Many senior Japanese politicians often make public remarks like this, 'rah rah Japan'-type stuff claiming Japanese cultural and moral superiority, and hinting at what the world could/should learn from Japan. What they could probably do with realizing however, is that the world really doesn't care about Japan, and doesn't think about Japan. Sure, lots of people drive a Toyota or a Honda, some even eat sushi- but to many people, Japan is just 'that city in China where you can buy a little girl's dirty undies out of a vending machine'. Save it, Japanese politicians- nobody is listening, save for a handful of Japanese people and foreign expats in Japan. When I lived in Japan, I was eagerly asked left and right: "What do Americans think about Japan?!?" I usually gave some sort of malarkey answer, made up on the spot, to tell them what they wanted to hear and change the subject. But nearer the end of my tour, I just told them the truth: "They don't."

If you were married to someone who brings home tens of millions of dollars because of what he can do with his hands, you'd probably take over the vegetable slicing, too.

While I'm not strongly against whaling, I'm tired of hearing this cop-out that "it's only at a few upscale restaurants". Horse crap. You can get a plate of whale at any izakaya for $5 bucks.

What is it about the other 31 cases he's so embarrassed to admit to?

As a passenger riding with a driver who's been drinking, your only responsibility is to reach into the cooler in the back seat and get him a fresh beer so he can keep his eyes on the road.

I've never been much for conspiracy theories, but I've long suspected that the current administration doesn't want to catch Bin Laden (though perhaps they do now in their final so as to leave at least something positive for the history books). The average American seems to believe that 9/11 was all Bin Laden's doing and that he IS Al Qaeda. Catch him, and the base of the administration's support for the War on Terror would likely say "Alright, we got 'im! War's over, bring 'em home."

I think I'd have an easier time taking Japan and it's whaling activities seriously if they just came out and said "Look, we hunt whales because we like to eat them. Now buzz off." The whole 'research' thing just seems so lame, as it's such an obvious cop-out. Right up there with back in the '80s when "Rossignol can't sell skis in Japan because Japanese snow is unique and different." Gimme a break...

Sounds like someone has formed pretty strong opinions on something despite a complete lack of experience with it. Kind of sounds like someone doesn't know what the hell he's talking about...

Like it or not, Japan generally follows American social movements with some delay. 'Sexual harassment' and 'no smoking section' were unheard of in Japan until they started catching on to moves America was making ten years earlier or so. America still has a long way to go in decriminalizing marijuana, but once a few more states go the way Massachusetts just did in the recent election (65% of voters in favor of making possession a civil matter with a simple fine and no arrest/criminal record) I think you'll see a change in Japan. At least they'll perhaps stop treating marijuana as if it's right up there with heroine as they do now. Also, the more tax-paying Japanese parents out there of otherwise good kids who get caught with gasp a whole gram of bud and have their lives ruined should give clout to a movement to discontinue treating simple possession cases as if they were Colombian drug lords or ax murderers.
