According to this survery: http://www.idea.int/vt/survey/voterturnoutpop2-2.cfm
Japan comes 60th out of 140 countries in voter turnout for countries that have had two or more elections since WWII with 69% turnout.
Be interesting to see how that would skew if you just looked at the turnout for the last 25 years because I am sure the UK would not score as high as 74.9%.
Actually looking at the election breakdown other than 1995 (44.4%) it averages around 60% which these days I think is quite respectable.
I know I have said it before but polititions should retire at the national retirment age and politics should be taught as compulsory subjects at secondary school in all countries.
Those that do vote just vote the way of mummy and daddy except occaisionally the public get so hacked off they vote for a change - here's hoping next time round in Japan...

Other than countries with compulsory voting (I think all countries should have this) voter turnout is so low - the in situ government needs to worry when the "slackers" start to moan and grumble.
Wish they would here!

Is there any kind of civic honours system in this country? If there is then surely these guys would come highly recommended. Well done chaps!

The fact that it is in Japan makes me think - h'mm domestic air travel or should I go to PNG or elsewhere for half the price?

Should not be allowed from a purely social point of view. I am sure there would be arguments from a security & safety point of view but first and foremost it should be socially unacceptable.

well let's let the American's be the test gerbils and in 10 years time when there is enough time to do a full case study to make proper data available then it might be worth considering.
Meanwhile I will continue to decline all unnecessary X-rays like this and the annual medical check. When I had my first check up here they could not believe that I had never had a chest x-ray in 38 years

This one cracked me up. So if I am stopped for speeding in my ferrari (I wish!!) I could come up with this defense?
Sooner or later this being Japan I suspect there could be a murder suicide and no prizes for guessing which side of the coin he will be. And they will use their own logic to justify it - "he made my life miserable"

Well done China great games - not so sure about that closing ceromony though... (Especially the British bit - and before anyone starts, I am British).
One of my favourite moments was Tanimoto's Gold - fantstic through, great reaction and even better reaction from her opponent! (Now do you believe I've British...)

It is a shame that Olympic sports are no longer amateur - they should get rid of football and tennis as well. Problem is so many sports are professional these days or played by such a small number.
Personally no issue seeing the exit of rounders. Not sure what would be brought in to substitute it though that a bigger cross section of the globe - as a Brit I would have to say something like 7's or 20-20 but trying to think outside the box a bit how about bowling? Even the yanks can't complain too much about that one!

beg to differ roomtemperature - they lost their title as raining Olympic champions but Japan won the Gold.
BTW do they still do hormone checks on femal athletes to check that they are indeed female? One or two at this olympics have looks more manly than some of the men - US softball team included

This is not just a Japanese thing by the way! It really depends on the situation but if it is the right partner and it is early days I would hope they understand why I have to work.

The headline says US Softball team loses Gold to Japan which to me implies thye think the Japanese girls did not deserve it. I don't care how they got there but it was a Gold Medal game that Japan WON.
Please change the headline to Japan win Gold Medal in Softball against USA.
Never could get into rounders so good to see forms of that sport out in next games - perhaps we could get 20-20 cricket in, there are more countries playing that than rounders and even my old mum is getting into that!

This is a global issue and not restricted to Japan - what is up with people these days?
What does infuriate me here is when there is a fire engine, police car or ambulance on a shout people do not move out of the way for them - now that is truly a Japanese trait.

What rubbish! You have obviously not dived let alone done a technical dive where you might be required to "hang" and 3m for 30 minutes - I even know people that sleep on a deco stop!
It has been a while since I visited any of the scuba bulletin boards but I can pretty much assure you if you did you would very easily find an article about people trying to make theor own waterproof housing for some sort or music device...
And as to diving being dangerous - yes it can be if you are stupid and do not listen to instruction and follow the rules. Probably more people are injured or killed cycling in Japan daily than in a year diving
