Netninja,
There is truth in what you say, but you can understand the impossibility of compensating systematically people that get sick due to something. At the end, you'll find 130 millions of Japanese deaths can be attributed to something. 50 millions of people could sue the Japanese State. Due to the problems caused by pollens, some people died, some persons are totally disabled by it during months, many only lose a few days of work and live weeks of hell. 50 millions of sufferers. That's not even the question of the proof, it's clearly due pollen, and the pollen producing forests were officially planted by Japanese authorities... but the rate of people that could claim compensation is half of the population. Compensation from who ? From the State = from themselves. Idem for Tepco, that would be citizens being compensated by... the tax they pay, At least, that's not the US, and people all get a large part of their medical expenses covered.
If the rice, plums and miso were food stocked from the year before, they were safe... while milk was produced by cows frolicking under the radiations and the leafy green veggies are the most exposed.
Which proves what ? I had an acquaintance "with no history of illnesses " that "died of acute leukemia" at the age of 20, a few years before Chernobyl, so many years before Fukushima. Medicine can rarely (if ever) verify the cause of a cancer.
Yes, reduce life span of a few decades... and cancer rate will be low like in countries where people live till the age of 50 in average. Otherwise, what can be done ? Encouraging a healthy lifestyle and reducing pollutions. That's vague. That's being done.

It's a big circus... Japan gives to develop Asia with one hand and accepted Asian money for Tohoku with the other hand. That's as if nothing had happened but all those politicians had the opportunity to look generous in the media. They do it for their image.
Posted in: Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has offered ASEAN leaders 2 trillion yen to help improve infrastructure in the region. Do you think that money should be spent on post-quake reconstruction efforts in the Tohoku?

Well that's the USA but what is scary is all the awful trends from there end up spread over the planet sooner or later. I agree Vic, they seem more interesting in making money than anything else.
At age 2 ? In my family, every baby has its weight/height chart from birth. Data collected once a week till one, once a month while growing up, 4 times a year when adult. Don't tell me they waited till 2011 to get the idea.
That's really sad for the kids. That a 9 yr kid is overweight is already a huge failure from caregivers and from doctors monitoring the family. Shouldn't there be some reaction to address the issue as soon as it is noticeable and make in sort that 2 yrs later he/she is back at a healthy weight ?
What's the point of screening and then do nothing ? That would be a bit paternalistic... but given the situation, I think that in the US the weight monitoring should become part of the school curriculum and for any child out of the normal (without particular condition), parents/caregivers should be required to take classes, go to workshops to learn basics of healthy lifestyle and even give account of their effort, and if not, lose custody. It's easy to lose your driver license, but they let you wreck the kids' health.
That one kills me ! Shouldn't they start the advice even earlier than age 9 months before birth ? They count on primary school kids to make adult stop the ciggie ?

I don't insult you. I just say what kind of abuse you are supporting. I don't find you respectful.
Ethnic cleansing. Religious cleansing. Political cleansing. That's disgusting, to say it politely.
I'm glad for you. Fortunately a dictatorship is not the end of life for everybody. I hope many people live happily in Bhutan in spite of the hardships of the regime and underdevelopment. But with 1/5th of its population living the tragic refugee life, I find the mention of the "Gross National Happiness" really insulting for them. These people have been chased away since the establishment of the masquerade constitution. And it's not over. The handsome king speaks beautifully. He'll be credible when his militias stop the dirty work and when the refugees can go back home.

I disagree totally. I don't think it's normal for leaders of a democracy to roll down the red carpet for all the dictators, tyrants, slave-owners of the world... I protested when my country's president received royally Khadafi, Ben Ali, etc... It's very difficult to decide the level of relation to balance the need to keep relations, and to avoid supporting dictators. The situation of Bhutan and its regime is unclear. That's good to encourage them toward progress... but keeping distance is necessary.
As they accept to receive them, they treat them with respect, the Tenno family and the Foreign Affairs staff are here for that... But other ministers are not doing decorum. They spend time with any representative in charge of issues of countries only in case Japan has lots of interactions. The Defense Minister surely spends thousands of hours talking to all sorts of US officials, as they have lots to discuss about US bases, Japanese armies... but please enlight me if you know of some defense issue to discuss with Bhutan. I don't think the King of Bhutan had asked a meeting with that minister.
Foxie, I find your speeches disgusting. You've been there to check the happiness ? Maybe you'd find everything so cute and traditional. Up to the mid 70's, there were people like you to say the Communist block countries, Spain, Portugal, Greece, were such paradises with their reformist leaders and everybody so happy... There were wealthy tourists going there and coming back saying people were happy and had no reason to complain about the regime.
He has achieved good PR, by inviting cinema stars, etc. Really, me too, I have want to marry Tony Leung in Bhutan. But that's theater. If he was a sincere supporter of democracy he would have renounced to the throne, given back the crown and the jewels. Now, he is like a slave owner. I hope, for the slaves, that he is a good master and he starts giving them a few things to be theirs, but I won't praise him for that, that's the strict minimum, like pet owners feeding their pet, strict minimum. It's a small country, so paying for the lifestyle of their noble class must be a heavy burden. From the factual data we get, half of the inhabitants of Bhutan live in the level of development of Antiquity : no school, no access to doctors and hospitals, no modern equipment of any kind. The cute king and queen are not having it too hard, they only go there for the holidays and official touring, they have lived luxury life in England since their birth.

