you think they are going to let the para-olympics be held in a city with 2 or 3 wheelchair ramps per 1,000 buildings? I don't think so.

first off people use the word corporate profits like it is a bad word. it is not. i am all for corporate profits. but if the Japanese are so confident their rice is better than everyone elses, why do they need to protect it?

Kobe beef is a good example. There are Ausie and American beef imports much cheaper, but even I as an American am happy to pay 3X more for Kobe beef because it is FAR better. If rice is the same like Japanese say, let the competitions begin.

are rice farmers that important? How many are there? 2,000 or so? Why decide a countries policies based on 2,000 people? This is silly.

the prices are high here because people are employees to do silly jobs not had in other countries (the guy who hands you a ticket at a ticket machine for example).

Because of this unemployment is low, but prices are high. the figure is the same calculation other countries use, Japan is not washing the number to make it look good.

@ FPSRussia, you could not be more wrong. Stop living in the past. WWII has been over for half a decade. Much has changed since then.

Given the choice to trust Japan or China? Hmmm let's see? I don't remember Japan running over its own people with tanks in peaceful protests, nor do I see Japan banning internet sites from its people to censor information. Trusting ANYONE over China is a no-brainer.

China has never owned the islands. The US gave them back to Japan with Okinawa in the 70s.

Regarding capitalism, what is wrong with wanting peace for the sake of good economics? The only ones who complain about capitalism are poor people.

it is all a matter of what you are used to. In Hokkaido they would probably consider it light and have countermeasures ready for this. In Tokyo, it is the most snow in one day in 20 years (the news said) so no, they do not have countermeasures ready because it only happens once every 20 years.

If every business planned for and made regular expenditures for events that happen once every 20 years they would be bankrupt.

Again you seem to be completely devoid of any real knowledge of Japan. Then I guess my 20 years working in corporate Japan were for not!

they will store away the profits for the oncoming rainy days, rather than pay their workers higher bonusesand salaries. I work for the 25th largest corporation in Japan and our bonus was huge last year in part to the slowly recovering economy. Does the Japanese company you work for go about like this? Or do you not work for one?

What the Japanese economy really needs, rather than this government directed expenditure is a complete economic and social restructuring so that the Japanese public consume more of what they manufacture and manufacture less of what they've been manufacturing for the last 30 years. Actually the Japanese buy what they manufacture more than most other developed countries. What they need is exactly what Abe is doing to boost exports.

would the US really be Japan's defender in a time of conflict?

The US signed a treaty after WWII saying they would, and revised Japan's constitution in return for that signature. You bet they would.

"claimed by Japan recognised by no-one else!"

Outta Here you are a little misinformed. The Senkaku islands were given back to Japan by the US in 1971 with Okinawa and the US congress recently approved an official statement that the Senkaku islands belong to Japan.

The US clearly recognizes the islands as Japan's which is why China might fly around like a little fly but they would never dare touch those islands or risk getting spanked by the US.

also, the middle class will benefit from this. who do you think all of these companies that will get government contracts employ? the middle class. matter of fact, 85% of Japan's population is middle class.

government projects mean companies thrive, higher bonuses and more cash pumped into the economy by consumers. THAT is what Japans economy needs the most right now is a fresh cash enema up its butt.

at least the status quo government policy is changing. this trickle down economic plan is more like Reagan than Obama. In Japan's case this is exactly what the economy needs.
