What a shock! I reckon tomorrow's headline will bring yet another massive surprise: "Elderly Man dies after falling off roof while clearing off snow."
Anyway, RIP old people.

Good health to him. I do find it amusing how the Japanese "royals" imitate the genteel waving to the public of the British "royals"! I wonder at what point in their history they started doing this? You know, the small, token wave where the hand barely moves...

Lets just hope the other terrorists turn themselves in - because there is no way the J-cops will ever catch them. I hope this germ gets life.

Good on them. I'm sure the stuffy old men in suits who run this joint are peeved that these ladies "are not following the rules" of Japanese society - but these ladies realise blindly "following rules" and not challenging the system has brought this country to it's knees, and endangered their kids.

Bit harsh there, Bebert! I lived in London 10 years ago for 2 years and never was the victim of any crime. I've been told things have deteriorated quite a bit with near total unemployment in suburbs, however I wouldn't compare the violence levels to Rio. Sure- many parts are run-down slums full of dirt-poor people and beggars - but the only violence I used to witness was in the pubs. I reckon they will do a decent job but not match the best Olympics ever - Sydney 2000.

@ Smartacus - ha ha - gotta agree! I think we all have every reason to be negative about this year however - things can't surely get worse next year. Can they? I stopped making "resolutions" years ago anyway - I used to break them all within days!

Got to agree with Dog - I'd hate to be having to do any type of business with India. Cutting through the corruption, red-tape and inefficiency would make dealing with China look like a dream! Anyway, as pointed out the trade between Japan-India will remain miniscule compared to Japan's main partner, China.

Awful year, let's all erase it from memory. Good riddance 2011, you won't be missed! 2012 will be wonderful, I'm sure!

I wonder where they captured this poor beast? I prefer watching whales in the ocean - Hawaii, NZ and Australia are good places.

Noriyosan has nailed it. There are a very few nations out there - like Japan and Australia - where you can have such freedom of speech and freedom of movement. Would people (ie Morry) prefer to live in a police state where every citizen is prohibited from expressing their sentiments? Maybe you guys just dont understand democracy and freedom like us Aussies and Japanese where we allow these freedoms.

@ Morry - You want to deport permanent residents of Japan simply because they went to a service for some tyrannical dead monarch that you and I do not like? I am glad the Japanese government is a lot more sensible and sensitive than that.

I don't agree with grieving - or even pretending to grieve - a disgusting tryannical despot who basically hated the korean people - however I respect the right of anyone who cares to do so in peace. I also hope they are doing their best at the same time to provide food for their comrades dying of starvation.

A good read. No plans myself yet - this is my first time for New Year in Japan. Would love to be drinking Aussie wine and watching the fireworks over the the most beautiful countdown view in the world - Sydney Harbour. No-matter what your plan, or where you are, as long as you have access to copious amounts of alcohol, you can't go wrong!

Not necessarily. You have to kill multiple kids, for example, to cop the death penalty. Kill a single politician, however, and you will also cop it. There is a "heirarchy" determining the punishment: Pollies up top, then businessmen...all the way down to kids at the bottom. Personally I would place kids at the top - warranting more punishment - but that's just me.

Good points tkoind2 - however why not have an exclusion on essential goods ie fruit/veges/milk/rice etc like they did when they introduced the 10% GST in Australia, to protect the poor?
