What we saw tonight is Senator Obama looking every bit Presidential, calm, intelligent and reassuring. It has indeed taken a "brother" to actually bring cool to politics.
Meanwhile, the Republicans are busy offering "Joe the plummer" ambassadorships to France or possibly England if they win, fat chance. I suspect that "Joe the Plummer" will become the corner stone of the Republican campaign over the next three weeks.

Obama is not there yet. To elect a black man regardless of competence is an unpalatable pill for some white Americans to swallow. They will say in the polling that they will vote for Obama but that may not be the case on the day of the election.
Race continues to remain a deep concern that characterizes the pathology of white America. A recent polling is suggesting that over 40% of whites believe that there is no racism in America, while 85% of minorities hold a contrary view.
It is against that background that the election will be held. And this makes it all the more difficult to accurately assess the outcome.
Perhaps the Democrats will find more confidence in the numbers of new potential voters they have been able to register, but in the final analysis whites as a group are very much in the majority.

Come on Sarge, you are a push over. I could probably sell you the Sydney Harbour Bridge in one sitting, and you would be asking for me to make you a deal on the Opera House.

Nippon5: These statements are simply observations, and due to a lack of space cursory analysis. Whites are those who along with the broader society regard themselves as white.
Nippon5 With all due respect feel free to declare yourself and family to be whatever you like.

Even though they may seem to try some whites especially those McCain advocates just don't get it. They believe that freedom can be doled out in degrees, and if you get half in the process somehow that is acceptable. That half representing a mitigating factor around which minorities should construct a shrine and be eternally greatful.
That the war service of McCain with its attendant imprisonment and torture stands larger than the quest and realization of social justice. Well it does not regardless of whatever spin you may put on it. Social justice is the moral engine on which real democracy turns, without it we have nothing.
McCain did have a choice when he decided to wear a uniform. His civil rights and freedom were never under threat at home or even abroad, a man who in later years had remained belligerent to the notion of reserving a day to nationally honor the Rev. Martin Luther King. That in itself speaks volume about this man's thinking.
McCain is only a hero to those who seek to deny the manifold injustices that were a reality of the 60s for millions of Americans who just wanted to be treated equality.
If McCain's war service is going to be defined as a measure of character then it must be given the same billing with those who risk lives and arbitrary imprisonment for the cause of freedom at home. How in all fairness can that prolong experience of suffering not be a testament to the battle for true democratic principles.

Nippon5 You forgot a few other problems the minorities had that can be compared with McCain's imprisonment. You conveniently left out the wide spread all important lynchings, the thousand of race base murders and false imprisonment that occurred.
I suggest that you are the one who is undermining the importance of minority suffering. You have clearly missed the point. You think a little bit of freedom is OK as long as it is not happening to you.
Minorities were prepared to die in Vietnam even though they did not have an equal stake in America. The system McCain fought and was imprisoned for was hypocritical in is application and patently bias in respect to those that it rewarded.
For those reasons McCain's service must be seen as one that purely representing the interest of a particular class and race, It did represent the interest of all Americans.

In the 1960s McCain was in a prison camp in Vietnam fighting for so called "freedom", a retort which his campaign advisers like to throw out there.
However, they seem to forget two things: The first is that thousands of minorities were at the same time fighting and dying in Vietnam; And secondly, that millions of minorities back home in the so called land of the free were fighting just to have a seat on the bus let alone vote.
John McCain service in Vietnam is no more important than that black enlisted man who fought with distinction and still did not enjoyed the kind freedom McCain and his lot enjoyed at home.
McCain already had a stake in America when he was captured, yes a substantial one that well exceeded many of those who died in their thousands in that wasteful cause that was Vietnam.
McCain can take his war service and insert it not too carefully up his rear end.

I love Tango, started learning a year ago and now I can pretty much hold my own out there. There is nothing quite as empowering for a man than to be able to Tango. It is the last stronghold of male assertiveness in that the man is expected to lead under all circumstances. The woman in essence remains at your call responding to your dance instructions wherever they may lead. It is not an easy dance and is requiring a lot of desire to learn.
I suppose the pay off for me is to be able to go to a dance especially in Tokyo, where you will naturally find a lot more woman that men in attendance. The ratio is going to be 10 to 1 where you will virtually have woman taking a ticket and getting in line just to dance with you. The women who come to Tango are invariable passionate and are often good dancers. If you can hold your own in a basic way and lead with some confidence then you are going to have a great night.

I just can't help but to think that there is something "Trailer Park" about that Sarah Palin and her family. This entire troopergate story with its threats and taser gun use seem the stuff of white trash.
Moderator: Please do not use expressions like "white trash." They lower the level of discussion and reflect badly on yourself.

taniwha Your claims are outrageous! Obama a potential dictator! on what basis do you make that claim. Let me guess, he is too charismatic has world wide support and happens to be smart. Or is it something else? The current administration has been more dictatorial than perhaps any other in the nations history.

tclh: The Republican party is one that seeks its relevance through fear tactics. It is the same approach that they have taken to foreign policy and the war on terror. The notion that they can remain incommunicado with their perceived enemies with the hope that silent belligerence will win them over is facile. The reality is that if you seek to conjure, invent or orchestrate situation of crisis that is essentially what you will harvest. The process of change has started and will gain momentum with the election of Senator Obama

The hatred coming from the McCain/Palin supporters reflects the kind of America we can envisage if they are elected. A backward thinking intolerant leadership that long for the glory days when a substantial amount of Americans were effectively disenfranchised. They long for the return of separate bathrooms, back of the bus rules and substandard education based on race.
These are the same people that seek to label Obama a Muslin, which we all know is the modern day euphemism for the "N" word.
It really piss them off to know that minorities have survived the indignities of their past experiences and is now in a position to achieve the highest office in the land. That minorities have moved beyond the bipolar leadership of the Jessie Jackson and others of the past, to a better educated, younger, calmer and less affected leadership that is capable of delivering a more inclusive and better respected America.
For those angry white people out there, take a sedative! The ascendancy of Obama is the inevitable march of history, essential part of that manifest destiny you like to talk about.

Who cares about Ayers and weather Obama at one point had lunch with this man or in the course of some community initiative did some work in which this person was also involved. It is just not going to work this time. Guilt by association and that he is a Muslim is just euphemism for the "N" word. It is a traditional Republican tactic where they play on the fears and ignorance of the American people. That simply will not wash this time
