DoctorTofu, regardless of what you think, there are a lot of people who do have a crippling fear of being around others. I'm not saying that all shy people have the disorder, but if you recognize that even "a very (VERY) small percentage of people might actually suffer from it", then it is pretty insensitive to equate "but being too shy to actually endure being looked at" with being pathetic.

Insensitive much, DoctorTofu? Social anxiety disorder is nothing to scoff at. Now, in case you've forgotten some of what you learned in med school, "generalized social anxiety disorder typically involves a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being judged by others and of potentially being embarrassed or humiliated by one's own actions. These fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny by others." It's pretty legit.
