As for this thread, I choose to ignore partisan teeth gnashing/hand wringing and go with the facts: Obama's flip on campaign funds is not a deal breaker.
"Opting Out of Public Funding Unlikely to Hurt Obama"
Despite all the agonized media coverage of Barack Obama’s decision to opt out of public funding for Election 2008, the decision is likely to have little impact on Obama’s standing with voters. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 30% of voters favor public funding and just 16% say it is Very Important in determining their vote. These results are consistent with earlier polling on the topic.

Weekend Election Roundup
If the election where today:
www.electoral-vote.com has Obama increasing again in the Electoral College.
Obama 317 McCain 194 Ties 27 Two weeks ago was Obama's 287 to McCain's 227, with 24 tied. Last week its Obama's 304 to McCain's 221, with 13 tied. The big change is Florida has moved from Republican into the neutral column.
The PBS Newshour -- www.pbs.org/newshour/vote2008/primaries/states/ -- is unchanged from last week, with McCain still leading with 227 sure or likely EVs (232) to Obama's 200 (217), with the remainer up for grabs.
Last week Real Clear -- www.realclearpolitics.com/ -- had Obama leading 238 Obama/ 190 Mc / 110 Tossup. This week Obama stayed the same, but McCain lost FLorida's 27, so its (238/163/137) If the Election where held today, and toss up states were included, Obama would win by a sqeecker 289 to 249. In the popular vote, Obama leads McCain 47.5 41.9 Obama +5.6 which is an increase of + 3.8 (46.2 to 42.3) from last week.
And finally Rasmussen -- www.rasmussenreports.com -- "The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows Barack Obama attracting 47% of the vote while John McCain earns 40%. When "leaners" are included, Obama leads 49% to 42%. These results show a slight uptick for Obama since he formally opted out of public funding for the Presidential campaign this fall." These data show Obama increasing his lead over McCain from last week ( 46% to 39%./ 49% to 43%.) For two week now, Obama has enjoyed a lead of five-to-seven points over McCaiin, which is the reverse of April and May.
The Rasmussen Reports with the Electoral College has Obama leading in states with 200 Electoral College votes while John McCain leads in states with 174 votes. When leaners are included, Obama leads 284-240. On Friday, June 20, Colorado moved from Leans Democratic to Toss-Up but Ohio did the reverse, moving from Toss-Up to Leans Democratic.
This is the first movement in the EC in months, a movement towards Obama
Conclusion: these data show a slight upswing for Obama. Particularly in the states of Florida, Colorado, Virginia, and Ohio which the Obama campaign is trying to make "battle ground."
Nevertheless, its way to early for any meaningful forecasts. We've got a lot of time between now and November.

Signs are emerging that Iraq has reached a turning point. Violence is down, armed extremists are in disarray, government confidence is rising and sectarian communities are gearing up for a battle at the polls rather than slaughter in the streets.
Now where have I heard this before....

It is unclear from you post weather you lump me in with the American Right. If you are, you may wish to reconsider that proposition. My former handle was Dananator. As the JT archives show, I have been one of the most ardent critics of Bush's War even before there was Bush's War and am second to none when it comes to fighting the good fight against these cretins of the Right.
But the depravity of the Right in no way excuses the depravity of the Left. Just as the idiocy, incompetence and injustices of the Bush Administration in no way excuses the fatuity of the anti-American. Two RIght wrongs do not may the Left right, as it were. The French were wrong, Putin was wrong, and the millions around the world, most of all the millions in Japan against Bush's War were wrong, because they were "right" for all the wrong reasons.
The last five years have only served to strengthen my appreciation that neither the (American) Right nor the (American) Left have the answer to the problem of American leadership in the post-Cold War era.
"Real patriotic Americans" must recognize this.

Over five years ago, I posted the following at JT:
Within decent people, a critical and mildly hostile attitude towards American foreign policy is more or less compulsory. But for the Anti-American it is an unbridled obsessive hatred of everything American. They hate everthing about us and that blind hatred leads them not be interested in understanding the world around them, but rather fiercely committed to viewing all developments as indicators that America - the decadent evil power -is declining.
Basically, anti-Americans follow the principle that any action taken by the US must be in the wrong, and even if successful was accomplished through underhanded means. Further. these people were undisguisedly pleased when the Twin Towers fell, when the US embasy got sacked in Iran, or when we were driven out of Viet Nam. They can not help getting a certain kick out of seeing our country humiliated, because they need these reminders of the limits of our truely intimidating power to feel that in the end a final humilation will come our way, especially in times like now when it appears America will never fade away.
Anti-US inspiration is essentially negative. They need not so much to alter or comprehend the external world as to feel that their internal struggle for respect is going in their way. In each case there is the same obsessive fixation on an evil and corrupt America, and the same inability to form a genuinely rational opinion based on probabilities. One prod to the open nerve of Anti-Americansim, and decencies vanish, the past altered, and the plainest facts denied.
In short, dont waste your time with these self-willed nutballs. I don't, unless I'm feeling plucky.

