5:45 is a time when it is most difficult to see this season. Not noticing a crumpled up guy (who was probably wearing either black or gray) until you have hit him is easy to do.
And careless pedestrians that get themselves hit by one car only to be hit again by another. Cannot forget about them. I dodge idiots like that regularly. I have seen dogs with more awareness of the danger of walking in front of a moving car. Driver's have a limited field of view and need time to stop. Pedestrians have it easy, and 99 percent of time when they get hit, it was their own negligence and carelessness that allowed it to happen. I have jumped over guard rails just to make sure I would not be hit by passing cars. It could not be easier for a pedestrian to get out the way, or never get in the way in the first place. Cars are pretty much set on certain courses. Yet, they usually get the blame. Insane.

Short, simple and totally devoid of any details. Just right to get everybody fired up. Would not want some little detail like they were all 17 or there were a couple "artistic" family pictures of kids in the bath mixed with clothed and perfectly normal pictures of kids to get in the way of a chance to incite moral rage.

Yes, that and lop-sided support for a certain conclusion.
At the moment the Iranians are dependent on other countries just to get fuel for its reactors. Of course, the article does not tell you that, and those making the money off the sales don't either. And they sure don't want Iran to be independent of them or their business.
I think its safe to say that while the modern reactors can run (and the article does not say "can" run, but makes it seem like "must" run) on less enriched fuel, that fuel is not going to last as long. That translates into steady business.
It is just as easy to speculate that the Iranians simply want to be energy independent, rather than not only pay through the nose for the fuel, but also be at the mercy of other countries in the event those countries decide to stop selling fuel. --Cirroc

The only issue I take with elbudamexicano's post is the suggested idea that only Japan paints certain groups with the same brush. Its a sad fact everywhere, not just Japan.

Skip, I will also add that if members of the Klan and the Panthers ever do go seeking dialogue, I won't oppose it as long as it has rules and a mediator. But that assumes there is some issue to work out other than race hate, which is of course impossible to solve between them. But let's say they were going to negotiate restricting their rallies to certain parts of town to avoid each other. Sounds good to me. A mediator who knows both sides is going to go a looooooong way to making that work.
Obama is the man who knows both sides. --Cirroc

Those two groups are not fighting each other as far as I know. There is no violence between them at this time, nor am I concerned that some will break out soon. If it does, I would suggest some dialogue, in the form of peace negotiations, that has strict rules and is firmly moderated and geared toward ending the violence.
But I think you are confusing changing people's minds with what I was suggesting, which is to just keep the peace. As the Black Panthers and the Klan prove, two diabolically opposed groups can live in the same country without tearing each other's throats out. Since that is already happening, why toy with it? They have already been convinced not to war with one another except in the realm of ideas. No other compromise is necessary.
Well, it would not be hypocritical if others did it first or everyone did it together, unless of course the LA Times actually had the power to stop it all, and I don't think they did.

Maybe. Maybe not.
Did anyone jump to the conclusion that the Palin "around with terrorists" mannequin hung was a symbol of gender hate??
Maybe the message was that Obama should be hung like many pure white men have been have for some perceived crime. And Obama is not black anyway. He is mixed.
If a black man hung GWB in effigy, would be a big deal? Heck, I would like to do it myself!
Anyway, I hope the litterbugs are made to explain what their message means. All this guessing is annoying.

Beat the cops at their own game everyone. Quietly enjoy yourselves. Cause no trouble. Tell all cops you are going to a party at a certain stop. Before the stop check your cell phone and say the party has been moved further down the line. Repeat as many times as necessary. Be calm. Let the cops get physical first. And definitely definitely, police the gaijin that act like drunken idiots.

Journalism opportunity here. I hope everyone takes a camera, preferable a video camera. I want to see footage of the coppers harassing westerners in costumes. And there will be some great printable stories about this. Maybe not as great as the Teletubby Briton in the moat, but....Hey! I just got a great costume idea!
Seriously, ready your cameras please.

I have to back up those here that stress the importance of sitting down and talking with those you may disagree with. Anyone who disagrees with that idea is either 1) a true warlover or 2) seriously confused on how to avert troubles and war.
Yeah, Obama has talked to Khalidi. Has Khalidi blown anyone up before or since? No. See how that works?
Anyhow, I wonder how many here criticized Donald Rumsfeld for visiting Saddam but are now defending Obama no matter who he associates with as an automatic response? ( I did not because I had to read up on Khalidi, and I can't really find that big a problem with him that he cannot be talked to. I know now.) I wonder how many stood up for Old Rummy but are now criticizing Obama for weak ties to dubious men?
I do not expect any confessions, but the guilty know who they are. Please be consistent people and be true to principles. Quit taking sides, because taking sides without being true to principles is a root cause of the unfairness that leads to all the strife we have. There is no perfect entity. We have to talk out our differences. And that folks is why I support the talker named Barack Obama.

Skip, did they actually print the e-mails or did they merely quote from them? Were they first to do this or did others do it at the same time? Was the Times given exclusive use of those e-mails? Or were they the only ones in possession?
I do not know anything about it, so please enlighten me. But I am reading that simple contention and thinking you may have made a very unfair comparison. I seriously doubt it was up to the LA Times whether those mails got out or not. Please back up you contention or we have to consider it moot.

It seems to me that the article is exaggerating the problems caused? I never attended one of those, but this is the first I have heard of actual problems. I thought it was just the suck-through-teeth ojisans that got rankled.

Emergency phone? That is a good idea. Pay phones are quickly disappearing and cell phones can be lost, stolen or broken. Even if it is a ploy from the companies, it is still a good idea.
A camera in the machine? I have the urge to cut the machine's electric cable, paint the lens black, and scrawl the words "surveillance society" on the machine. But maybe that is just me? --Cirroc

Skip and Smith, you both have good points. How it would all come out in the courts is anybody's guess, and I am sure that both outcomes happen with regard to those silly hate crime laws. A lot of that depends on the mood and prejudices of the people, and hatred of whites, real as it is, is not even fathomable for a lot of people, even lawyers and judges.
I believe that if it were an effigy of Obama, public opinion would go nuts, and even the most ridiculous charge would be filed just to get this dude into a courtroom.
God I hope not. Hate crime laws are about as stupid as they come. You punish the crime, not the motive. The motive has no bearing on punishment unless those making the rules and/or the judgments are prejudiced themselves. Why should someone get more time for killing a person of a race they hate, but less for killing for money? It makes no sense.
And it just gets silly when this guy has effigied not one but two white people and nobody is thinking race hate. But noose an Obama mannequin and that is right where minds go. Why? Because he is white? Heck, I am white and I have more negative feelings about whites than any other race. --Cirroc

Pork is still pork though, but its never labeled "pork". It can be labeled "arms for Iraqis" or it can be labeled "alms for Americans" and either could be pork. You have to watch where the money goes. I cannot say anything about either McCain's or Obama's record on that. --Cirroc
