In World War Two, wasn't there a set or two of plans to try and tetch off Hitler and his buddies? And here I thought that the USA and Great Britain were at war with the Taliban and Al-Qaeda....

Interesting that Koreans -- who are aggressively teaching their children English starting in Elementary school -- still speak Korean in Korea, and only happen to speak English either (A.) Outside of Korea (and still speak Korean when they are among themselves in other countries), or (B.) when they are around a Western Foreigner (whether that Western Foreigner speaks English or not). What is further interesting is how Koreans are quickly becoming more bilingual (and multi-lingual, for that fact) over and above the Japanese, further integrating South Korea into the International Stage. Japan could learn a lesson from Korea and their English Education....

Posted in: A fervor for education in English without a national strategy is a recipe for the decline of Japanese. If everyone tries to speak English, the richness of Japanese could be reduced to a local language in which no intellectual conversations take place.

Nobody's saying that, Altria. However, it is interestign that Japanese parents tend to bring their children back to Japan, where the foreign husband or wife has no recourse. Interesting that it is admitted that J-parents separating form their foreign spouses and bringing children back to Japan is a growing trend.

While some foreign husbands may be violent, I've heard that Japanese men can get quite unhinged at their wives, for even trifling reasons. This sounds just like another lame excuse. Join the Hague Convention already, Japan! Please, enter the 21st century....

Good going, Yukiko! Hopefully, this will be an encouragement to other women to be courageous, and to gropers to watch out (but in the latter case, I doubt it seriously)....

There is only one reason, and one reason alone, that North Korea is doing this. It has vewry little to do with the 6-party talks, and more to do with one, mitigating factor. If North Korea seriously starts dropping nukes, they'd be immensly stupid, something I think Kim Jongil is not. However, he will continue doing his thing for some tme to come, basically because he knows he can, and any U.N. "Sanctions" that come about as a result will carry no teeth, and there is one, glaringly clear reason why....

It really makes me wonder what people really are like when I hear over and over ad nauseum about how terribly Michael Jackson was, and as proof, the $20M out-of-court settlement for a kid who -- at first -- said Michael Jackson was NOT a pedophile and WAS NOT going to press chargesw, until his parents came along and decided to press, and the boy changed his story. He was later tried in court, only to be found not guilty. Now, he has passed away. Tragically, he was a relatively young man at age 50. The real tragedy, though, is the fact that there are those who continue to drag his name through the mud. I have a little advice for anyone who has chosen or who later will choose to, see Jackson's death as some event to spew venom:

(1.) So you didn't like his music, and you weren't a fan? Who cares? Obviously, nearly a billion people were his fans to the tune that he sold 750 million albums, not including the number sold as a part of the Jackson Five. He has the highest selling album of all time, said album having an as-yet-unbroken record of 7 #1s. So yu didn't ike his music? Okay, good for you. Now, let those of us who did mourn the death and cut-short life of a man who was immenently talented.

(2.) So you think he really WAS guilty? Who gives a rip? He was tried in a court of his peers and found innocent. This was no OJ trial, where the evidence presented wasn't enough, no smoking gun was found, and he feigned remorse. This was a trial where, though he had gone through a similar situation a dozen years before, Jackson willingly took the stand in his own defense (for the record, O.J. didn't), the jury seeming to agree that he was, indeed, innocent. If he really was guilty, where was the boy and family who were given the $20M settlement? Why were they strangely silent? And don't give us the legal mumbo-jumbo, because if Jackson seriusly had been a pedophile, the earlier situation would have weighed heavily, and the boy and his family subpoenaed.

(3.) So he was just another man and his death should be covered as such? When your heroes, idols, or other celebs or heroes that you emmulate and revere (if you have any. I've come to see that people who p_ _ _ on other peoples' graves generally have existences that are bereft of any true or real heroes) pass away, if I don't like that particular person, can I run over their grave with the same ferocity as many have run over Jackson's? What goes around comes around...

(4.) So you think its okay to p _ _ _ on other peoples' graves? Remind us again why it is important to mourn the person, hero, or celeb yo revere when s/he/they pass....

    Ah_so:

"I hate to appear to split hairs, but he was found "not guilty". Not guilty is not proof of innocence."

Maybe not here in Japan, but in the USA, it is. It is Innocent until PROVEN GUILTY. Michael Jackson was never proven to be a pedophile, so history must look at him as he was: tried, but found innocent (not guilty).

He was a nicon and a juggernaut if entertainment when I was in Jr. High and High School. I liked a lot of his songs, but wasn't a huge fan. Nevertheless, this is a huge tragedy. I first heard of his death during a free period at the school I teach in, and was stunned. As with 9/11 and the Challenger disaster, I'll always remember where I was when I heard aobut Jackson's passing. My prayers are with his family...
