You've well and truly lost me there. Alcohol and drinking out here can be done DIRT CHEAP in Japan compared to Aus, UK and US. I've had nomi-hodais - yes with real beer - for less than $10 for 2 hours! The most I've ever paid for 2-3 hours of hard-core drinking in Japan has been $40. In Sydney I wouldn't even be drunk for twice that! Yes - Japanese beer in the shop can be relatively expensive - go to costco and get foreign beers for much cheaper - or instead drink dirt cheap japanese liquor like shochu!
Most things here are cheaper than back home. My accomodation is a third of what I'd pay back home - restaurants are also much cheaper.

@ tel porter- you must hang out with negative people if most are saying that - unfortunately many aussies now are like that, knocking any famous person who gets to the top. You see it everywhere - even our cricket team which has won a few games lately cops a never ending barrage of Aussie haters. In Thorpe's case, he has everything to lose and not much to gain and is having a go. True Aussie sports fanatics like me and my mates respect and support great champions and those willing to put themselves on the line. Kind of like Japanese people get behind their sportspeople and don't try and hack them down.
Thorpe - Greatest Aussie olympian ever - and who would bet against gold number 6 in the 200m relay in London - I wouldn't! Haters gonna hate - Thorpie probably doesn't give a rats...

What will the charge be? Possibly "genital mutilation" along with "abandonment of a corpse"? Anyway. rest in peace poor dude - no matter what the circumstances - each and every male JT reader crossed their legs and winced at this story, thats for sure...

I dunno Tel Porter. I think the old fellas Thorpie, Klim and Hueghill bring something to the spectacle - it gets boring just seeing teenagers win all the time. Make no mistake - Thorpie is still very very popular in his home city, Sydney. He will make the team, I have no doubts at all now, and has 5 months to get quicker. Hope Klim and Hueghill also make it to London. We need these old guys pressuring the young kiddies for their spots.

The US are too soft on pieces of human filth like Yamanuchi. Surprised this cowardly woman beater didn't use the words "regrettable" and "unfortunate" in court. Hope he meets karma in a terrible manner...

That's better Thorpie - he qualified 4th fastest for the 200 final. He will make the 200 relay team for sure - I just hope he improves more so he can swin individuals at London.

That figure is amazing - just to negotiate with Darvish and his people! Some serious money in the USA and American Baseball that the rest of us mob can't comprehend... Heck - no wonder every baseball player worth his salt in Japan is breaking his neck to get over there with the coin those Americans have!

The bottom line is their products are grossly overpriced, inefficiently produced and unwanted - unless their superior rivals are hamstrung by a 700% tax.

These old men in the DPJ - and their inefficient and unproductive agricultural sector backers who constantly hold their hands out for public funds - will die out like the dodo. Japan will be a better place for it.

MaboDoful - umm - I think you are referring to Phelps, mate. You've been on the bongs I reckon. Look, individual 100m is not Thorpie's go - never was. He will still make the top 6 for his pet 200m to make the relay team. Whether it was worth coming back just for that, I dunno. But as a fan I hope he gets faster and soon!

Simple solution: ALL fast / junk food - including conbinis, McD's, Moss Burger etc - should be taxed by governments at the rate of 500% junk food tax. I have not been to McDonalds or similar joints for 10 years, but Ive been told you can get burgers there for 100 yen. Tax 500 percent on it and I guarantee less people will be eating this junk and piling on the kilos. Let's hit the fast food outlets first and regulate them. And yeah - if you can't fit in 1 seat on a jet - pay for 2. Problem solved.

@ Blair - agree totally. Sadly, the greater populace here do not. They will have completely forgotten about the tsunami in 10 years and a bunch of ocean view developments will be going up around Kesennuma and Ishinomaki. Happenned before - will happen again. I will stick to science like you.

I'm no seismologist, but I'm getting a bit creeped out. These shakers are becoming more and more frequent here, the 7.0 here on NY and now this, and a bunch of smaller ones recently. Cell-phone warning went off again today. God knows when the next big one will be, but I'm gonna get the supplies stocked up ASAP.

Welcome to Japan, mate - it's legal here! In this case however, it's in favour of the gaijin - AMEN to that! Look it's just a promotion. Some of the ski joints up this way have some days where ladies are allowed in half-price of the guys. I've even been to a nightclub here that allowed foreigners in for free and Nihon jin had to pay entry! Discrimination yes - but an allowable and legal thing in Japan, rightly or wrongly.
