Sorry to be pedantic Marcels - but Croats everywhere would be telling you to wash your mouth out saying Djoko is one of them. He's a Serb. I agree with you though - monumental task for Japan - rest assured all the Croats will all be 2 metre tall monster servers!

You've been lucky cleo. As a fellow blue-eyed whitey, I've been here for 7 years and been asked for ID in a few situations - waiting on the Narita Express platform to go back to Tokyo; walking from my apartment to the gym (1 minute walk); riding from the conbini at night. Not saying it stressed me out too much (except for the gym one when I did not have gaijin card) but it is interesting that in 9 years my Chinese lady friend has never been asked once on the street! It certainly does not worry me too much - just makes me curious!

I got stung being asked for ID on the Narita Express platform a few years ago. Are you sure whitey does NOT have to show it? Meanwhile, my lovely Chinese friend tells me she has never once been asked for ID in 9 years here in Japan...

A buddy of mine used to turn this around on the locals. He'd ask "Can you use a fork/spoon?" and look on in wide-eyed amazement when they said they were able to. Kinda freaked them out a little, and one or two got the irony! Turning around generalisations can sometimes be effective.

Methinks this will be further fodder for the right-wingers like Ishihara who wish to re-arm and expand Japanese Military - nukes included - and close down as many US bases as they can.
Personally, I'm more concerned about the present and real risks of nuclear reactors and man-made disasters harming the citizens here than the remote possibility of being hit by falling debris!

@ Cos - are you implying that the Shiraishi siblings/married couple are Zainichi? Links?

Fair point Cleo - the slave labour business here was in existence for about 5 or 6 years - but not 300 like elsewhere. Mob violence against foreigners - 1923(?) Great Kanto jishin has plenty of evidence of that. Anyway, I think we are on the same page in abhorring racism and racist attacks on anyone, period. All nations of the world have sad histories of violence against ethnic minorities within and outside of their borders - and I for one hope the authorities come down on these present thugs like a tonne of bricks.

Are you seriously assuming that this stuff did not/does not happen here? Really? History sadly suggests otherwise.

Racist, cowardly thugs. I truly hope they rot in jail forever. It appears that two of the street gang members - the Shiroishi filth - are either a brother/sister or a young married couple too, which makes this even more sick in some ways. May this poor Nepalese man rest in peace.

Controversy aside, there are some very nice photos of Makiyo online. She sure is a healthy looking girl... however beating and kicking a taxi driver to within an inch of his life is not cool. It may be OK to not wear seat-belts in Japan - but you HAVE TO in most foreign countries, Makiyo.

The reality is no-one will purchase a loss-making operation, this is a publicity stunt. Having said that - I cannot blame Mitsubishi for pulling out of manufacturing in the likes of Holland and Australia - they can make these cars much, much cheaper in SE Asia, China or India. It is a cruel blow for the Dutch industry - who also recently buried the old SAAB company they had taken over.

Give me a break. I'm shelling out a couple thousand bucks for a flight (economy) and this JAL mob wont give me a 200 yen chocolate? No wonder they are effectively bankrupt had to be saved by us taxpayers when they treat their customers like this!
