Recent ? Always seen that in Japan. It's not a rarity in my country.

If I understand the readers it's weird because it's women but it's normal when it's men that gather to in all-men groups to watch base-ball, wrestling and cruise red light districts ? Why the double standard ?

"When we socialize with men, we end up going to the average izakaya every time. "

That's true. Many men are very limited. Propose anything different from the izakaya : Fine food ? Uhhh, I just want my yakitori with beer. Dancing ? me ? no way. Shopping, exhibition, museums ? Oh, I wait outside. Movie ? OK only if it's action. Well, they have wifes and girlfriends too, so the girls need to go out without them most times. Otherwise they'd have 2 nights out a year, one to see the Hanshin Tigers and one nomi-hodai in a beer garden. Even a guy like my Dad that goes to gourmet restaurants, will spend the day shopping for clothes and enjoys a esthe thalassotherapy week-end... he doesn't attend so much the girl parties/trips because his job is more important than a woman's job, and he is too busy.

A real shame. Send all contestants, spectators and organizing peeps to live 6 months in a country where food is scarce.

"Her book was about the failings of the most powerful men in politics... and you can't see how this sort of allegation might, just possibly, tie in to marketing her book? "

Her book was published 8 years ago. She said nothing back then.

"If she was angry enough to go on national television and denounce him on a TV show "

That was 5 years later, after she had published several other books... and after the guy had another similar issue reveal by media.

"then surely she was angry enough to walk down to the police station and file charges?"

It's possible that she did, but did not maintain her accusation later. That was not in New-York. In France, the files are not open to public (rarely cops let information leak). So we have to wait for the trial to know.

Well, the woman didn't simply wait 9 years. One less known point is she was a family friend of DSK and his first wife. She grew up and went to school with his daughters. It's a situation similar to kids raped by an uncle.

The delay to sue for rape is 10 years (or 10 years after the person is 18, in case of child victim) because the situation of victims is very difficult as theit immediate surrounding often condemns, even if the crime is proven and the criminal sent to jail. They can more safely sue a few years later, after leaving that family, changing of job and or city.

In this case, she went to see a lawyer the next day (she might have physical evidence, we don't know the file). And with her mother, they went to tell the execs of the PS party (to which both DSK and the mother belong) that they wanted to sue. From that it appears, nobody supported her but on the contrary they'd bully her if she went further. And she said she wanted to spare DSK's daughters that didn't know. She surely was naive about the last point.

" I would have had a bit more respect for her if she would have brought this up at the beginning of this case"

Where were you ? You should have expressed your support then. For the crowd, at that time, she'd have been a mythomane telling that story about a famous man, only to get a book publishing deal. I know women that sued important guys, and they had to move to another city after, as the "crowd" was against them, not against the guy, even after he was proved guilty. And most people say : "Yes, the guy is a playboy but precisely as it is known all around, the women that still went close to him, that must be that they wanted some, or they wanted to blackmail him...". People don't like victims. Just like here in Japan. Is it different in any country ?

But after he got his trouble with a Hungarian IMF staff and that was published in major media, DSK's problem became publicly discussed. He has more than the 3 current cases. So she told the story at that time.

Since the maid case, she has received more support. It's mostly because the attitude of PS Party leaders (covering their major politicians in any circumstances, defending Polanski, etc) has become exposed.

Now, of course, her lawyer chooses the more dramatic timing, she is considering her best interest. But well, why wouldn't he ?

"If Mr. Straus-Kahn is innocent "

Innocent, he is not. DNA proves he had sex with her.

If she is what they say... she could still be raped. A liar can be raped. A criminal can be raped. And rapist should be punished anyway.

Not guilty of rape, he might be. If she consented, he shouldn't go to jail.

But he will be forever a politician that was stupid enough to sleep with a hotel maid controled by mafia. His career is terminated.

Unless they can prove that she raped him. Who knows ?

