The bigger tragedy is the fact that americans will smugly deny any thought or attempt to ban or reduce guns.

Still arrogantly clinging to the primitive idea that guns don't kill people, but people do. blah blah

America is an embarrassment to the human race

"The Hattoris circulated a petition calling for more stringent controls on firearms and collected 1.7 million signatures from Americans."

While i agree with their desire/motivation it will never happen. America is a land full of cowards encased in a THICK layer of bravado to compensate. Taking away guns from them is like taking away rice from asians.

An astonishing and vulgar display of american 'moral' arrogance on display.

It is widely believed among scientists that human development came about faster because of the ingestion of psychedelics.

Indeed the people who lived in the Amazon forests for the past 1000 years gave, when asked how they knew which plants to each and which would be cures, credit to their tribe shaman who ingested powerful psychedelics to help them survive in one of the harshest and unforgivable places on earth.

The world has to put a stop to america's perverted overuse of christian morality.

I don't know what the "sakura channel" is. Someone posted a comment about how Koreans copy a lot of things. I remembered when a Korean friend was visiting and told me that kappa ebisen was a rip-off of a Korean snack. I believed at the time but then later discovered that it was the other way around. I did a google search of "kappa ebisen pakuri" and that's what came up. Sorry if it was right wing crap. I only looked at the pictures. Should've checked the writing.

I have encountered similar korean ignorance with, of all things, music. In this case i was in korea and i played a Kraftwerk tune to some people which was recorded in the late 1970's. Right away the koreans in ear shot of the song claimed that whoever i was playing on the cd player had ripped off a korean artist who apparently had the exact beat/melody riff. I showed them the CD recording date and they fell silent. Track was from Kraftwerk's Die mensch Maschine album.

This article could really use an audio file!

They do even better by providing a link at the end of the article to where the whole project, plus audio, is located. If only people weren't so lazy.

More countries should stand up and nail Europeans to the wall.

Failing indebted economies (except germany) threatening to bring the rest of the world. Rampant open mass racism, which is the point of the article, that doesn't appear to show up anywhere else in the world except europe.

Anyone see the street brawls between russia and poland? This is used to be the exclusive domain of british hooligans fighting, mostly, german fans. I guess fighting over sport is just too much fun for these people.

Under the veneer of supposed "high society" punctuated by romantic castles, ornate churches and privileged aristocratic projections lies a harsh ugly shadow that europeans can't or refuse to see, but the rest of world totally can.

No, cars in themselves are not necesarily advanced manufacturing as you correctly identified with your comparison between the two types. The ones that get from a to b are the ones which China make. Give your head a shake.

Sigh i realize now why JT posters no longer debate with you since you just go in circles with your arguments. Again I pointed out that china, with full support of the government, is copying wholesale the top vehicle manufacturers in the world in a bid to become a premier "exporting" vehicle manufacturer.

No, not wrong, Germany's 'prestige' is based on design and cache, Japan's on reliabilty. Hyundai's rise hasn't changed this. That was my original point. And yes, for many people, a car's reliabiltiy is more important that how it looks.

BS, have you driven a Porsche? BMW? Have you driven an M5, or any of the M cars? Clearly you don't know what you're talking about. The german car companies earned their 'prestige' through style, handling and other performance characteristics and NOT simply by design and 'cache'. They still dominate the luxury/performance category, in fact they are the benchmark to which all others are compared.

Japan hasn't lost more and more manufacturing, there has been competition with Korea in the OLED stakes, but Japan is also pursuing OLED again.

Yes they have that was the point of the OLED article, they were admitting japan was slipping in their ability to complete against their rivals. They admitted they were giving up OLED development. As for them pursuing it again? what? Where did that come from? The OLED article was from January.

    Cars are NOT advanced manufacturing.

BS. There are cars that are just good enough to go from a to b and there are cars that have technological marvels that lead the industry and rely heavily on the advanced technology you cling to. Give your head a shake.

