I think too much attention is paid to how the kids do at school and not enough to their physical and mental happiness. The result is these hikikomori kids.
But I am happy to see in the trains and on the town many Japanese young fathers tending their kids - this is a new generation of different fatherhood.
Biking with kids front and back without helmet seems to be a common thing here - abunai really.

Beerplease: I agree. The reason is not the yutori education at elementary, mmiddle or high schools, but the university education. A lot of students just sleep their way through the uni.

Japan does not respect architecture at all. The nostalgic post-war buildings of Omotesando, with listeria on the walls, and a horribly ugly mall was built instead. I am surprised to read above that it is actually designed by somebody. In the U.S. they at least have the decency to put these malls outside of the city center.

Cleo: If somebody applies to a company as a bilingual (Japanese and English), clearly they should expect their bilingual skills to be used for the benefit of the company at some point.
In the same company, this foreign worker said the Japanese co-workers were often amazed that she initiated to do some tasks herself, when nobody had even asked her to do them.

All the American companies have rude staff. Aeroflot also. Best are the Asian, including JAL and ANA, and some European airlines, like Finnair - they all have at least decent service.

KnowBetter: I don't understand. First you claim that people die at home, but then they die anywhere else. How can somebody die twice?

I think there is some truth here. A European employee of one European big company, who has an office in Tokyo and a lot of Japanese workers there, said that once she asked a Japanese office worker to translate a press release she had written in English, into Japanese, and the Japanese worker declined, stating that it was not written in her work contract. Many Japanese workers just do robotically what they are trained to do, but ask them to do something unexpected and they go totally 0 in their heads.

WHO succumbed to the demands of Japan and some other countries, who did not want the phase raised to 6. We were in a pandemic already 2-3 weeks ago.
Statistician: that will not happen, thanks to some bright politicians, such as Masuzoe.
bamboohat: Maybe you should check first what their reasoning is.

dano: The guy turned on the laptop probably because for the previous 6 hours he had been trying to sleep, but could not bec. of the screaming brat. So now he was fully awake and had to pass the time to arrival somehow.
I also wonder why they can't place all the families with kids in the same compartment.

My guesses: 30 to 40-yr old jazz lover, shops food at Kinokuniya, likes to prepare food himself, no kids, some juicy woman carrying brand name clothes enters his life, they have steamy sex, and some fantastic non-realistic stuff happens.

I watch NHK, where they have pretty decent shows. That one with keitai jokes is a fun one.
And let's not forget: this country produces anime, which is eagerly consumed around the globe.

ptolemy: I base my estimate on the fact that for several years Japanese women's mag reader poll Sexiest Man in Japan winner was Kimutaku, and for just hearing some of their opinions. An don the fact that any Tv drama starring Kimutake takes an automatic 30+% Nielsen rating, higher than anything else on TV.
I don't own any SMAP posters. I am not even a huge fan of them, but still, I would not mind seeing Kimutaku naked. If saying like this half-humorously makes me and millions of Japanese women stalkers, then be it.

Remember: those Japanese who are now 80-100 years old, lived their youth during the war, with the men fighting in the army, and in many cases their nutrition being very sparse. During the late days of WWII people hardly had enough rice for ex, in Tokyo.
