These old men in the DPJ - and their inefficient and unproductive agricultural sector backers who constantly hold their hands out for public funds - will die out like the dodo. Japan will be a better place for it.

MaboDoful - umm - I think you are referring to Phelps, mate. You've been on the bongs I reckon. Look, individual 100m is not Thorpie's go - never was. He will still make the top 6 for his pet 200m to make the relay team. Whether it was worth coming back just for that, I dunno. But as a fan I hope he gets faster and soon!

Ever met some of the kids from government schools? This bloke probably felt he needed to shoot smack every morning just to be able to face the horror of teaching them...

Simple solution: ALL fast / junk food - including conbinis, McD's, Moss Burger etc - should be taxed by governments at the rate of 500% junk food tax. I have not been to McDonalds or similar joints for 10 years, but Ive been told you can get burgers there for 100 yen. Tax 500 percent on it and I guarantee less people will be eating this junk and piling on the kilos. Let's hit the fast food outlets first and regulate them. And yeah - if you can't fit in 1 seat on a jet - pay for 2. Problem solved.

@ Blair - agree totally. Sadly, the greater populace here do not. They will have completely forgotten about the tsunami in 10 years and a bunch of ocean view developments will be going up around Kesennuma and Ishinomaki. Happenned before - will happen again. I will stick to science like you.

I'm no seismologist, but I'm getting a bit creeped out. These shakers are becoming more and more frequent here, the 7.0 here on NY and now this, and a bunch of smaller ones recently. Cell-phone warning went off again today. God knows when the next big one will be, but I'm gonna get the supplies stocked up ASAP.

    Discrimination

Welcome to Japan, mate - it's legal here! In this case however, it's in favour of the gaijin - AMEN to that! Look it's just a promotion. Some of the ski joints up this way have some days where ladies are allowed in half-price of the guys. I've even been to a nightclub here that allowed foreigners in for free and Nihon jin had to pay entry! Discrimination yes - but an allowable and legal thing in Japan, rightly or wrongly.

The only hope for the cops is if he turns himself in. I reckon he is already on his way to China.

This has the Israelis written all over it. I wonder if they stole some Aussie and British tourists passports again to illegally gain entry into Iran?

I'm sure no-one is shocked at this. Meanwhile, grub Noda is enjoying all the benefits of being the highest-paid leader of the developed world. He will never have to worry about any disaster affecting his massive salary for the next 20-30 years that he is alive.

Just guessing here but Japan and Korea may not be the best place if you're female.

I think ka-chan is spot on. I remember reading or watching a report which showed Japanese women are the most unhappy/depressed in the entire world. Why this is the case is anyones guess, but I'd imagine gender role and lowly female status in Japanese/Korean society has something to do with it.

@kochikame - I'm not so sure she is well known at all. Ask you friends not living in Japan who Homare Sawa is. I will email mine and do the same. (tell 'em not to Google) It will be interesting if any recognise her name... I wish she was known everywhere - in my mind she would slot nicely into the Japan men's team and probably show most of those guys up!

There are obviously a disproportionate amount of sad and depressed people in Japan. If you look around in stations, malls, on the street, people just don't look happy. Possibly very poor/weak family relationships, or mental health issues?

Are they counting all of the babies and toddlers who committed so called "family suicide" amongst the numbers?

@ Bebert61 - you must not have been here long - they just love this kid "Meshi" in this joint - sometimes I think he must be Japanese... As for Sawa, you won't find much about her in international press like this AP piece. Will find plenty of stories about her in Japanese media, however.

Big boo for AP for giving Sawa 2 measly lines, WTF! Messi's teammates get as much or more mention.

To be fair, GW, most people are reading this AP report overseas and are not Japanese - most have never heard of Sawa. Everyone in the world - probably even remote villagers in Papua New Guinea - know of Messi and his team-mates. Sexist it may be, but women's soccer is sadly just a tiny blip on the radar. I hope it changes as Sawa is a fantastic sportswoman and looks nice in kimono!

Lovely how Australians are taking the time to be racist to people coming into the country now, as well as the people who were there when they arrived.

@ Fugacis - Dunno which nation you are from, but I'd bet my apartment on it that your mob are far from cleanskins when it comes to race relations past and present.

"Gambaro" - she has an ethnic-sounding name herself. People in glass houses and all that...

Anyway - she is just an irrelevant conservative grub. Will never be a Minister or anyone important.

@ Ihope2eatWhales - Dude, you've been "hoping" to do that for a long time. Ever heard of a supermarket? You can get the junk there canned or sometimes in the meat section. Careful though - you may just be getting dolphin laced with mercury - the labelling laws in regards to the actual meat are extremely weak here.