German cars are renowned for prestige, Japanese ones for reliabilty.

Wrong, german cars are known for their style, performance and handling. "Prestige" can be applied to the japanese cars as well, certainly those who value "reliability" reports over stye and performance.

That was about LED. Japan still makes the technology required by these companies, both Korean and Japanese, to produce this LED. And again, TVs are commodified goods. You don't seem to know the difference, lol. TVs are not advanced manufacturing.

Wrong! It was OLED and NOT LED, massive difference! But i enjoy seeing how you are selective about which technology is "advanced" and which isn't to suite your arguments. Again TVs are advanced manufacturing since they rely on the technologies you cling to in that article.

oginome do you understand that producing products like OLED tvs are what drives "advanced manufacturing"? Apparently not since i just had to explain it to you. If japan loses more and more manufacturing then there is nothing to DRIVE improvements in their "advanced manufacturing". Get it? The two go hand in hand...you can't have one without the other for very long.

oginome you still don't seem to understand. You always go on and on about "advanced manufacturing" but never seem to identify what that is. Tools for manufacturing? Your arguments are too vague.

What you don't seem to understand is that Japan is certainly not listlessly and apathetically standing by like you think it is.

lol, tell me aginome where did i use the words "Listless" and "apathetic" to describe japan? Tell me? Your delusional mind seems to conjure up conversations that never happened.

Remember there was that japan today article in january that quoted a japanese guy saying japan has lost its edge in advanced manufacturing of TVs. It would seem that some japanese people, in high places, are admitting to their edge slipping despite their investment in R&D.

Let's consider "advanced manufacturing" in the form of cars....do a google search for china copying cars. You will find lots of articles like this one: http://gemssty.com/2006/10/29/top-10-copycat-cars/

..that shows how china is very serious about being a manufacturing powerhouse. BMW sued a car poducer in china and LOST..do you know why? The chinese government felt it was ok for chinese companies to rip off other non-chinese manufacturers wholesale and not be sued for it. The chinese government said they want to become independent of foreign products and have their own solid manufacturing base that, surprise surprise, will become a major exporter.

Yes seeing those copy cat cars is laughable and entertaining, but remember where korea was just 20 years ago, the laughing stock of the automotive world only to now start to eclipse japanese cars. If china holds steadfast to their goals they will achieve it.

Everyone knows that producing vehicles involves engineering of damn near every discipline: electrical, mechanical, materials, safety etc etc... You seem to think that japan is invincible to losing it's "advanced manufacturing" to any sort of challenge from other countries. But here we have a clear example of how china is trying to become a major player in "advanced manufacturing" by ripping off their rivals...all with government support and protection.

I am certainly not wishing for japan to 'lose', the last thing i want is to be in japan with high unemployment and an eroded self esteem. But the point is china has FAR more people resources and desire to dominate in the area you so, falsely, hold dear.

Despite the reliability issues of BMW and MB they still have, in the case of BMW anyway, three things over their japanese rivals. Vehicle looks and handling/performance. Handling/performance is what gave BMW their reputation and believe it or not they still have managed to maintain that for most models, and if they don't they have the kind of styling people are willing to pay for.

I don't how many times i have read or seen reviews of japanese luxury cars, particularly lexus, where the reviewer rails against how boring and conservative the styling is or how average the performance/handling is.

As for your comments about electronics, well, you're spot on. Consumer electronics has always been the pride and joy of those who can manufacture it the cheapest. Most western countries had to face this at some point, letting go of manufacturing "commodity" tech and focus on higher end goods. Some countries, like england, thought it would be wise to be a mostly service economy (i.e. banking and real estate etc) but that's for another thread.

The point is Japan will lose most of its cheap to medium valued electronics manufacturing that's just a given. I know oginome is always defending japan over their "advanced manufacturing" but what he doesn't seem to realize is that it too will be copied and improved upon by other countries far more hungry and desperate than japan is today.

