Eyeblack - Neither did India's Prime Minister, the French President, nor any other dignitary when they have come to Japan in the past. Did they, too, insult the Emperor?

I'd say professional athletes: Marion Jones, Tiger Woods, Rafael Palmeiro, Mark MacGwire, Kobe Bryant, and many others immediately come to mind....

Ah, so, numbskull, Tiger DIDN'T make a profit on his being on Television? Tiger in fact, DIDN'T give the media full acess to himself prior to this scandal, and thereby make himself available for interview after interview concerning his rise to and existence in prominence of golf? He DIDN'T sign his name to endorsement after endorsement after endorsement in order to reap the bounties of his golfing prowess, even so far as going on television and radio airwaves, magazines, and newspapers asking people to do business with the products he endorsed by them using his name and image...a name and image we, the viewing public, were led to believe was squeaky clean, wholesome, and family-oriented?

Please, numbskull, if you're going to pass judgment and slander me with labels, please feel free to answer these questions. The man passed himself off as some sort of upstanding family man, causing a surge in golf attendance and viewing merely by his presence on the varuious courses and in tournaments he has participated in, passing himself off as having upright values, all the while, he was filandering around with other women.

To set the record straight for my part, numbskull, when I first heard of Tiger's marital failings with an alleged mistress, I prayed the story was untrue and unfounded. I've been a Tiger Woods fan for years, and honestly, he was the only reason I bothered to watch golf in the first place. I daresay that there are millions more like myself. However, after finding out that there are now as many as 16 mistresses, I have no pity for the man. His image is ruined, and sadly so. His family is stained and broken, tragically so. For anyone to wish ill on anyone else is terrible, and I certainly do not wish for this to happen to anyone else. However, beign a customer of the products that Tiger has endorsed, and watchign the tourneys he has participated in my money has become part of his salary. As such, it is my wish that he would come clean. NBo-one is prying inot his life; it is he that has set his life up as something it really wasn't and banked off of that. As such, it is every person's right to know what he has really been doing, especially if their hard-earned money has been spent purchasing things he endorsed, thereby paying his salary...

Makes me wonder just what's going on behind the scenes. Did the mother move, not give an address or phone number, and has basically been denying her ex-husband his visitation rights? What else has been going on? It's clear that the Dad has had to go to extreme measures in order to spend some time with his boy. In his shoes, what other man would not go to such extreme measures, and such great risks?

Maria - What is so traumatic for the boy? After all, it was his Daddy that pulled him from Nursery School.

Pretty sad that things had to come to this for the Dad. We know no details, no other infor than that he and his wife divorced, and this Dad, for whatever reason, was driven to "abduct" his son in order to spend soem time with him. I'll pass no judgment here, but the details of this simple story beg the question, "Why did this Dad have to 'abduct' his son in order to spend time with him?"

Maria - How is it traumatic for the child? Seeing his Dad is traumatic?

    Hmmmm....

Interesting that this debate always has to rage. Christians want to celebrate the holiday as the celebration of Jesus Christ's earthly birth. Jews and posteltyes want to scelebrate Hannukah. Some African Americans want to celebrate Kwanzaa. And finally, Agnostics don't want "religion shoved down their throats."

Newsflash to Agnostics - This time of year has been a religious occasion for centuries, even before the Early Church made December 25th the day to celebrate the Birth of Christ. Nobody is trying to shove religion down anyone's throat. Its just that this time of year brings religious observation naturally. It's kinda' like what Easter does in the Spring.

Why don't we just do this: why don't we just celebrate and have fun? While I realize that there are militant Agnostics who want to do away with religion, religious tradition, and say "Down with anything having to do with Jesus Christ", the fact fo the matter is, Christmas is the time of year for such. If agnostics don't like it, too bad. That's just how it is. Yes, this is rather blunt, but agnostics seem to be getting their way in other aspects of life (In the USA there is no prayer or mention of Jesus Christ in public school; the bogus ideology of separation of Church and State; the ACLU ready to help agnostics at the drop of a hat).

Christmas is a religious holiday, and a religious time of the year. If one wishes to celebrate Hannukah, celebrate Hannukah; if one wants ot celebrate Kwanzaa, celebrate Kwanzaa; if one merely wants to celebrate family, presents, and having fun, then please, by all means, celebrate family, presents, and having fun. But please stop whining about it being a "Religious" time of the year. That's what it is and has been for millenia...

