...or revise the income tax system - can't see the poll - driven politicians here having the guts to do that either.

Noda is a bumbling and uninspiring PM who will be very lucky to see out spring.. Less than mediocre, much the same as all his predecessors. I agree with him here though - where do these critics and opposition think all the extra revenue will come from? One of the only other options would be to slash tens of thousands of lazy public servants (people will jump up and down over that too) and sell off remaining government companies ie their half of Japan Tobacco.

I wonder how the families of the victims of the tortures, rapes, terrorism and murders committed by these sub-humans on death row feel about "punishment" being served?

Probably the only sensible option. I just hope the landowners are given a fair price - say 2 times the market value before the nuclear disaster. It is only fair to give them real compensation for the loss of their homes and businesses so as they can buy property elsewhere in Fukushima or Japan.

    Savages and hypocrites.

And who, pray tell, are you referring to as these so called "savages and hypocrites", Blitzpanzer? Do you have some evidence that we don't? Hmm? Or are you just jumping on the convenient blame-a-foreigner bandwagon? You do realise the overwhelming majority of attacks on public institutions in Japan are done by the Japanese, don't you?

What I was trying to say is, you're in the country with the best and healthiest food in the world, and are asking for more fast food chains to come here. Now I start to understand why some foreigners in Japan feel ashamed for their peers.

No-one is forcing Japanese to flock en-masse to the likes of McDs, KFC, Starbucks, Wendys etc. There is a strong demand, and this food seems to suit the Japanese taste, especially youngsters. They can choose to eat the old style Japanese food (but let's face it Japanese polished white rice based food aint much better) or western fast food. Capitalism and free choice at their best. Personally, I can't stand hamburgers of any kind!

Whilst I disagree with many of their ideas and views, I respect the Salvos. These three in the pic, for example, may well be reformed alcoholics - the Salvos do some great work in helping those with addiction problems and the homeless. In many cases more successfully than governments.

Uchishiba was hailed as a hero at home when he became the first Japanese to win a gold medal

In the grand scheme of things in world sport, this guy is a nothing anyway - hardly a hero. Lucked onto a medal in a minor amateur sport - big whoopee. A complete unknown outside Japan. Maybe he was lording up his fake "hero" status around these college kids?

Hope he enjoys the "judo" in the big house...

This is just awful news, as someone with Filipina friends and acquantances, I am deeply saddened. I hope there will be some volunteers collecting donations in my city soon. Best wishes to all Filpinos!

If you don't like how you are handled then just move on there is nothing that is stopping you and things are not going to change simply because you can't accept them and certainly rubbing the wrong way to the locals by saying "This should change because I do not like it."

@ SamuraiBlue - I know plenty of Japanese that simply don't have the option of "moving on" to their preferred countries ie Australia, NZ, Canada, due to having insufficient work skills/money, being too old to qualify, etc. They have every right to agitate for change in their country - just as all permanent residents do. Many, many residents in Japan - both foreign born and local - are hoping things change here and will no longer simply "accept" that things must stay the same here.

I like this PIco Iyer bloke's comment - interestingly it strikes a chord with Australians too, in how we weather our many natural disasters, especially in the bush - and how they just get on with things. However, has he been up Fukushima way? The mob up here are - quite rightly I add - increasingly voicing their anger at the rubbish hand they have been dealt by the bureaucrats, pollies and companies. I see many Japanese here throwing off this "silent, stoic" restriction they have felt culturally, and that may be a good thing if Japan is to ever rise up again.

Good luck Eddie. I guess he has had huge wads of yen thrown at him - I just hope he is able to get some regular high-level matches as he says, such as Wales, Scotland, etc. Bossing around Pacific nations' B-teams and Asian teams 80-0 is all well and good before the World Cup, but come world cup time it counts for nothing as we know. The real, chronic problem in Japan is that the very few kids remaining in this population are throwing baseballs around and kicking soccer balls - they need to get some of these teenagers playing rugby to develop a talent pool. God knows how they will...

i think must be south korean and chinese who did it.

Or maybe - just maybe - it may be the same mob who burnt down Kinkakku-ji or launched urban terrorism in Tokyo. Why do you assume Japanese do not have a possibility for attacking public places for screwed up reasons? They do. Easier to blame foreigners, I guess.

Absolutely tragic, no-matter the circumstances. We will never know why this happened, not that it matters much. Rest in Peace to them both. And thank-you JT for not translating/reporting this one - yet - as a "family suicide".

I'm glad they caught this dangerous psychopath, I didn't think they would. I would say 30 years in the Big House would be the right punishment.Let's hope his son - age unknown - also faces some serious jail time as an accomplice. Rest in Peace, poor old man.

Lest we forget these brave Canucks, Brits, Indians and Hong Kongese who fought in vain - and to those who were subsequently imprisoned and brutally tortured. It is truly regrettable that it has taken 70 years for them to receive an apology - and the fact that these blokes accepted the apology at all after that time shows they are stronger, bigger men than their oppressors ever were.

@ timtak: "Japanese mothers are role models, unlike their western sisters."

Oh no - another western guy living in Japan with an irrational grudge against western women. Including his own mother, it seems. Ladies - some of us guys respect ALL women.

BurakuminDes. How do you know he is fake? We got one standing outside ours, I know he is real as all the locals know him and which temple he is from. Part of their creed/tradition to do that.

Buddhist Priests in Japan simply do not walk around train stations and shopping districts pan-handling. It is well-known (and tolerated) that almost all those guys you see doing this are fake. Make no mistake - the church here have incredible wealth and assets - they don't pan-handle! Ask a real Buddhist Priest someday, he will tell you!
