timeborder- Isn't it curious that the most powerful country in the world, the United States, has nutjobs who still cower at the thought of some sort of takeover in the middle of the night. By whom and for what reason no one seems to know...

I would classify the nut job as the one who jumps the gun. But to say it just could not happen? Yeah, the Germans thought so too. The French thought they were safe from kings, and then came Emperor Napoleon. The Italians probably also thought everything would be just fine when they went for Mussolini's "Third Way". It seems like a good idea even now, the only difference is that we have clear hindsight on old Ben.

This congressman's error was not in keeping his eyes open to the possibilities. It was opening his mouth and saying "Hitler and Stalin" before he had anything near sufficient proof. I would keep my mouth shut if they already had not been mentioned.

But, still, I think the writers of this piece sold him down the river a little too much. Be careful to note what is and what is not a quote. The most extreme parts are most certainly NOT quotes. They are "artistic license", and a shame.

I said military spending is a fraction of what the country spends on social welfare programs. I never said military spending is a social welfare program. What a sorry rant on your part. Fail!

Yes, you were misunderstood Helter. But you also failed to provide essential evidence for your earlier statements. I say again, FAILED.

“When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.”

Well, that would not be Marxism. Marx would not approve I think.

“That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did,”

I am not as knowledgeable about Stalin, but Hitler's violent minions were well organized and violent long before he was elected chancellor. Its too late to create a personal force loyal to Obama's every whim now, much too late. You cannot just piece a force together at random and get anything remotely resembling what Hitler had.

But I think some mild skepticism is due with a proposal like this, but for Pete's sake, this is from a speech and details are few. Bringing up Hitler and Stalin at this point is WAY out there, and smacks of being a sore loser. A congressman really should know better.

When we get the details, that will be the time to bring up the dangers. Not just Obama, but whoever follows Obama must also be considered.

Japan needs to cycle some of these perverts through California's prison system so they can learn the hard way to respect personal boundaries.

Actually, I think respect is their problem. If they acted a little more like the womanizers who truly have no respect for women, they could get past those personal boundaries with some measure of permission, and would not need to resort to this bottom scraping. Such as it is, they respect women so much they cannot even bring themselves to talk to one sensibly.

They need to be taught to have "game", a class that is sorely needed in Japan.

Please tell me how much is spent on social programs VS department of defense costs?

I second this request. Anyone with such a strong opinion on simple numbers MUST have a source.

And here is a source for your viewing pleasure:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listofcountriesbymilitary_expenditures

According to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute figures the U.S. spends 547 BILLION dollars on the military, 45 percent of the WORLD TOTAL, while number 2, Britain, spends only 60 billion, just 5 percent of the world total, and even dreaded China is about the same as Britian. Naturally the rest spend even less.

I think somebody needs to tell the U.S. that the Cold War is over.

A large pearl inlaid in gold with two drop pieces, each with an emerald and pearl set in gold.

Cool! I have been looking for it everywhere! When can I pick it up?

All these platitudes will never cover for the fact that America is light years ahead of other nations especially Europe in this case.

Light years ahead? That is quite a statement about a nation that looked on nearly all blacks as slaves 150 years ago and had aparteid up until 40 years ago, a history the Europeans do not share. The Europeans might be slow as molasses, but the situation there has changed drastically in the past few decades. We Americans have just been adjusting a situation that is very old. We have had it easy. So don't toot that horn so loudly please. Pride cometh before a fall. --Cirroc

how far European countries with big minority populations have to go getting nonwhites into positions of power.

There should be no such push to get minorities in power. The only push should be to stop blocking them. Then let things take its course. --Cirroc

Anti-Semitism and racism are a threat to our basic values

Too simplistic. Its not so much if one is racist or anti-semitic or not, its what one does with those feelings. Violence based on those feelings is the height of stupidity.

There are reasons to be against the Jewish religion. However, there are no reasons to be violent or discriminatory against a Jew just because he is a Jew.

But all this talk against anti-semitism has gone so far that if a Jew punched me, I would wonder if I would get accused of anti-Semitism if I punched him back. No you say?

