. there is no record that such a ruling was handed out.

I recommend you read ‘The Diaoyu / Senkaku Islands Dispute by Martin Lohmeyer (pge 70-71) and although the documents clarifying the Tokyo ruling were destroyed in the great August burn of 1945, it's amazing that the Ishigaki local government desisted, as did their fisherman, from seeking any rights or jurisdiction in the Senkaku waters from 1942 to 1945, after the Tokyo high court ruling.

    SushiSake3,.......

Excellent post, one of the best on JT ever and really sums up the Ishihara situation, The japanese might like the idea of living in the passive, in this way they leave responsibility to others, but although not a healthy democracy, Japan is a liberal democaracy and you get the politicians you vote or don't vote for, in a liberal democracy. Not voting in itself is a political statement in a liberal democracy.

In my younger days, 40 years ago, I never met one of the Weimar generation who absolved themselves of responsibility for the Nazi era by saying they weren't one of the 33% who voted for the National Socialists in the 1933 elections.

Not voting for Ishihara doesn''t mean you're against Ishihara and as much as the Japanese would like to say otherwise, their poliitical elite is what it is, because of the Japanese, not something different from the japanese.

Maybe, since Ishihara is moving the Tokyo metropolitan government into the real estate industry, he can buy Kunashiri, Etorofu and the other 2 northern territory islands while he's on a buying spree with my taxes

I have a bridge in Brooklyn New York that I want to to sell him

The islands are already legally owned by Japan and China has no genuine hostorical claim to them.

Even the Tokyo high court (Ishigaki ruling 1942) ruled that the islands fell under the jurisdiction of Formosa/Taiwan, therefore your statement is on totally shakey ground, even by Japanese law.

In any international court, regarding laws of ownership, this is totally a non-starter. International law concerning the transfer of ownership are based on the 19th Century case of ownership of an expensive pen, The more qualified of you can elaborate. The case basically was about a conman who bought an expensive pen with a cheque. The cheque bounced and when the conman was caught he had already sold the pen to a secondhand shop and spent that money. The original owner of the pen and the the secondhand shop owner went to court to get a verdict on the ownership of the pen, since they both had lost money.

The ruling, which is one used by nearly all courts, both national and international was the 'A Duke Cannot Annoint A King' ruling which was basically that just as a person cannot sell something that they do, the buyer cannot buy something which is not owned by the seller. The ownership of the pen reverted back to the original owner of the pen, since any contract between the conman and the secondhand shopkeeper was invalid.

I seriously doubt that the US would go to war with China to defend Japan in this situation.

The US has already stated (Clinton Nov 2011) that the territorial dispute between China and Japan is not covered in the US-Japan treaty. So as long as China doesn't attack Japan directly and China has enough of a deep sea fleet to defend any control of the Senkaku, the US is not gonna use its own naval forces in any Japan-Chinese naval conflict out of Japan's territorial waters proper.

Doesn't Japan rely a lot on export? More European countries in trouble => less import => also problem for Japan?

Japan actually exports not a great deal to Europe. Most of the Japanese companies in Europe use products/manpower within Europe. Of course the profits go to Japan Inc, but this 60 billion dollar exercise is really about stopping the Yen increasing strength as a safe haven currency on world FX.

It;s a bit like Canute trying to stop the tide, a futile exercise in mercantilism. As long as Japan runs a current account surplus the Yen will strengthen.

Umm lots of countries make shochu or something very similar...

And rice wine. This utter dribble from a government minister is what you expect from a 10 year old.

Good post SmithinJapan and exactly right, but the problem is not so much Japan per se as the Japanese political elites who are trapped in some 1980s time warp of still thinking Japan's got loadsa money and they still want to walk big on the global stage by dishing out their citizens' taxes to any lost world cause or another.

The japanese political elites should get with the program, if they want us to pay more taxes, they've got to spend those taxes wisely and on the Japanese, and not some spoilt Europeans whose quality of life is 10 times that of the average japanese.

It always makes me laugh that one of the biggest complaints I hear concerning western attitudes to Asia and Asians is that objectify, sexualize and trivialize the whole Asian experience.

I ask, why should the West do any differently, when all we get from Asia, culturally in the 21st Century, is bubble gum pop, sang by dancing robots dressed in sexy attire?

Oh.. I forgot to mention manga........my mistake,,,,,

There's a great article on Hashimoto at Spike Japan. It tells you a lot of things about the guy which the mainstrean press is too scared to print.

The old saying that the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree is really applicable to this guy.

NetNinja you will find these vehicles are manufactured in U.S. are you prejudiced because they carry a japanese name badge?

They are assembled in the US, there's a big difference

After the earthquake/trunami last year and the Japanese had to lay off their US factory workers becuase of the shortage of parts, it was clear to all that the Japanese had been playing around with the 80% domestic component clause.

Nissan is no different. The parts might no longer be manufactured in Japan, but it doesn't mean they'll be manufactured in the US either.

Really who gives a damm about Nissan, apart from Nissan workers? It's Japanese in name only. It's like the Brits attaching themselves to BP because there's a British in the name.

Japan is, domestically, slowly but surely going back to the late 1920's and 30's. The New Sunrise party will be the Seiyukai party that was. One of the BS statements that I get sick of hearing from the ignorant is that Japan is a democracy. Japan is not and never has been a democracy.

The Liberal Democratic facade of post-war Japan has been more due to the restraints, self imposed, on/by the Japanese political elites. The Japanese Supreme Court has failed time after time to protect the constitution and the Japanese people are totally indifferent to the Political procces.

If Hashimoto, Ishihara and gang get together and take power, they will feel no compulsion of self restraint and just like the Taisho democracy of the 1920s, Japan will resort to historical type: the dictatorship of the minority over the indifference and powerlessness of the majority.

Dark days ahead and the real depressing thing is that if to try to converse with an educated Japanese about the failure of the Taisho democracy and the rise of Seiyukai, they would think you were talking about a department store in pre-1945 japan.

Those who don't learn their history are...........

I say "Shame on you, New York" I'll write my letter of complaint soon enough. At a time when American markets need to be inspired they gave American money to the Japanese. New York is not Tokyo or Shibuya!!

I've gotta agree. America has to get out of this 1948 Marshall Aid think and start looking after its own. This would have never happened in Japan, even if the US produced a better quality vehicle. The US has to start treating economic fire with fire and domestically assembled Japanese vehicles are no substitute for US constructed vehicles. Let's hope there's an uproar in the US and this decision is reversed.

    PS I'm not American

In their 40s, out at a bar that late on a Tuesday? Can only imagine the type of women and the bar

That's a bit sexist. It's unlike you. Women have the right to do everything within the law that men do and it's judgemental jibes like yours that condemn Japanese women to stay imprisoned in the 19th Century.
