The concept of personal responsibility is almost nonexistent in the thinking process of most people today. There are three process that usually come into play, 1. Who can I blame when I screw up? 2. Who can I get money from for my screw up 3. Who is going to do the legwork for me?

Throughout time immortal there have been peoples and nations who have put up walls and only wanted to be left alone and to live in peace. Inevitably there came an invading army to break down those walls and plunder all within just because they could. It is a noble concept to be able to get along as nations and a goal to strive for, but in the meantime you need to keep a vigilant watch on the wall and good men at your side, someone is planning to come to take your gold and your life, you can count on it as sure as winter is coming.

It there were not also the issue of the disputed islands it would make the back page of some irrelevant blog. China and Korea are more than willing to use it as a platform for throwing rocks and Japan is using it to thum her nose at them. Maybe Japan is starting to grow a pair.....

Well folks, here we have an English teacher cat fight. You all can take a deep breath, the beautiful and poetic English language along with the "correct" grammar is going in the toilet thanks to facebook-twitter-bloggs-email-texts etc. In one breath you lament the mess the Americans are making of the Queen's English and in the next breath you beat up on the whiner for not being able to understand "European English". Anyone who learns the "Queens English" in this day and age will find it akin to Latin compared to what is spoken and written in the day to day banter. And yes Ms/Mr English teacher it holds true for the corporate world as well.

Kinda like an American U, where the student sits in class and listens to tunes on his/her Iphone for four years and then sues the U in court for a degree claiming he/she was discriminated against because the Prof did not talk loud enough.

I can't figure how this "religion" gets a free pass. It it were blowing people up, the world would be howling for the religious leaders to condemn the violence and control their flock. If a Islamic does it, the silence is deafening.

No background check required. They went to Bombs-r-us for their shopping needs, not the local Wal-Mart. There is a basis for the quip, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns" and these guys were outlaws. Anyway. guns are not the weapon of choice for a terrorist, just not enough bang for the buck.

@Yubaru
I work for a US government contractor. I do have base privileges, but the amount of money I spend on base does not come anywhere close to offsetting the discrepancies in the yen and dollar rates. Utilities, automobile costs, schools etc are all in yen and makeup the bulk of my cost of living. I am still looking for those cost of living adjustments you referred to, they just do not happen. I do live in Japan by choice and try to temper my complaints, recognizing that this is Japan and the Japanese people have the right to run their country any dam way they please. IMHO anyone that can't abide by that simple philosophy should pack their bag and go home.

Nope! perfectly normal. I drive around the same scenario everyday on my way home. If the child is big enough to walk it is big enough to share the street will a 1500 kilo automobile and a half dozen other kids who are playing whatever the game of the day is. Mom is either on the Kati, watching a quiz/talk show or heating up dinner in the microwave. No worries all is good!

There is probably some level of jealousy of Japan as well. Japan pulled herself from the ashes of WWII and became a world power many years ago while China and Korea are just now getting their act together. Japan has a fairly high approval status on the world stage, while China and Korea have struggled with poverty, human rights issues and internal political issues.
