Well done Vegalta Sendai - you have given a boost to the people of Tohoku!

The government is also considering euthanizing dying animals, but only after getting permission from their owners, said Yutaka Kashimura, an agricultural official in Fukushima.

Permission shouldnt be needed. Euthanise them - any farmer who does not agree and wants his animals to continue suffering should either a/ return to the zone to feed and take care of them or b/ be charged with animal abuse. (however this is possibly not a crime in Japan?)

The irony of your post is obviously lost on you.

Not at all. Just fed up with people who are always on the attack - even in a humanitarian situation like this they will find a way to insult people.

I must be old-fashioned and conservative.

Seesaw - Yes. Probably very old too.

On the face of it she may be showing concern. However, Japan has been hit under the belt, so using this opportunity, the PM (her entourage) will push for an open economic Trade agreement for the Pacific in this visit. Let the game of chess begin!

123chachacha - what a negative comment from a negative poster.

Wow - lots of religious (American) conservatives on here. Yes - it is possible to have a female leader. Yes - it is possible for leaders not to be married.

Some of my best friends in Australia, those with the most solid relationships, are not married. Been together for almost 20 years some of them. Good luck to Julia - a PM shaking up the conservatives and their traditional, boring "family values". All power to her! Proud to have her as my PM.

Cleo and Yubaru - as an animal lover myself, that would be a perfect solution. However, this is Japan, and we all know they WONT be released/cared for. The residents are not allowed to pick up their pets. These animals are all going to die - unless you guys want to risk arrest by breaking in and feeding them? I'm afraid the ONLY humane solution is to shoot them all to prevent suffering.

No one really cares about the intelligence/cuteness etc. of these pets in these grime times. People discussing their qualities and merits here are wasting their time. They are ALL going to die a slow and very painful death - and the one in the photo is already suffering.

Do the humane thing Japan - like the Russians did - send in the troops and shoot them all before they die in agony. I am certain everyone agrees.

About 3,400 cows, 31,000 pigs and 630,000 chickens were left in the zone, according to government figures, though most were assumed to have died by now.

Whether they have died of radiation poisoning - or more likely of starvation and lack of water - it was an awful way to go. The Russians at least sent the troops in to shoot all the animals and pets in their 30km Chernobyl zone. It would have been humane if the Self-Defence Forces did the same here.

There is a possibility - I admit a small one - that a super-wealthy American X-Japan fan has snapped up the piano. I hope it's true - that cash would be a real shot in the arm for the Tohoku relief campaign.

I did not even think of this happening, as it does not happen much in Japan in general.

    Are you serious?

Yep, I am Koriyamaboy, and still all the evacuees here - to the best of my knowledge - are staying in gymnasiums, public centres and schools. Plenty of vacant hotels and ryokans up here, let me tell you, in fact most of them have been pretty vacant for years!

Umm, how about somewhere not on a cold hard floor and without cardboard separating the next person? Look, it was necessary to have these makeshift shelters for a short time, they have been very important - but not for months. The hotels, ryokans, vacant houses in other prefectures etc are there, empty and available. Some of these people can't move back into their houses for 9 months minimum - likely much more. Let's all hope the red-tape is expediated and they can be put into accomodation ASAP.

You are right, koriyamaboy. It's the same up in Fukushima city. It seems the government is either a/ too stingy to pay for decent accomodation or b/ doing the usual red-tape shenanigans that mean 1000 people have to approve and sign off on relocation for these victims. So sad.

This cowardly rapist and murderer deserves nothing less than execution. Let's finish it off soon.

I don't understand why only "SOME" of his victims, some out of 116?, did not report to police and this guy could stay free to rape for 16 years?

It is well-known most women in Western countries who are raped don't report it - and I'd imagine in a joint like China almost no women do. It is highly likely this monster DID rape even more than these 116 children and women. No-one will shed a tear when he takes his last miserable breath.

Good on him! He has just replaced another old fella as the oldest man, an American who only died 5 days ago - also 114. He looks quite spritely for his age, too!
