Australia has been asked to take some of these prisoners and I am sure they will not take any unless they are Australian citizens.
The problem all along has been the arrogance of US foreign policy. All these countries that they are asking to accept these prisoners were essentially against that kind of interment in the first place. The Bristish and the Australians were against the whole Gitmo interment, and were consistently asking the US to either have trials or release these men.

The problems in Gaza is similar to any situation where you have an oppressed group of people seeking to discard the yoke of oppression. It should be officially labeled an uprising, a desperate attempt to drive out the occupiers. This notion that Hamas started the war is ridiculous. A state of war has always existed between the two combatants, and only when Israel ends the occupation can any degree of normalcy return to Gaza.

Molenir: The question should be, how long should the Palestinian people endure the disgrace and humiliation that is the occupation?
The Rockets are symptomatic of Palestinian suffering, the inevitable outcome of concentration camp style conditions, in which all control of their society, land, movement have been appropriated. If this is not apartheid then please tell me what this is?
And just imagine what would be happening today if the UN had granted Israel a homeland in the heart of Africa, a place that they had considered but changed at the last moment.

This is naked aggression by the Israelis. It is not about rocket fire but more about destroying Hamas and harassing the civilian population. Israel has targeted civilian infrastructure, for example schools, dept education, government buildings, hospitals etc.
What is laughable is that the Israeli army is telling the civilian population to stay out of the way. Where are they going to go to get out of the way. They are encircled, have no heating or electricity and is in pitch dark.
Israel will ultimately fail and Hamas will emerge stronger with broader support. Hamas is a grass roots movement that is essentially part and parcel of Palestinian life in Gaza. You cannot apply a military solution to address a grass root political movement.

SuperLib: The Palestinians live under a life of occupation. Their airspace, sea lanes and movement over land is heavily controlled. That to me is occupation and control. That has essentially been the condition before the rocket firing and will continue well after.

Israel is an occupying army, which is in control all movements in terms of land sea and air, and even control the movements of those who can leave the conflict area.
This has been the state of Gaza for as long as I can remember. Under these circumstances a state of war have always existed between Israel and the people of the Gaza strip.
There is 1.3 million people squeezed into a tiny area by the Israeli army. A state of siege have always existed especially when the material resources of a community is largely controlled by others.
This notion about a cease fire has been broken is ridiculous. The war did not start with the ending of the cease fire. The war against the Palestinian people has always been ongoing and the occupation is a testament to that fact.
The Palestinians have a right to defend themselves from an occupying army bent on undermining there ability to to achieve self determination. Palestinian rocket firing against the Israeli army is a stand against oppression, it is essentially a bold resistance to an occupying army.

The regime in Tel Aviv can not have it both ways. They want to continue the blockade and expect to have peace at the same time. The Gaza strip is reminiscent of the systematic isolation of the Warsar ghetto during the 2 World War.

sailwind: We have always known that sovereignty especially in this case is purely a matter of perspective. The issue is never relevant during the appropriation and alienation process where Palestinian victims were being made every day. The right to confront tyranny is every man's duty even if your enemy is stronger and more connected.
Israel is simply a psychopathic bully who overreacts every time the victims gets a shot in. It pisses Israel off to know that after over 50 years of marginalization of the Palestinian people their will to fight back is still alive and growing in potency. An invasion of the West Bank will only serve to delay the fighting capacity of the victims and six or seven months later we will be back to the same impasse.

If the Palestinian stopped firing rockets into Israel it will make no difference to their material life. The Israeli occupation will continue and the Palestinian control over their own destiny will become even less assured. At least in this situation they can chose a path even if its a violent one.

It is not in Israel's interest to promote peace in the middle east let alone with the Palestinians. Ahmadinejad for all his lunatic ramblings my be the only leader that truly recognizes this situation. His charge that Israel never negotiate in good faith may not be so far fetch.
Overall peace to the region would require Israel to live by a whole new set of rules. They most certainly would lose their enormous funding from the US and the ability to continue to make claims on Palestinian land significantly curtailed.
The political economy of peace on the Palestinian/Israeli boarder may be driven by other realities far more insidious than meets the eye.

The Russians making statements about their capability is something I view with skepticism. The last time the Russians were confronted with a crisis most of the hostages ended up dead and even that bundle was deemed a success. They just cant be trusted.

I am sick and tired of these sickos seeking to avenge the so called murder of Iraqis. These murders they have blindly attributed to American and British actions in Iraq, yet they ignore the large amount of casualties being leveled on the Iraqi people by El Qaeda. It really defies logic how young Muslims are so easily sucked in by this fundamentally flawed interpretation of Islam. But what is even more frightening is the lack of outcry from the majority of so called moderate Muslims who remain relatively silent in the face of such madness.

These Iraqis are just laughable. Try doing that at a news conference given by Saddam during his leadership. That reporter would never have been heard from again. And the reporter talking about killing Iraqis, I suggest that he put that question to the terrorist leadership in Iraq. This silly reporter should do jail time as his actions constitute assault.