Anyway, he should have refused and apologized before. The error was to invite ministers to this dinner. Frankly nobody cares about queens of medieval valleys with less inhabitants than a ward of Tokyo. There is huge imperial family and foreign affair staff to dine with that kind of tarento.

What a proactive team we have in power ! The 2011 rice has been on sale for 2 or 3 months and they wake up now ? I don't think that rice would kill us more than stress from work, lazy lifestyle, food additives, pollen, sands from Chinese deserts, cigarette, alcohol, gas from cars or whatever pollution. But they are playing with people's nerves, definitely. The systematic delay to announce any problem, the recurrent announcements, that makes people worry about safety of any Japanese food, increasingly.
Farmboy, are they exclusive ? I'd check all boxes. Mistakes at each step.
They should have for 100% of Fukushima prefecture crops, and for the identified hot spots. They had no hurry, they could have taken 2 years to sort the rice and see which would go to make biofuel, which to feed cattle. Enough rice from further locations could be put on the market, without any shortage.

I went to see the site, there is a photo. In a decoration like that, I hope they at least serve bats. Komori nabe, komori no nitsuke, komori no bezemito-yaki, komori no hokipoki domburi, komori no raminton, komori no paburoba...
Faceless, when you read the menu :
... how can you believe you're going into a Japanese restaurant ?
They can't warn you more.
Which all taste the same ? Like vegemite tastes same as Japanese miso which has a standard taste (just pick the color that goes well with your hand bag) ?

I wish him well. But I don't think we need him. It's sad that at his age he is forced back to work just after leaving hospital. He could retire from official duty and take all his time to recover. His sons can have tea with the visiting royalties.

That's not simple. These guys need to work to buy food, they want to stay in areas where they have acquaintances not homeless (the little left of a normal life). The public housing tend to be far away from everything, they can't afford the ticket to commute and come to do their gomi sorting jobs, they would be totally isolated.

Please, name a country where mentioning "hey I have a MBA" 5 times in 5 articles is not perceived as confidence. Confidence is the "I have a BS in BS" t-shirt.
They don't want to embarrass others. Just like in my town in gaikoku. That doesn't mean that many don't make efforts to progress above the average. Look at that guy that had a Nobel price. He was not interested in the fame, but he is very ambitious about his research.
Doesn't any gaijin, be he/she passionating or boring, get attention in Japan (in China, in Kenya, in Finland, in Galapagos...) ?

In what were you superior ? Family had more money obviously. Then you ended up exactly like the school buddies. From what you say, you got the life of a totally conformist Japanese woman, or a totally conformist American woman, or any petite bourgeoise on the planet. Not that I have any problem with it, I am a very average person myself, not everybody can be Lady Gaga. I simply don't see what you achieved better than the millions of others. What difference now ? If you have some artwork or original success story, let us know.

Oh "smuggling" ... I think there is no typo. They count the cigarettes the tax guys at airports seize from tourists that are allowed to bring in 1 big pack and actually bring 2 or 3, There are more, because this year, more people went back to S-Korea and the Philippines and brought more ciggies as omiyage.
Oh dear... the efforts of JT being undermined. Give me a box of tissues.

This is called starvation. You do that torture to prisoners and Amnesty International lists you as a monster. A small framed adult needs at least 1200 cal a day to survive. It's a really good thing the victims of that stupid experiment regained weight, as the other likely consequence would be death.

Rebuilding at the same places is as wise as what Tepco did when they put the power plants at the sea side. That will be destroyed. It's only questions of when and how badly. As there are so many empty houses all over Japan, they could have relocated everybody. They'd have saved victims the weeks of eating old bread in the cold gyms without electricity, the months of camping in the shelters, the years of refugee camp life in temp housing from now.
The victims feel they have nowhere else to go, and the only thing they hope is authorities rebuild their town. It's because Japan has not the habit of giving benefits/ insurance to people and to let them decide of their fate. They consider people like children. They never give them the money, they give to the parents (the town hall). Even the charity money. Givers are either ignorant or they don't care as they give only to appear nice. The charities don't give it to people. The money has become funds at the disposal of local politicians. So you can see why every little mayor wants the money to stay in his town.

They don't. Few actors are like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The decently paid are the elite. The other 90% + are not on wikipedia. They are on only on IMDB (that lists tens of thousands) and they get low wages, for irregular short work stints. They do all the small roles in the background of characters in TV series and B series movies, they get even jobs for local ads and stage events in shopping malls.
Yes, Paulinusa, they found the official birth date of the woman from her credit card data and they published it. I can't imagine a shop or any business daring to do that. It's a lack of respect of customer privacy. Just for the principle, I hope they lose the case and get to pay big money. If not, what's next ? They'll publish medical records including HIV status ? personal address for your stalkers ? Why not her credit card number ? And well, as all the pros in movie industry check the data base, if they see Miss B. 46, they don't even look photos, they click away. They can browse "actress in their 30's". While without age, her agency sends her photos as "woman in her late 20's/30's" and they often find she looks OK to play a 32 yr old woman, a 35 yr old Mum, etc, so they call her to come to the castings.
