Yikes, just re-read my post above, and must apologize for all the typos. At any rate, I agree with the majority of the postors here who say that Ishihara is a sore loser, and a racist. I'll grant you too that the IOC isn't totally clean (but then again, what sports entity is totally clean?), but, as others have said, to blame the loss of the Games Bid on everyone else but yourself is pretty low, and certainly worthy of being called a sore sport. The reason, Gaijinocchio, that Ishihara is elected and re-elected is because there are enough Tokyo-ites who believe the same way he does who will vote him back in every time.
Personally, I think Tokyo needs to give up their bid to Fukuoka or Osaka....really any city other than Tokyo because of Ishihara: this racist bigot doesn't deserve such a feather in his cap. He is always quick to blame foreginers for Topkyo's, Japan's, and the world's ills, but will ot take blame upon himself when he fails....

I've lived in Japan awhile, and I've seen her gracing the covers of Men’sWeeklies enough to know that she's baring more than just her legs. As far as her "privacy" issues, how is it invading her privacy when someone takes a foto of her when she's out in Public? And if she won that case, then that just makes her more pathetic in my book. So much for freedom of expression in Japan, especially when a photo-journalist takes a snap in public. Wasn't like he tailed her or anything.

Sure, let's blame the IOC abnd "backroom deals" rather than just plain admit failure to win anyopne over to Tokyo hosting the games. After all, it can't possibly be that Ishihara is viewed as a racist and a bigot, and tends to blame Tokyo's problems not on his own inept leadership and corruption, but on foreigners.
Really, this story doesn't come as a surprise. Governor Ishihara has been blaming others for his own and for Tokyo's failings for so long that this is a predictable response form him. When we throw out the facts -- such as South America never having hosted the Olympics, and Rio having a pretty darn good bid, let alone the welcoming spirit that Brazilians tend to have for foreigners -- its easy to point fingers at shadows and phantoms, such as "back room deals". Let's blame a foreign entity for supporting and followoing shady deals wehn there isn't a shred of verifiable or even unverifiable evidence to prove usch claims, all the while extolling the "virtuousness" of the JOC and its bid for the Games.
And does anyone want to knwo the sad and tragic thing about this accusation? The citizens of Tokyo and of Japan will believe it enough to re-elect this joker back into office for anothger term. Pathetic to say the least. Thanks for beign a sore loser, Gov. Ishiohara. If you ever lose a Tokyo Governor's election, it will be tellign to see how you portray such a loss....

Disillusioned, why can't there be a simple answer? Why isn't violence against such cowards so grotesque to some people? I dare-say, if it were someone you loved who had been or was being groped, you'd want to teach the groper a thing or two. If it happened to my wife, especially while I was in her company, I'd teach the groper some manners myself, the "legal" consequences to the flames. I guarantee you that if a woman were to respond with some violence to one of these pervs, they'd think twice about doing it again. Anything less is teaching women to be and to continue as silent victims...

Didn't watch much ZERO, but I did watch NHK a lot over the last few months, and the way they were reporting things, Tokyo appeared to be THE Choice for the Olympics. Didn't even see very much on the citizenry of Tokyo being down on support. They did mention that the Tsukiji Market was being moved, and that public opinion abut that was against such a move, but as far as support or the lack thereof for Tokyo's bid, there was very little reported. NHK 7 o'clockl and 9 o'clock news respectively did a lot of puff pieces on the selection, and they made it look and sound like Tokyo was going to win, even making some pretty bogus claims about Rio de Janeiro, and how the IOC was more impressed with Toyko than Rio, as well. Channel 10 (not sure which outlet or company that is) did the same. Could be the Tokyo-based channels were simply producing biased reporting to make Tokyo look better to the citizens.
As far as Chicago and Chicago-US Television and Media, I don't know: I've seen very little US TV coverage about the Olympic Bid, so you, Hotbox08, know more about that than I do. Personally, I'm delighted that Rio won the Bid. Havng been there some years ago, I sincerely believe that hosting the Olympic Games will be an awesome, good thing for Rio and for Brazil. Congrats to Rio and Brazil!