I agree Daito. No excuses are owed to persons that were glad to benefit from Tepco cheap security policy over the years. If they had a minimum of decency, they would want to apologize and they'd bring 10 times the sum they benefited from Tepco to compensate the victims.

That meeting is an imposture. TEPCO has stopped paying its bills in March, and taxpayers of Japan cover its debts and we'll repay for years. So the shares should be worth 0.0000 yen (too bad we can't charge negligent shareholders). The State owns the company, that should be officialized.

"defeating a proposal from 402 shareholders that demanded TEPCO abandon nuclear power."

Only 402 ? Seriously, even the most pro-nuke people on earth don't want to see the Tepco gang in that activity.

    "all they deserved was “seppuku,"

No way, that's for honorable warriors that were fighting for a master/a cause, not petty cheats that only covered their own rear. Auction their belongings, make them work as slaves, then when they can no longer, take organs for transplants. The debts are so huge that every little bit counts.

"foreigners" ? That's not about us, the zainichi people, isn't it ? Well, expat population is rotating. An earthquake, an economic crisis, they go away. A big project, an economic boom, they come by thousands.

@Tmarie, "No idea if the food is safe and labeled properly, air quality unsure, water, unsure... "

Exactly... so they relocate to Shanghai, And there food is safer, air and water quality so much better ?

They should wear white and light colored ones like people from other countries. Why black ? Idem for tights. Fashion. They think that makes them look slimmer maybe. And yes, some believe like Kview that black fabric blocks more sun than white. Not the case. Fabric, any color, can block the rays.

"A no no in urban Japan. "

Also a no no in countryside gaikoku where my grand-mothers lived. The pretty apricot tan or just get red. Then the dull brown tan. Then the dirty looking "freckles", Then the black spots. Who wants that ? I am not impressed by the sun-tanned generation of my mother and aunts. No they are elderly with terrible skins, which is the least problem, and they can get laser to remove spots, botox, etc. . The concern is there are more of them that have got their skin cancer than that haven't yet. In places where they get way less sunlight than here.

If I can avoid repeating the mistake... I also cover myself carefully, for outdoor activities during the day, from May to November (in Osaka). It's easy to wear long sleeves and carry a parasol. Sunscreen cream gives me other skin problems if I use it too frequently. I keep it for occasions when there are no other options (water sports...).

I am not getting the "vampire skin" at all. Maybe I eat too much carotene loaded food. I think to get that color, they need more than avoiding the sun. Many bleach the skin with some cosmetics.

Well, you put your bobo farm between the 2 biggest power plants of the world... that was already ironic, no ? I'm sorry for all the people that lost their belongings, houses and business, but in this case, really nothing special.

In my old village, a number of fields were "selected" as possible land to sell away to build a new airport.... 5 to 15 years later. Farmers received small checks at once. Plus, as a consequences, the selling price went above market (as they hoped big premium when they'd sell to prefecture) and renting super-low (you'd have to move away your farms). When the project was voted, of course, all the beatniks doing their so-called organic carrots did huge anti-aiport demos. That reminds me that lady, because they explained to me, village girl, how they had "cleaned from chemicals" the soil of my great-granny 's marsh. Sure ! It had been marsh, since prehistory until the 1990's when they redirected the river. But thanks for your work, we get an organic airport.

Posted in: We spent years creating chemical-free soil for organic vegetables but now it is covered with radioactive materials. What an ironic consequence.

    "Ideal for what/whom?"

For marketing. For selling futile stuff to those young women. At 20, Norika had a nice body for sure and she was beauty queen. But that was not ideal. Nothing to sell, you can't become like that, it's DNA. Since then she has become underweight (that helps selling her stupid books where she gives recipes and recommands brands to eat 700 calories a day). And she had everything done, teeth, hair and skin colored, boobs, "anti-aging" , just to list the super-obvious ones... You still can't become like her, but you can buy all that too...
    She can sell so much.