Reiner - If I see any of the above that you mentioned getting it from soemone for no apparent reason, yes, I'd step in. However, in this case, Terence Lee asked -- ASKED -- for his come-uppance. In usch a case, no, I'd not intervene...but would help the loser to get to a hopsital...

I will admit though that the bait and switch thing works a lot here, and is often used. My wife and I went to a seminar in Tokyo that we were led to believe was a live event....only to find out that it was a DVD played on a huge screen down front. We didn7t go bac kfor the resto fthat day or the next....

"Japan, it seems, is fast becoming an 'ichamon' society, where people don’t merely raise complaint, but make false charges and pick fights at the slightest pretext."

Isn't this what happened to "toughman" Terence Lee? He got bumbed by a department store clerk, and decidee to take the Clerk aside to "talk" abut it....only to end up gettign his kiester kicked, and filing a police report (and having the man arrested) for a fight he picked!

And I agree about the complaints coming at educators and school administrators. A mother complained to the college administration where I was teaching, demanding to meet me, the English Department Chiar, and the College President to explain why her son didn't pass my class. When I showed the Vice-President that the boy in question had missed 80% of his classes, turned in no homework, tests, projects, nor reports, and failed all of his tests, it silenced her.

Pathat - Agree, and ditto that for Mexican women, Brazilian women, and Korean women.

Also, I'd recommend the temples and other cultural aspects of Japan.

Yes and Yes. Yes, Tiger is fair game for the media because he used the media as an income earning tool, therefore, the media has every right to pry into his life, especially in a matter liek this.

A tell-all interview with a trusted journalist or talk-show host would do wonders for Tiger, I believe. It would give him a forum to tell his side o' things, and to set the record straight. Certianly at this point, TV interview would be a great help.....

nandkadamanda - She shares the blame? For what? Apparently, she didn't know aobut the mistresses. Should she be blamed for not going with Tiger to every tourney because of being home to take care of the children? And how do you she is cold? Why should we assume she was anything other than an adoring wife who stayed closet o home and hearth while her man went out and gained the fame? How do we know that she didn't give up her promising modeling career to marry the man of her dreams, give him children and take care of them? It would seem the last two would be the case.

Sorry, nandkadamanda, it does take two to make a marriage, but only one to break one, and despite all these lovey-dovey fans and their feelings of sadness for Tiger, and the need to pile on his wife for some nonexistent wrong, the fact of the matter is, Tiger played, and now his havign to pay. Whatever her motivation for marriyng Tiger and for him to marry her, what Tiger did was WRONG: absolutely and positively W-R-O-N-G. Casting blame on Elin Nordegrin is preposterous at best, ludicrous at worst. If she decides to leave him and take the kids with her to Sweden, she is right to do so for his filandering.

As I mentioned on another story, Tiger is gettign everything he deserves. How many mistresses is it now? 13? 14? 15? My heart breaks for his wife and children. But Tiger? I have no pity. He's made his bed (both literally and figuratively), now he has to sleep in it (again, literally and figuratively). His wife is hot, hot, HAWT, and what does he do? Sleep around on her with 13 (or ore) women who cannot hold a candle to her. My wife laughed out loud when she saw the kind of women that Tiger's been swinging with. None of them are nearly as beautiful as his wife.

It's sad for the wife, and for the children, but tiger is getting no pity from me. If he's stupid enough to do what he did in the first place with as beautiful a wife as he has, then he deserves both barrels (and he's getting them, too).

Everythign that Tiger is getting, Tiger deserves.

I've heard abut "stupid" before, but I've NEVER seen it. Tiger's got a hot wife like Elin Nordegren, and what does he do? Cheat with women who aren't even half as beautiful as his own wife. Kinda' reminds me of Shaniah Twain's cheating husband and his not-even-1/4th-as-beautiful-as-his-own-wife mistress. Why do these doofus celebrity guys marry smokin' hawt wives, only to cheat on `em later?

Like I said, I've heard of stupid, but I ain't never seen it `til I saw the mess Tiger's made for himself....

You know? I saw her on the cover of a fashion and beauty magazine and almost didn't recognize her (the eyes ave her away). When she isn't acting liek a ditz (such as in this photo and on many TV show) she can be a stunningly beautiful woman....

A mile wide....and an inch deep.

This is an unbelievable reason for a divorce, and I like how she said it "we 'canceled' our marriage...." as if it were a subscription to a ladies weekly.

Can't say I wouldn't do the same to any paparazzi photographer....but then again, he could have done what Namie Amuro did, and sue the magazine for tens of millions....maybe the wife would have stayed around then...
