Never heard of him so I can't really comment meaningfully but at least he's openly gay as opposed to most Japanese men who still consider it something to be ashamed of. At least that much is constructive.

Of course the money is obscene but lots of things are obscene. Advocating a maximum wage or higher taxes on the rich is akin to advocating socialism (and we don't want that, do we?).

Yeah, sounds like a great idea. I would definately work 10 hour days to get an extra day off. Good one, Utah.

Yeah, they're frigging sick, these competitions. Gigantic waste of food and worse, it's setting a bad example, that wasting food is ok.

There's a boring as hell TV program where people just eat a lot of food. It's just disturbing that this is considered normal family entertainment.

Here, here Loki520. Everyone is facing rising costs. Just buy a smaller car (or walk), use your air con less etc etc.

If sumo wrestlers get a pay rise that means ticket prices will rise and normal people pay. That's yet another cost for the average guy in the street.

We have an economic system based on oil and the oil is running out. We can't expect to be given handouts based on this for the obvious reason that handouts come from somewhere, namely ourselves, and our tax money. Everyone getting a payrise or tax break is meaningless.

This issue is not going away soon because Japanese politicians love to make it a nationalistic issue. NK is an easy target and if they fail to achieve their goals they can just blame NK even more. I'm sure if North Korea suddenly decided to give back the abductees a lot of Japanese people would be very disappointed.

    Good first post, thanks.

Everyone's personity is decided by genetics and early environment, two things we have no control over. So someone could become a Buddhist monk or a mass murderer and it would be determined by genetics/environment.

I think we need to recognise this before we execute people. If they are 'monsters' who feel the need to kill, that's genetics. If they were bullied or tortured as children, that's environment.

Having said that, we also have to protect society from these people so they can't be released. While I don't support the death penalty (it devalues life), I think all members of every society (including prisoners) should have the right to euthanasia. Maybe people facing life in prison would prefer to end their own lives rather than spend the rest of their lives incarcerated.

Is there really that much difference between Cuba and the US anyway? So Cuba has sham elections. What do you call it when there are two parties with almost identical policies and funded by the same big business groups (who will only support the parties that support big business)? Where voting for a 3rd party is throwing your vote away. There's no proportional representation or preferential voting.

Censorship? Anything that is actually newsworthy never makes the news in the US, thanks to the big media conglomorates. It's all disasters and fluff.

Repression? Can gays get married in the US? Only in California. Can blacks get houses in rich suburbs? I don't think so.

So why pick on Cuba so much? It's 1000 times better than Burma or Indonesia was under Suharto. The only problem is it is not capitalist, meaning that US businesses can't just move it, buy everything, and turn the country into a sweatshop for Nike shoes.

They also have free, universal, high quality health care!

I'm not sure the 'ethics' that kids study in school has any effect. We never did that in Australia (or religion). It's the role models who matter.

I think it's important to remember this is just one guy, one murderer.

This problem has been getting worse for ages but I think the government is going to try to fix it up a bit (discounts for fatties in the gym, higher health insurance premiums for airships etc). The anti-smoking campaigns of the 90s were very successful so maybe we can get results.

The worst thing is the fat Aussie yobbo's who seem to regard being obese and due for a massive heart attack at age 50 as some kind of joke. Wake up, you weak tools. Stop eating fast food and drinking so much beer. Eat a vegetable every now and then. The rest of us have to fund the public hospitals when you're on dialysis every day so it's not just a matter of personal choice.

Just don't eat beef, whiny losers. It's not hard to not put dead bits of cow in your mouth. Most people do it every day. If you must eat meat, eat chicken or pork (or fish) instead. I can't believe people are so spoilt and concerned about such trivialities.

None at all. I go walking late at night by myself. I don't carry weapons. I just believe Japan is a safe enough country where the chances of being attacked or killed by a stranger are so minisculy small that 'safety precautions' are unjustified.

I have handed in a wallet, a bag and 2 dogs to the police in Japan. Each time I have received a call from the owner, once offering me a cash reward.

Art is intended to make people think, which is what happened in Australia, so a success for the artist?

It's only porn if people view it as porn. Artists aren't responsible for how people view and react to their work.

Young girls are used as models, cheerleaders etc all the time. This is because they are expected to be viewed sexually. How is this better to photographing young girls? It's not, and that's why the immediate reaction to Henson's was 'porn', not 'art' because we live in a society where teenage girls are sexualised and it's considered normal.
