Sorry - individuals and cultures MUST adapt to the social norms accepted in the society. Are you saying that it is acceptable for women who come from a culture where bare breasts in public is acceptable, to walk around freely in Tokyo for example? Should we all just accept their decision to go topless? (Not that I'd complain mind you - but others possibly would!)

Respect to the French and their government. I don't really care about what these types of people want to wear - but there is NO WAY they should be allowed to wear full coverage, head-to-toe, in public buildings, supermarkets, banks, trains or buses etc. Can I stroll into my local bank and conduct business in a balaclava or a full-face helmet? Of course not, that would be absurd. Let them stay at home if they insist on wearing this stuff.

Good on him! Let's hope the bid gets up to at least 100 Million yen - if the funds can help the Red Cross buy some medical supplies, food, temporary shelter etc for some of the victims up in Tohoku, it is well worthwhile.

Oh, the poor dear may have to go back to hospital again with "stress-related illness". We're crying for you, old Masataka, and so are all of the Fukushima evacuees like Otsuka-san and Matsueda-san.

Good luck to them! These kids are doing their family proud. If I was around there I'd pop in and buy some stuff - and maybe even use the toilet!

As I have previously stated, I would be peeved if that happened - without any notification, etc. But I am certain flexibility will be shown in many cases - I don't anticipate a flood of newbies coming in to replace those who did leave. I am also certain the situation won't affect friendships between people who stayed and those who left.

jobseeker - the amount of salt in these is pretty high my friend - I'm not sure eating them every day for 10 years is the wisest thing to do! When I first came to Japan, times were tough and I lived on these, gotta say my health was not thankful after a few months of that...

Maybe down in Tokyo companies will be more strict towards giving employment to returning evacuees. I can understand companies would be peeved if individuals just upped and left with zero notice. But up here in Tohoku (Fukushima at least) all those people I know of who left WILL be going back into their previous jobs - hopefully soon! They and their families will be warmly welcomed back by us. We are working hard towards getting things going again, rather than bearing grudges and bitterness towards friends.

Not all foreigners live in Tokyo - I sure as heck never would. My friends that evacuated all left from the Fukushima area - within 50-60km of Dai-ichi. I can assure everyone - foreign or Japanese - that no-one would want to call them "fly-jin" in front of me. The people who use the term are only game enough to do so online.
Richard III sums it up perfectly:
My thoughts exactly!

There have been some amazing photos and footage of the tsunami. Many up on youtube. Quite a lot of people basically threw caution to the wind in the hopes of getting that "money shot" - not just pros but also amateurs. Sometimes obsession with photography and video can be life-endangering...but we at least have the most awesome footage of tsunami probably in history... Anyway, Im glad this bloke survived!

It's almost too painful to look at this - most of these people (and kids) are no longer with us. I guess it serves as a warning for the future, but most people will be too shattered to look.

Umm...PM and Emperor dont live in Fukushima, last time I checked. Tokyo is not in danger - other places close to the reactor (potentially) are.
I don't know if you can put your faith in TEPCO, they have a shocking record of cover ups as has been well-documented. Can you be sure that they have turned over a new leaf now?
