Of course, the immediate anger goes towards the monster responsible for the little girl's death, but the anger should be directed at a society that creates these monsters and a public health system that ignores them.

A book on the best ways to eat rice? With your mouth, of course. Although, I do remember seeing an episode of Southpark that showed a different way of eating. I wonder if that is mentioned in the book.

Farmboy - it is to get a visa although, most do end up standing on a street corner asking if you want a ¥2,000 massage, nod, nod, wink, wink. I pity anyone who has to go through the hell of getting a spouse visa now.

A few years ago I confiscated three spy-cam pens from senior high students. Their intentions were clear and not honorable. This cop needs to see a psychiatrist, but will only get a slap on the wrist and a three-month pay cut.

I am in two minds. I feel the PM and his cabinet should visit yasukuni, but the rants of that senile old fool are just ridiculous.

Namabiru - Nice try, but no cupie doll. This kind of incident is 100% preventable, which means it is the result of carelessness and not an accident.

On a similar note: Many of the trains stations in Tokyo have signs in the elevators telling people to park wheelchairs parallel to the track and not at a right-angle, but I always see parents with their prams facing the tracks and many times in front of the yellow line and unattended. The many gods of Shintoism must be very powerful cos they are the only thing keeping many kids alive in Japan.

Another parenting fail in Japan. A 'normal' parent would at least be holding a two year old's hand.

I remember it vividly. I got a call from a friend and turned the TV on at the exact moment the second plane hit the second tower live. It was a jaw dropping sensation. I also remember trying to get onto the internet for more information but the networks were flooded and impossible to connect.

In Japan you will find a general opinion about the war segregated by age. The people under 40 will tell you Japan was foolish and should never had tried to take over Asia, while the older ones will tell you that Japan would have succeeded if the US didn't flatten Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I guess these two dudes in the photo fall into the latter category.

Gotta laugh at the right-wingers that drive around in their Chevy vans and International buses, hey?

In Oz you can get your licence at 17. In the US you can get your licence at 16. In Japan you can get your licence at 20, but I am yet to see a Japanese 20 year old the emotional maturity and common sense to drive a car.

Utrack - It's sounds like some poor soul was murdered, chopped up and had it's body parts scattered.

You think? Maybe it was suicide. :P

a cultural legacy has been abandoned in the name of logic.

I nearly fell out of my chair when I read this. Are they sure they are not Japanese?

stedGees! Bluewitch is a very passionate young lady. Even if radioactive particles were detected in the wood, which they weren't, the risk to health is virtually nil cos of the limited exposure. You get blasted with more radiation sitting in front of your TV or computer.

OK, live in Tokyo, but had 80% of my work cancelled cos the engineering company I was working for became too busy to have English lessons due to being directly involved in the Fukushima meltdown and shutdown. Why am I not entitled to compensation?

Happy holidays - Happy reunion with family/friends !

Happy? Where? There is nothing 'happy' about being stuck in the o'bon exodus. It is not a vacation. It is a duty!

My AC is always set at 21c and will stay that way. Sadly, the number of deaths from heat stroke is pretty consistant from year to year. Last year there were 9 deaths attributed to heat stroke, so blaming TEPCO and their power advisory is wrong. People are just stupid in the heat. And, 35c is not hot! People are just stupid in the heat

The material the tent is made from is a very strong poly-vinyl, which should contain the immediate release of radiation although, it will very quickly disintegrate in a typhoon. Of course, the most obvious question is, why the heck did it take five months for them to do it?

I saw one report from an international agency that stated the ground had been fractured under the reactor and the radioactive water had been seeping into the ground water. I dunno how this tent will do anything to prevent this.

I guess the main thing the tent will achieve is, the satellites won't be able to peer in and see what TEPCO is not doing!

Seriously, is anyone actually surprised by this? Everybody knew there had been huge media censorship and of course you would expect the details of the severity to also be censored from all agencies.. However, anybody expecting heads to roll over this is experiencing a pipedream cos it will all be forgotten very quickly, except by the tend of thousands of locals that were exposed to possibly lethal doses of radiation, of course.

“Please clean up the contaminated soil. The soil is everything for farmers like us. Without it, we can’t do anything.”

Sorry lady, but it could be anything up to a thousand years before that soil will be safe again.

Once again we see the J-gov sitting on their hands while their people suffer mental anguish at the expense of their inaction. These elderly farmers will probably never be able to return to their own farms and instead of being stuck in an evacuation center the J-Gov should be looking at ways to get these victims of japanese bureaucracy working again to stop them spiraling into depression and suicide.