DanMan's Weekend Election Roundup
If the election where today:
www.electoral-vote.com has Obama increasing his lead in the Electoral College. Last week it was Obama's 287 to McCain's 227, with 24 tied. This week its Obama's 304 to McCain's 221, with 13 tied. While Indiana moved more towards McCain, one of the "battle ground" states MI flipped to Obama, along with her 17 electoral votes (EVs). NC also edged closer towards toss up, which the Obama campaign hopes to make a battle ground state.
The PBS Newshour -- www.pbs.org/newshour/vote2008/primaries/states/ -- is nearly unchanged from last week, with McCain still leading with 227 sure or likely EVs (232) to Obama's 200 (200), with the remained up for grabs.
Last week Real Clear -- www.realclearpolitics.com/ -- had Obama leading by 38 electoral votes. This week Obama increased his lead by 10 EVs (238 Obama/ 190 Mc / 110 Tossup) If the Election where held today, Obama would win by a sqeecker 272 to 266. In the popular vote, Obama leads McCain + 3.8 (46.2 to 42.3)
And finally Rasmussen -- www.rasmussenreports.com -- last time had McCain slightly eading in popular vote for months, tied with Obama for the past two weeks. Now, Rasmussen for Sunday shows Barack Obama attracting 46% of the vote while John McCain earns 39%. When “leaners” are included, Obama holds a six-point advantage, 49% to 43%. This is the eighth straight day that Obama has enjoyed a lead of five-to-seven points.
Electoral college breakdown goes Democrats 185 Republicans 174 Leaners 141. With Toss-Up 38 With Leaners its 260 to 240 for Obama, with 38 toss up.
This is unchanged from last week.
Conclusion: these data show a slight upswing for Obama, but its way to early for any meaningful forecasts. We've got a lot of time between now and November.

If you think the Repubs got a monopoly on things like this, you are in for a very hard life.
Grow up. Republicans run a tighter negative campaign than the Dems.
For the first time in a long time, poor whites, whites who reside with blacks and get the brunt of all of the race problems in America on them are teetering towards Obama.
Oh really now... Well, I never wrote that it was working class whites who are the ones who want to believe the Slime Machines rumor mill. Nah, I didn't, cause that is not what I think.
(But you apprarently do. How elitist.)
I wrote: "The people who want to believe the rumors are true are going to believe them, and they are the same people who would never vote for Obama in the first place." You'd be wise to draw out who I think the people are who want to believe the rumors, rather than assuming, and assuming incorrectly.
I think Obama is trying to be the kind of politician who comes along every once in while and through character and savy tactics and political vision redraws the political landscape, which is ripe for a reallignment. FDR, Nixon and Reagan are such figures. FDR knitted together a grand coalition of Dixiecrats and Liberal Dems with the New Deal that lasted until Nixon broke it apart with the famous Southern Strategy. Reagan finished what Nixon started when brought many conservative Democrats over.
Obama, along with Dean, with "his new kind of politics" that will supposedly end the hyper partisanship of the past 15 years to a close is trying to build a broad center based coalition.
The people who will never vote for Obama are the racists and the Right, the former because because Obama is part black, and the latter because Obama is part- Liberal. Though there may be correlation between being a poor, Apalacian white and being racist, its only a correlation. And what I've seen of Obamas style of politics is he constantly works to get every vote he can for strategic and tactical reasons. Strategically, reaching out to as many voters as possible is consistent with his new kind of politics message, and while perhaps he may not win over many, he creates a much stronger message to those who buy into his message and those who are on the fence. Tactically, of course, the 50 state/new kind of politics strategy works very well because it forces his opponents to spend money defensively.

Anyways, there are going to be a lot more silly rumors like this thrown out by the RNC and its operatives. And they really won't affect the election either way.
The people who want to believe the rumors are true are going to believe them, and they are the same people who would never vote for Obama in the first place.

have a look for yourself. Let me know if you find something different..
I have. Many times.
If you wish to taken seriously, its not a bad idea to know what you are talking about, and when challenging someone who does, be prepared to back up what you say. I find it disheartening, though typical, that though you are the one who asserts there are no 4th, 5th or 6th amendment equivalents in Japanese law, you seem quite content leaving that assertion unsubstantiated. Especially when considering how that assertion is the basis for your challenge to my point that Japan's police practices should match the laws governing policing.
Be that as, so, kindly check Articles 33 - 35 of the Constitution. And the Code of Criminal Procedure Law, Art 210 and 220
My only other advice would be to refuse to show the contents of your bag, and see what happens
This is not other advice, as you have offered no advice to me before. If you wish to argue that it is unwise to refuse the cops, well, that is precisely the issue we are discussing. Regarding what to do when the interacting with the police, I offer the following which you may take as you wish:
When dealing with the Japanese police, first and foremost bear in mind that local cops and the prefectural police are two different animals. My advice is unless you are connected -- and I mean really connected as in a foreign government official, CIA or under the direct supervision of a such a person of status either foreign or Japanese-- do not mess with the prefectural police. You may be right. And you may run into a lot of trouble that could be easily avoided. And corrected, given the appropriate time.
With the omawari san or the trafic cops, well, there is quite a lot of wiggle room. Still, always be formal and respectful, even deferential, but you need not comply if they have not made their case to you. Granted, you must be sufficiently proficient in Japanese to be able to make your case to the officer.

There are no 4th, 5th or 6th amendment equivalents in Japanese law.
Are you certain about that. I mean, really certain. Because it would really make someone look ignorant, foolish, or dishonest to say something like that and not double-check after being challenged on it.