Well, I have been accused for opposing Israel. Any little criticism of Israel, and the accusation often comes out. Offer any support for Iran, even those rare times when they are in the right, and it might come out. Point out a man like Paul Wolfawitz and his hawkishness on the M.E., and you might get accused of it.

While not all Jews are rich, or even good with money, a disproportionate amount do seem to be. But that does make his faith a problem. It is not at all necessary to even bring that up when being critical of a rich man. Scumbag greedy rich men come in all colors and all faiths.

But throw a rock in the dirt poor post-war Germany of the 1930s that never enjoyed the 1920's like others did and hit an expensive crystal glass store front, and odds are good that the owner was Jewish. But, again, no one should care about his faith, and certainly no poor Jew should ever be confused with a rich one. Had the people not made an issue of their Jewishness and not murdered but just robbed them and rich Christians alike, Kristallnacht would be justified in many minds even now.

But that is not what they did. They were stupid and horrible people that attacked based on faith. They let things get twisted in their minds. I think thing are just twisted the other direction now, and that is a danger of a different kind.

Funny how people are so quick to defend drilling for oil in protected areas, but so slow to even bring up changing their gas guzzling ways.

Any of you out there ever heard of public transportation??? Trolleys used to be very common even in small towns in America. That was until the oil, rubber, and car companies bought and dismantled them so people would buy more of their products. Bring back the public transportation. That will help loads.

Next, ban things like Humvees unless people have like 8 kids to bus around. Somebody is going to whine about freedom when I say that. But in the next breath, from the driver's seat of their Humvee no less, they will tell us how foreign oil supports oppressive regimes! No, its more like Humvee drivers support oppressive regimes. We might need our oil even worse someday, and that is part of the reason why we are keeping it. So don't bother with the assertion that we could be oil independent. Just deal with the here and now and stop wasting gas. Find some other way to pad your fragile ego rather than a big car.

Well, I got a few people in my family who love to sit down with you and listen to how you explain this to them and why didn't they get all these great things you say Castro is supposed give out.

Build a strawman like that and people start to think it was their own idea. It wasn't. Precious few have any love for Castro. Plus we have no choice but to accept all the things you say about yourselves because we have no proof either way.

Castro and his brother are simple realities. You have to deal with reality. If you do not, I guarantee a man like Castro will get power and men just like him will replace him.

The more contact we have with Cuba the better. We may have to go through men like Castro, even politely, to do that. Suck in your pride and stow your ideas of quick vengeance. When one course does not work, try another. What have you got to lose? Look to the future rather than the past. But if you want to live in the past, Obama and everyone else is going to leave you behind. Your choice.

    The problem is government SPENDING.

Amen to that realization Sarge. I wonder if anyone paused long enough while disagreeing with you on everything else to realize you are essentially right about that.

But I would say it is now not only spending, but what we spent that we did not have. We are deep in debt, and budget cuts are not going to work unless you suggest shutting down the government for something on the order of like ten years. But that won't work as America will collapse in the meantime.

Taxes must go up, especially on the rich. Spending must go down, oh yeah. Even burning those candles at both ends will not get us out of the mess soon. And in the meantime we also have to maintain confidence in our financial stability or it just gets worse. --Cirroc

Change comes through dialogue and understanding at the grassroots level; not from threats, sanctions, and/or war.

Actually, all have an impact. You just have to know which one to use when. But obviously our stance toward Cuba has not accomplished anything of value besides keeping Soviet missles out, but that was 40 years ago! --Cirroc

The father is obviously not the vengeful sort and is probably therefore actually using that grey matter God gave him.

I take that back. Maybe he is the vengeful sort. Maybe he wants them alive and suffering. Oh well, if one is going to be vengeful, one can still at least be smart about it. The dead don't suffer.

You make a lot of good points, but pointing out that one of the fathers objected isn't one of them.

He may not be the best point, but I still think he is pretty good. The desire for revenge is as common as dirt, and just as dirty. Just one relative still opposed to government sanctioned murder trumps a hundred who think otherwise, because we all know that most of those thinking otherwise want nothing but more blood. The father is obviously not the vengeful sort and is probably therefore actually using that grey matter God gave him. He is an example for us all.
