Maybe tenno chan can open up the grounds of the imperial palace for the homeless to have a permanent place of abode, essential in the job hunt.

    Thought not!

The Japanese Economic Model = Private Profit (the top 10 companies in Japan, since 2002, have all doubled their monetary resources stored away for a rainy day), Public Welfare.

Hokkaido is something like 200% food self sufficient and presently there are farms everywhere that are abandon.

Yes, but the cost to the Kansai - Kanto urban taxpayer is astronomical.

What Japan failed to have during it's drive to industrialization and needs to have today is an agricultural revolution along the lines of the British enclosure acts, which will force the unproductive farmer landowners to be either a salaried farm worker or move to urban areas and become a salaried industrial worker.

This draining of our taxes into a very under efficent agricultural sector, all under the charade of the drive for food auturky, will neither help the Japanese drive to food self sufficiency or benefit Japanese society as a whole.

It is only when the present small farm holdings are augmented into larger efficent holdings, a sort of economic darwanism 'survival of the fittest', that Japan will realisticly strife to the goal of less dependence on imported food.

dogdog, so you're saying Japan should not strive for higher food self-sufficiency? I'm just trying to figure out the logic behind your diatribe.

Primarily Japan should live, like the USA and Europe should, within economic realities that prosper their citizens as a whole and not just a small interest group. The economics of Japanese food self sufficiency are unattainable. Tariffs on imports ,of 700%, and subsidies of trillions of yen of taxpayers' money (taxpayers who live in shoe boxes in overcrowded concrete islands) have to be in place to maintain the present level of Japanese food self sufficiency.

On a second level, Japan has a moral responsibility, just like the USA and Europe does, to defeat world poverty by allowing a fair and free global competitive market to exist for all products and not just those that they dominate the world in.

In Japan how can we counter the above arguments? Not by telling the consummer that our 10kgs of rice produced with 100 kgs of pesticide is safer, wouldn't take long for the truth to come out if we did. Not that our domestically grown onions are fresher than those chinese ones, because any shopper with a grain of sense soon realizes the fallacy of that one.

I know let's give it the old nihonjinron food culture line spiced up with a bit of xenophobe food auturky. That should allow the greatest tax rip off in Japanese history to continue for another 50 years.

“I think we’re entering a phase when the Japanese are trying to preserve their own types of food,” Miura said. “You can’t separate the issues of food self-sufficiency and food culture.”

The majority of Japanese, who live in the cities, couldn't give a damn where their food comes from.

Homegrown or not, most Japanese foodstuffs bought in supermarkets are more well traveled that the average Japanese, not fresh or tasty.

Get rid of the middleman system and the homegrown foods might be fresher and cheaper. Get rid of the JA 'if it grows, drown it in pesticide' monopoly and the homegrown product might be safer. Then Japanese people might buy homegrown foodstuffs rather than the imported products.

Will this happen? Of course not, so let's get back to the mystique of Japanese foodstuffs and the Japanese themselves......

A total joke, deserving of a 10 year old

'You can’t separate the issues of food self-sufficiency and food culture.”

This sort of tactic could really resolve the unemployment crises of temp workers in Japan. I expect to see it in Aso's next budget and the government to set aside 3 trillion yen of taxpayers' money to ensure its effective implementaion.

Of course those saying this was a good pay day for those employed, get real! This is Japan and we all know Japanese work practices. They got paid for 1 hour's attendence but were expected to attend for 5 hours. They being the work slaves they are, dutifully put in their 4 hours unpaid OT but were pleased with their end of work bonus of a free quarter pounder.

Y200 an hour, even Shui would turn his nose up to that wage.

but did he manage to be one more to fall through the cracks?

He sure did and that's saying something about how simple he must be. In this country you can be very cognitively challenged from birth and succesfully pursue a career in politics, the law or the police force.

    Come on posters!!!!

This was an ex-AV star, hardly a model I would like my daughter looking up to.

