Maybe some of that is true - but they still don't seem to fall out of the sky like other airlines. Their safety is famous: No fatalities due to crashes yet - and QANTAS is the 2nd oldest commercial airline in the world. I think the concern is keeping this safety record - Xenophon and others are concerned that outsourcing into Asia could jeopardise safety.
Personally - QANTAS is too expensive for me - maybe outsourcing their base into cheaper Asia may make it affordable?

Suicide is an epidemic in Japan, as are mental health issues - but I'm just not entirely convinced this new program is the best way to address these problems. At least it does have people talking though - and admitting that Japan has an enormous problem.

I really feel for the workers. But the writing was on the wall. Mitsubishi pulled up stumps in Australia a couple of years ago for the same reason: it is waaay to expensive to build non-luxury cars in super expensive nations like Aus and Holland. I mean, they could pay workers in SE Asia probably 10 percent of the wage to do the same work.

I'm not sure if this a contest with "winners" , tmarie. I was just highlighting the innacuracy of a statement made by another poster that Japanese ladies are "not interested in Chinese men" - when the evidence and statistics are very clear that they are. Chinese spouses are the most common foreign-born spouses for Japanese men and women.

@ Anglootaku - Considering the foreign groom of choice for Japanese women is Chinese men - and increasing year-to-year - I think there may just be a little truth in it. Maybe your friends seem to be Anti-Chinese - but overall Japanese are not when it comes to choosing Chinese marriage partners.

I like the old lady - congrats to her - but her position should be up for election every 4 years.

Because apparently they are the "good guys" and can be trusted with them like we can trust the Americans, Brits, Russians, French, Indians etc.

I agree Greek people are dirt-poor - and can not afford the luxury of visiting Japan - but gotta agree with LoveNot too - they are all very charming - especially the ladies IMO.

Is he the SMAP member with the hair-replacement? At one stage a couple of them were thinning on top and all of a sudden they appear on TV with thick manes of hair! What's doing?

Good luck to Dr.Shibata and his colleagues. Silicon Valley is where the roads are lined with gold for those savvy in IT. It is a haven also for Aussies who have moved there to become filthy rich like Dr.Shibata. I admit I'm jealous! Who wouldn't dream of retiring at 35 to eat caviar and drink Champagne every day, have a chauffeur drive you in your Rolls Royce and choose to go anywhere in the world in 5-star luxury on a whim? Working is for the lackeys like all of us!

@ Nicky Washida - Awesome story - loved it! This should be an example for all guys here many of whom gave up the willingness to find a partner long ago in favour of online games and manga. Good on Mr.Washida for having the bottle to go and do that - it worked out well in the end!

Japanese guys are just too shy, introverted and bashful. End of story. I have guys in my university classes outnumbered 10-1 by gorgeous girls - yet they are petrified to even look at them, let alone approach them . Maybe the salarymen are very confident with the ladies, I don't know. The future is not looking good here in terms of there being any babies produced! Come on down, you Chinese fellas, and be productive!

Unfortunate name
Let's not forget the most common Asian confed. players in Europe, by far: that Aussie mob. It's a shame Williams' deal fell through - but he may just get a chance next season if Boro do go up.

Fantastic story! Being a cricket tragic, I am always keen to extoll the virtues of the great game of cricket to the Japanese. We have had a few games up here in Tohoku over the years - mostly Indians, Pakistanis and us Aussies/Kiwis/Brits. What has impressed me though has been the quality of the Japanese guys who have turned out. Some of them are naturals: I'm not ashamed to admit I was clean bowled by a Japanese guy after opening the batting. I made just 2 runs that day. Some baseball skills they have are definitely transferrable to cricket, and this guys sure did show that!
As the article says - cricket is number 2 in terms of popularity in the world after soccer - and that is only going to grow. If we can get even a small slice of the Japanese market cricket could become a viable minor sport here!

You really would have hoped after the last terrorist attacks here - albeit with a different type of fatal substance - that authorities would have tightened security of highly dangerous, concentrated substances. The mind boggles as to what type of group/cult may have got their hands on this gear.

I have no problem with those areas - or indeed the sealed Smoking booths on JR platforms. JR have done the right thing and banned smoking on trains since I came here - AMEN to that. C'mon Genji - it is only a matter of time before smoking in bars, restaurants and cafe's goes the way of the dinosaur like in Aus and the UK. Thankfully then kids everywhere will be happier, healthier and breathe much easier.

It sounds like "artistic gymnastics" - whatever that may be - is extremely poorly run if a so called World Cup can be cancelled with just 2 months notice!

Hey Onniyama! Yep - still here. Shuffling between Fuk. and Yamagata. My apartment in Fuk. city is in one of the many hot spots - well above the average of 0.9 reading in this city. I know of many families with kids that have voluntarily evacuated this city - to places such as Nagano, Yamagata and even Okinawa. The problem with "cleaning" the surface radiation is that the hot spots are like a patchwork quilt all over the region. One area may have normal levels and 100m away there is an area with readings through the roof!
