She has been known as "Depa-chika no Sato Baa" (Granny Sato of the food basement department store). She is a wealthy woman, an owner of an apartment and everything, living with her family. Her neighbors are talking about her like this. "I haven't seen Sato for a while." "She must be in jail AGAIN."

The question is, did she gain her wealth (and apartment) via other people's wallets? She's a one-woman crime-spree.

Based on their past tendencies, Pyongyang would probably arrest enthusiastic supporters for "insurrection" or "sedition".

(Please turn off sarcasm meters at this time to prevent damage due to sarcasm overload.)

After all, how could people who don't live in the utopia that is North Korea POSSIBLY be enthusiastic about anything?! To imply otherwise is to incite rebellion in that happy little piece of Shangra-La.

(You may now restore your sarcasm meters to normal operation.)

These are probably the estimates that CDC put down in 1999. I guess they improved somewhat since then

Hmm. That's not a CDC article. That's a reprint of an article that appeared in the October 1999 issue of "Emerging Infectious Diseases Journal". While it's true that the authors were scientists at CDC, you probably missed the disclaimer at the bottom of the page that stated:

The opinions expressed by authors contributing to this journal do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Public Health Service, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the authors' affiliated institutions. Use of trade names is for identification only and does not imply endorsement by any of the groups named above.

In short, this was a paper published by the authors, not the CDC.

Japan's equivilent to the CDC has an interesting article on the subject, also dated in 2008 so it can be compared with the CDC's current webpage:

    http://idsc.nih.go.jp/iasr/29/342/tpc342.html

The first sentence of it's conclusion refutes the statement that, "in Japan, there were 0 (ZERO) cases of food poisoning deaths.":

Conclusion: The incidence of bacterial food poisoning has been on the decrease, whereas diffuse outbreaks are occurring and so are deaths almost every year, which requires special attention.

Nigelboy must have information the rest of us don't, or he's quoting total deaths due to food poisoning since records started being kept. According to the very same CDC that Nigel claims to be quoting, their food safety page lists the data for 2008 (the latest year for which data is available) and that data shows TWENTY-TWO deaths due to food poisoning. 22 <> 5,000.

Care to explain the discrepancy, Nigelboy?

    Here's my source, where's yours?

So, you are right, Japan can walk. But you are dead wrong if you think Japan is going to bully Australia or the U.S. into accepting Japan's terms.

If I had actually stated - or even implied - that Japan was going to bully anybody regarding this issue then you would have a point. But I didn't, so you don't.

No you won't, Noda. Or did you miss the recent comments in the U.S. that Japan won't be setting the rules of TPP?

Actually, yes he will. They've only agreed to join the talks, not sign the document. If Japan doesn't get what it wants out of the talks, then they can still walk without signing. It wouldn't seem to be a wise move from my point of view, but then I'm not privy to the details of what's been hammered-out so far or what Japan wants added/removed to the agreement.

So we went without air conditioning in summer so the fools can do this.

Actually, this has nothing to do with that. Surplus generated energy doesn't get stored for use at a later date. If the capacity that's on the grid at any given moment is not completely used, the unused portion is wasted. As long as this light display is not causing a brown-out elsewhere then there's no impact on the energy shortage.

The US is doing what they had to by law. Previous Presidents signed laws that basically said "If Palestine is admitted to the U.N., then the U.S. will no longer fund the U.N." A follow-on law stated a similar situation would happen if an entity that was not a recognized country was allowed to join the U.N. Both were targeted at the Palestines and were probably instigated by Israel. This showdown was bound to happen eventually as long as those laws existed. The U.N. decided they couldn't wait any longer and now are trying to make up the loss of the U.S. funds. I wonder if the U.N. will move their headquarters out of New York now?

I WOULD be interested in the current draw of that display. It's got to be significant even WITH LEDs. Can you imagine what it would be like if those were incandescents? The heat generated would keep the area snow and ice free all winter long.

USA is a huge rich country full of raw materials, an imperialist power

??? This was certainly true back in the late 1800's. Not so true now. We're so "rich" that our debt continues to increase at an alarming rate and the weenies up the road in Washington would rather pass useless resolutions than actually do something constructive about the problems we're facing.

Are we doing so badly that we're back to bashing Japan, which employs thousands and thousands of people in the US?

Yes, Japanese car companies employ thousands of Americans to make their cars here in America - just not in Michigan which is the reason this Senator from Michigan is squawking so loudly. The issue isn't Japanese cars, the issue is American cars and why Michigan isn't inundating foreign shores with them. As others have posted here, the American brands suffer an image problem over and above any tariff concerns. The senator would do just as well to ask Detroit, "Y U No Make Good Cars?!"

Personally, I own a GM car, a 2011 Buick Regal and am quite happy with it. Of course, it's not really American because it was designed and built in Russelsheim, Germany. Thus, even though I'm supporting the American auto industry, I'm not COMPLETELY supporting them.

Meh. The middle of the article says it all:

Levin represents Michigan, the heart of the U.S. automobile industry.

Just another politician trying to win "brownie points" from his constituents. U.S. cars drive on the "wrong" side of the road as far as the Japanese are concerned, so nothing would get shipped to Japan without a major re-work of the driving arrangements. In most cases the redesign wouldn't be worth the effort. The "distinguished Senator from the great state of Michigan" probably already knows this, but spouting off like this to the press makes him look good to the voters back home.

The kids around here use "gay" to mean anything they don't like. When I ask them why they hate gays so much, they stare at me like I've grown a second head, then try to explain it away just like jforce did. "It's not about hating homos, it's about hating something being GAY!" Usually that's about the time I stop trying to hit them over the head with the "obvious" hammer and give up. They'll never get it even if you spoon-feed it to them syllable by syllable.

The construction on Guam is at a standstill because (wait for it...) unless the Okinawans change their stance, there's no reason to CONTINUE construction! The construction was based on an agreement that the Okinawans are blocking. No agreement, no movement of troops, no need to build infrastructure to support the troops that aren't moving. Get it? And for every week that the construction is halted, the costs to finish the construction go up. So whose fault is it that they are asking for more money? (Hint: The first initial is "O" and the second initial is "kinawans".)

And the vessel should have been confiscated.

??? If you're driving your car and enter a "No Trespassing" area, you would expect to have your car confiscated rather than be ticketed and escorted out of the area?
