English as the official language at a Japanese company won't last. I work for a Japanese company in the U.S. with about a third of the employees (mostly management) from Japan. Even here in the U.S., it was not possible for the Japanese staff to conduct meetings from beginning to end in English. Usually the first few opening remarks may start off in English but soon Japanese will enter into the conversation and from then on, the rest of the meeting is in Japanese with someone like myself who is bilingual summarizing for the rest of the non-Japanese staff what is being said.

Just because a person smokes weed for 20 years does not mean they are addicted. By that definition, the fact that I've been eating toast for breakfast for 20 years makes me addicted to toast. Tobacco and alcohol are much more harmful to the body and they are addictive!

Many Japanese tend to pronounce English words in terms of how it is written in Katakana. Also the use of function words and articles such as "the" or "an" is non-existant in Japanese so it is confusing to many Japanese and is often misused. I work in the U.S. in an office with many Japanese workers from Japan. One of them has lived in the U.S. for over 17 years but still can't speak English very well.

I lived in Yokohama as a child and attended the Yokohama International School. I remember going to the Matsuzakaya department store many times. It's sad to hear it's closing.