She looks good ? Tastes and colors.

They had them already a few month ago. I didn't see anyone ordering. I guess it's like pizza in the US. People share one with 4-6 persons, so nothing special. Still that's disgusting to see it, They had them on those huge posters. Yuck... And in times when food-binging induced obesity becomes a major social problem over the world, isn't that silly ?

I don't choose much. Due to share code, I get a ticket and I discover later what company it is. My criteria are route/schedule, price, and the possibility of changing my reservation. I don't care if I book for 3 days to Seoul this week-end , but for a longer and further trip, it's important. I pay a little more to be sure that I can reschedule a trip I booked 6 months in advance in case of personal problems. Or after 2 months in Europe, I can ask to change my flight back from Monday to Tuesday, or leave from Amsterdam instead of previously planned Paris. I don't care about food (I don't eat), entertainement (I sleep) nor comfort (I'm short).
Cathay was my worst experience ever, but nothing really bad. Just been stuck 24 hours without food nor air-conditioning in old Hong-Kong Airport, and they hardly apologized.

"DNA can be extracted from anything from bodily fluids to hair and skin cells. ... "

Surely if you lose hair, it can transform itself into sperm ? That's like the girl that said she was virgin and got pregnant from the swimming-pool. So far, they did not publish the results. But they were clearly looking for fluids indicating sexual relations and/or a fight. Like the blood stains, you don't make some all the time.

Is it new ? In 95% of the thousands of yakiniku in Osaka, you can sit at the bar or around a big table shared with others, or get a small 1~2 person table. I didn't go much in those of Tokyo, but I doubt that's so different.

"No, she claims to have been sexually assaulted."

Tangible testimonies and elements converge to support her claims. Without the DNA evidence, the camera recordings and hotel staff testimonies, he would not be in jail today. The file is not empty. The affair is not judged but it is abusive to say it is only what one woman says. That's also unrelated with what the media do. They have no influence on the investigation of police nor on decisions of the judges.

So far he has been treated much more fairly than so many people in France where judges don't need one hint nor one testimony to lock someone, and they do it often. My cousin's friend spent 15 yrs in jail (condemned for life for double murder of kids), based one one vague testimony, no DNA, nothing. French judges decide on their "intime conviction" as stated in the law and that means they just follow their feelings. It's irrelevant, that's just to say he is not losing anything by being in that trouble in the US compared to being in France.

DSK being prevented to take a plane is based on serious charges (unlike the numerous cases of guys who happen to get a name homonym with person listed as potential terrorist). There is no reason to complain on unfairness about his case.

And I'll say if ever he was trapped, as some suggest (and I doubt it), by a woman pretending to agree to sex with him and later accusing him... so,if ever that was the case, he deserves getting the mediatic trouble anyway. He has been accused of harassing women 3 times, for what we know for sure. And there is that awful atmosphere in French politics these days. It is totally insane that he was not super more careful about his "love life", especially while abroad. No excuse for getting caught the hand in the same candy jar 4 times. Whatever is the truth...you are not fit to be a politic leader Monsieur Strauss-Kahn.

    Wow !

There never was any doubt that the guy was a kind of perv, even if he is a millionaire and he could afford more "legal" vice that he can ... ahem... at his age. So, really, that's illogical. Well, some guys seem to have "pulsions", otherwise there wouldn't be so many rapes.

But he was a target of a number of weird attacks -even in recent days. He is a regular target both because of his IMF job and because he is... well, he was, the most popular candidate for French president next year.

In a way, I hope this is truly the fact he has mental issues and he did it. Otherwise, it's very scary to think that kind of plot can be used to bar politics.

Yes, on treadmill or wherever, the daily hour of "cardio" has proven efficiency over the last 5000 years. It is surely a big part of what is needed to maintain lifelong health. But they can't take much money (if any) from people for something so basic. Also, so many want to hear that they need to spend only 3 hours a week the bum up from the couch.