Not impressed by her. She can bare it all or most of it for any rag that offers her the money, but the minute a reporter takes a photo of her and her son out walking, she hasa hissy fit and throws the photographer into court, suing him and his employer for gazillions of yen. Amazing how the shameless have selective shame....

When I was in Junior High, there were between six and ten people who bulied me every day for an entire school year, and most of the bullies were girls. Is it possible to survive being bullied when seemingly nobody will listen to you when you report it? Well, I did. This bullying actually went on from my 8th grade year until my sophomore year of high school. Did I think of suicide? MANY times. However, there were people around me who encouraged me, prayed for me, and helped. My Dad suggested that I pray for those who were bullying m,e. Now, I know what a lot of the people on Japan Today think about God, prayer, and anything Christian or Religious, but I will tell you that praying for these six-to-ten people every day for three years worked. Today, 2o years after we all graduated high school together, all ten of them are friends. Yes, there is help waiting for anyone who is being bullied. All you hafta' do is ask, and He'll be there. Yes, I did take my frustrations out in other ways, and other avenues, such as weight lifting, football, and biking, but the key was praying for those bullies. Doubt what I'm saying? I DARE anyone to try it....

Actually, Hotbox06, I have. In fact, every time I turned on the TV, and there was a report about Tokyo and the bid for the Games, the media made it look like Tokyo was a sure thing and a shoo-in. In the Spring, they even belittled Rio's chances, stating that the IOC felt Tokyo was better than Rio because the infrastructure was better, and because Rio had poverty issues. Madrid wasn't even mentioned in any of the reports I saw, while Chicago was portrayed as Tokyo's only "real" competition. Of course, I don't stay glued to the television all day, but I saw a great many news reports, and all of them gave next to nothing to the rest of the candidate cities' chances, all the while, Tokyo was viewed asd the front runner, and, again, the only "real" runner for the games.

While the GOP does have a point, the fact of the matter is, every other candidate city's country's president or leader was there. President Da Silva of Brazil, PM Hatoyama of Japan, and PM Zapatera of Spain all gave pitch speeches; why not the US President too?
Madverts, we could ask the same of the Democrats just one year ago....
McC72 - I distinctly remember Democrat opposition to President Bush's trip to Beijing. If I remember correctly, I believe the Honorable Speaker of the House had soem choice words for President Bush and his trip to Red China...
biglittleman - The Republicans are gaining momentum because the President and his Democrat colleagues on the hill cannot take a hint: the American People DO NOT WANT socialized medicine, which is what this plan by President Obama and his allies basically boils down to. The fact that he and they are trying to ram-rod this through congress and get it passed into law is the reason why the GOP is ganing momentum....not because people are stupid and have a short attention span or memory....and certainly having NOTHING t do with President O's trip to Copenhagen...

LFRAgain - apologies, as I didn't see that you had taught in the Japan public school system for 9 years. Apparently you do know what it is about. I stil lsay, though, that the statement above about English Classes taught by Japanese Teachers being boring has a lot of truth (whether English is purposely tuaght that way, I know not....).

"So high schools since then have been instructed to make English as boring and meaningless as possible."
A pretty-much true statement. I teach Oral Communication in a private Junior-Senior High School for Girls in Tokyo, and for the most part, my Senior High classes are the worst, especially 1st and 2nd year classes. The girls in these classes by-and-large would rather be doing something else than sitting in an English Class, and usually end up chit-chatting with each other in Japanese, even in the classes where the students are really motivated to learn. On top of that, I have no real authoirty to punish or discipline them even if they really, really act up in class. The only thing I can do is write them up in a report and send that to a Japanese superior. The worst that the J-Administration has done? Sent the homeroom teacher into my class to "observe" the troublemakers during class. It did help, but seeing how the students rarely study for tests, even more rarely turn in or show me completed homework, or merely abide by the simple rule to SPEAK ENGLISH IN ENGLISH CLASS, there is really very little I am able to do to control the class or really help them to learn how to do anything in English.
This is by far the biggest load of crap I've seen in this thread so far . . . And that's saying a lot, after WMD's rants.
--LFRAgain
Nope, hits pretty close to the truth. If you really want to know what it is like, try teaching a classroom of 25-30 unmotivated High School students who've had Japanese Teachers fort he most part teach Englihs as if it is like going to the dentist for a rot canal.
