 2009 (latest) there's 2,300 regulars and 3,000 smt of others.
any insiders care to share their thoughts on reasons or background to this?
from outside it certainly seems as if the whole industry is being "fast-fooded" as suggested by some on the previous thread.

he lost even that and ended on the street? i can certainly see where did all that pent up grievance come from

the question is should the HEADLINES include nationality, not should it be reported at all. and, as said above, since the nationality is not the main point of the news there is very little if any reason for it to take the valuable space of the few words headlines normally have. so for example, rather than saying "brazilian man arrested for hit and run" adding more content to the headline like "man arrested for hit and run, denies crime" is far more appropriate IMO. of course, DETAILS like NATIONALITY can appear in the main body of the article and no one disputes that i believe.

interesting to know vatican has a police service, as they are referred to in the article. do they have a prison in vatican as well, to depo the apprehended by them? she is now under their arrest so vatican will presumably put her on vatican court also? a viable city state indeed

upskirt shots really seem to be the thing for a lot of people recently. i personally witnessed one case yesterday on my way to work near ikebukuro sta. the guy actually returned to take another shot which prompted me to take a photo of him as an evidence and to try and report him but as usual nowhere a cop in sight. as i was late for work i left it at that but am still wondering what are we supposed to do when confronted with things like that. i would certainly like to do something but what do you think would be the most effective (realistically) way of going about it? anyone?