Author is obviously young and inexperienced. He is correct in the obvious message of "why move to japan (or anywhere) if you don't want to assimilate". Well that happens to many asians, especially Japanese, when they are abroad. They Cluster together and refuse to change or assimilate. It's usually the second or third generations offspring that start to integrate.

Also Peter you have to keep in mind that no matter how good you speak japanese and how much you 'assimilate' or how much you rub up against the leg of your japanese friends/cowokers...just remember you will NEVER be viewed as japanese. You will always be seen as a foreigner, hence why many foreigners rarely try going 'all the way'.

Most of the world's supply of available rare earth today comes from China, price fixing or no. The fact that they have such a large supply of it is an environmental advantage and it's a completely different situation from Japan gaining dominance and monopolies in advanced manufacturing.

What you dont seem to understand is that the chinese have the resources the desire AND the brain power to topple japan. People are attacking your comments because your arguments clearly state that japan can do no wrong and cannot fail because no one else can match them. But you conveniently seem to forget countries like Germany, israel and the USA who produce high precision equipment for all sorts of industries. Ill let you think about those industries i am refering to before I post them.

But seriously you use the feeble argument that the korean`s have to rely on japanese tech in order to produce their own products, that might have been true in the past but if you read the article the koreans are now the only country pursuing OLED with the japanese ADMITTING they cannot compete because their yields are crap and are bowing out.

Except I really don't, I'm not even Japanese. When did I even claim Japan was a paradise? I criticise it like everyone else, but people's comments on the manufacturing industry dying are wrong. Nice attempt at psychoanalysis though, but a big failure unfortunately

Not really, you are the only one whos posts are clearly not grounded with facts and are delusional. Only you dont see it and instead continue to spout more mindless banter with nothing to back it up. So yeah my original assessment of your insecurities still stands.

China's dominance in rare earth metals is not the result of skill, but luck, for that fact that most of the earths are found in China.

Not true. It is by cunning market moves that china has come to dominate the rare earths sector. By originally offering rare earths at cheaper prices that lead to mines being shut down all over the world such as in Australia, US, Canada and places in africa. Make no mistake those countries will have rare earths available when china exhausts hers, but it did not come about by "luck".

oginome It is clear you are extremely insecure and you seem to tie your own self worth to that of japan`s perceived tech prowess. Despite mouting evidence you still desperately need to argue in favour of japan being some super awesome "high tech" paradise that can never fail, or be touched by anyone on the planet."

The government has adopted a plan for 300,000 exchange students to come to Japan to study. As this plan moves forward, efforts should be made to increase the number of foreign students who find employment in Japan’s creative content industries. The goal would be to send out into the world foreigners who through cultural exchange have developed a good understanding and appreciation for Japan.

Dumb. This suggestion is out of date. What you're really saying is "we need to hire foreigners, indoctrinate them to our culture and sales tactics and then send them back to their own countries to extol the "awesomeness" of japanese culture.". Drone alert!

The only real creative thing in japan is the porn. First class and innovative. There are few bands that are good - Fujifabric being one of them - but the lead singer is dead and they disbanded.

I suppose i can see why there would be a push for selling 'kawaii' culture because it is unique to japan. Few, if any, countries exploit young girls quite like japan does. You'd have to some how mitigate the 'paedophile ' image in order for it to be successful.

Perhaps you can up the output of the high quality green tea that never gets exported, instead all the rancid crap gets sold abroad. That's something that is unique to japan and could perhaps build an image/brand around.

The article also talks about korea being successful, in asia perhaps, but the rest of the world? Maybe what Yoshito Hori is saying is that japan needs to really penetrate the massive chinese market by telling them japan is "cool", and if successful, can sell more hardware products to them...because if japan isn't too careful chinese culture could become "cool" and with it all the tech clones will be selling their wares en masse in japan.