Her death is rather poetic about modern Japan, 38 year old woman who was unmarried and childless. Her tragedy is confirmation of the loser dog syndrome and that the kanji for a widow is applicable to other female social positions in modern Japan.

Her death will become the bogeyman saga for modern Japanese womenhood. Remember Ai chan? She was an independent, succesfull and wealthy woman, but look how she died. So next time Hiroshi kun, the social deficent otaku salary drone asks you marry him with his sister's knickers wrapped around his head, gladly accept his offer and the future of 25 years in a one room company dorm because you wouldn't want to end up like Ai chan, would you?

    Possible AIDS victim.Sad though! http://sankei.jp.msn.com/topics/entertainments/2321/ent2321-t.htm

Your Japanese sucks bigtime, if you think that article says anything about her having AIDS. It just reports a neighbor seeing her in the lift and behaving irrationally - barefoot and holding her boots - about a week ago.

According to the news she had some health problems, with her kidneys. Could be a similar case to the Zard woman who had cancer and decided to top herself.

This has a lot to do with the Chinese mafia now being the big fish in Kabukicho. The Yaks have moved out elsewhere and in true Japanese tradition, these new places will be allowed to carry out their business unhindered by the keystones.

I wonder when they're gonna get round to evicting the Yamaguchi gumi from their HQ?

But the Japanese whilst enjoying cheap imports won't sell any of their now over priced good will they?

Don't worry about that, Japan will get around that one with unfair trade practices such as invisible government subsidies for exports or subsidising the price of an export good by pricing the same good at twice the price for the domestic market.

Japan Inc is far from finished.

I would rather bet on the Kiwi. The Kiwi can rebound much faster.

Agreed, as long as NZ can get its deficit in order, which it hasn't since the mid-90s

The BOJ is shooting on blanks, every national banks nightmare. Its only other valid option is to lower interest rates from 0.1% to 0.05%. During the good years, 2004-08, the BOJ should have raised interest rates to a steady 1.5% or 2.5%. Then they would have had something to play with now.

However the belief that Japan was gonna live on a cheap yen and the resulting exports, which were subsidizing a failed domestic economy, forever was too tempting for them to behave responsibly.

Last port of call will be BOJ intervention in the FX and watch the flack that will come with that (Europe) 'If the Japanese can devalue their currency, why can't we?' (China) 'Yeah we'll have some of that.'

Price fixing in Japan, well I never!!!

They must have done such a crass job of it that the Japanese govenment had no choice but to state the obvious. Otherwise such practices are totally ignored in Japan in the cause of bettering 'Japan Inc'.

she must be one of the most overrated japanese actresses

That must be one of the most difficult statements to prove. I have yet to see any female 'talento' on my TV who I could truly be rated as an actress.

As for the youth himself... yes, it's sad that someone so young has lost his life to violence. But then again, you live by the sword you die by the sword.

Oh pleeeeze, lazy opinions, the kettle calling ......

He was a member of a biker gang, who at worst probably took the silencers out of his bike and disturbed the local neighborhood and traffic, he wasn't a 'soldier' in the Gambino family.

However disturbing your TV viewing is a capital offence, is that what you are saying?

    The Japanese people are much more fiscally responsible;

The Japanese are parasites on the global economy. They want us to buy their products, but place way too many hudles in my way for me to buy cheaper US products directly - media products.

    better educated

Just did a Asian geography test with my uni students and half of them mistook Mongolia for China and a third of them mistook Vietnam for Korea. This was at a university considered 'good' and with third year students studying international relations. last month quite a few couldn't get their head around the fact that Barack was elected US president when, 'black people don't have the vote in the US'.

New Orleans was a complete mess while Kobe was rebuilt with a well-organised plan,

Oh please.... have you ever been to Kobe? The Yamaguchi Gumi put the government to shame in terms of initial action. Just because you don't read about Kobe in the newspapers, doesn't mean it's OK.
